They're playing Orlando! What are they complaining about? I think lots of Shakespeare has been performed swapping some male and female characters because this is art - have they never heard of this? Or they could go and do a panto and be the prince. In the meantime, they will just get cast as a detective/superhero/love interest/cleaner/ teacher/doctor etc. but a female one, because they are female!

Exactly, I saw Tamsin Greig playing Malvolio at the National and it worked, because TG is a better actor than poor Emma can ever hope to be.

See this is the thing Emma, if producers and directors think you are good enough they will offer you the roles, but if they don’t, they won’t.

Being gender critical, I wish it was possible to have more roles where the sex of the person genuinely didn't matter to the storyline or how the various characters interact - but at this point in our culture, it would be unlikely to ring true to life.

There are probably some roles which are or could be like this, aren't they the ones this person should go for rathe than wanting 'male' roles?

Emma Corrin has a particular type of delicate female attractiveness which is a huge factor in the excellent roles Corrin has been lucky enough to get cast in. There are plenty of excellent women actors out there whose careers never get off the ground because their face doesn’t fit.
I think this is why I find Corrin’s denial of physical sex so annoying. I have met quite a few non binary teenagers who go to great lengths to avoid a feminine presentation because they are basically just doing their best to get the world to engage with them as a person rather than a girl. It’s not the way we went about it but it seems fair enough. I can’t see that in Corrin’s approach at all, I can’t really figure out what the goal is there other than attention.

When will people like Emma realise that it doesn't matter how you feel? If it looks/walks/quacks like a duck - it's a duck. Why on earth would anyone consider her for a male role?

Stop asking other people to live in the fantasy world you inhabit.

If Emma think not being offered male roles as a binary person is tough I dread to think how hard life must be for actors who identify as furry animals. “ They keep offering me roles which are like basically lizards or fish, it’s so haaaaaard.”

There is something disturbing around the extent to which identity politics now saturates the world we live in. Its everywhere and I now actively refuse to watch / read / do business with anyone trying to shove a political agenda down my throat.

Helleofabore · 16/02/2023 11:51

This actor wants more content about non-binary people….Unless it is an integral part of the storyline and adds something or accurately represents the the story, why? Does the public viewing audience want it or is it being driven by groups?

Tweaking storylines to suit a political agenda is now happening in so many shows, I suspect the viewing audiences will just drop away.

SquirrelFan · 16/02/2023 11:27

@DameMaud exactly

Beamur · 16/02/2023 10:56

Maybe they should have a chat with Tilda Swinton?
There is a bit of dissonance around actors being able to 'act' and 'pretend' (borrowing from Sir Ian McKellen there) which seems to me to be the essence of what it's about and the argument about lived experience being required, which would probably render up very few (and not necessarily very interesting) roles for an actor.

IcakethereforeIam · 16/02/2023 10:50

To be coherent shouldn't they be complaining about being offered female roles? They's NB fgs! Can't they see they pronouns?

DameMaud · 16/02/2023 10:49

Isn't this (actors should be able to play parts outside of their lived experience) in direct contradiction to all the furore in recent years about actors needing to have lived experience to play roles eg.trans parts needing to be played by trans actors?
(Hurried type- sorry)

OrangeToothbrush · 16/02/2023 10:48

They added: 'The beauty of acting is taking on a character that doesn't necessarily have to be completely in tune with your own experience, it's sort of a way to explore."
Interesting the they/ thems of the world can express this rather obvious opinion without donning a hair shirt isn't it!

Abccde · 16/02/2023 10:46

All I can see os a female with short hair.

There is nothing unique there. There is nothing that I can see to suggest that some people might consider this person male.

And they aren't even claiming to be male? So why would they get male roles?

Make it make sense.

Pixiedust1234 · 16/02/2023 10:43

The thing I've noticed about people being non binary...its all about how others view them. Its not about feelz but biology.

Based on this surely they should be joining the LGB group and getting away from the T 🤔😮
