Fisher-them and the policing of gendered language

Apparently Sam Smith would love to be a "fisherm...fisherthem", as stated on The One Show.

This policing of language is becoming utterly insane. Yet even live on TV no one seems to bat an eyelid. They seem more confused by the concept of Sam fishing than the term "fisherthem". Gender is the only are where narcissism isn't just accepted, it's actively celebrated.

What's next? A them-hole cover? Themager? Themdatory?

I'm sure we can all learn to theyage the new words. It's only a theyner of speaking, after all, what theyy people fail to understand is that language changes, it's impertheyent, yes, but it's also not something one can theyipulate.

FFS we went through all this bollocks in the 70s. Do we REALLY have to do it again?
Manhole covers -> drain hole covers
Chairman -> Chairperson / chair
Fireman -> firefighter
Policeman -> police officer

it wasn't fucking difficult then and it isn't fucking difficult now. Why the heck are people trying to reinvent the sodding wheel?

I wanted a special word for the body I have but I was told that was exclusionary and I must be "a person who menstruates" etc.

The word "angler" is definitely the right one but if Sam Smith doesn't want that Sam can definitely be "a person who fishes".

But I also saw a news headline that said Sam was being "misgendered" when the presenter didn't use the word "fisherthem" 🙄🙄🙄

Yes. And access hole cover, staffing (not manning) and so on. I remember when 'chairman' was standard and women demanded chairperson and the boys thought it too much of a mouthful. Now, 'chair' is common.

He is trolling everyone now though for sure. This isn't "them" used in a logical place even. The usual word is not usually fisherhe, if it were you could maybe see some sort of continuity of argument in using fisherthem, but it is fisherman, so utterly nonsensical.
