Because having chosen to exclude themselves from the definition of "women" (on the grounds that they, and only they, believe that it is a gender identity they don't share, rather than a word for people of the biological sex they do share), it is now apparently vitally important for the rest of us to be redefined and renamed in order for them to be included in the same group they chose to exclude themselves from.

Nope, me neither.

Perfect.

And it's bollocks anyway. If suddenly women were truly, universally, called menstruators, they'd want to opt out of that as well.

Transwomen too. First they wanted woman, so women started to differentiate themselves by calling themselves female, then they took female, and now they want ciswoman. And according to India Willoughby, biological woman too!

The name is really immaterial, it's the very concept they want.

Those two sentences contradict each other.

The person in question is a woman. Denying it is the opposite of facing biology.

If you don't think the word woman means 'of or denoting the sex who bears eggs', what do you think it means?

Seriously. What does it actually mean to you?

Its meaning does seem to have shifted. I just googled. The Cambridge Dictionary includes a definition like yours, but also an "additional descriptor":

an adult who lives and identifies as female though they may have been said to have a different sex at birth

They've got a symmetrical definition of man, so they do include identity as an alternative to biology.

I knew a gorgeous cat called Oscar. NAOAWs

JibbaJam · 08/02/2023 12:32

I've emailed and told them to remove them from their mailing lists due to this crap. Let's all do the same and try and get them to listen.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/02/2023 12:26

I've never met anyone called Oscar who wasn't a wanker.

I can think of one who seems decent enough - but then he does live in a dustbin!

They are facing biology. They just don't want to be called women.

But why is it always the vast majority who are expected to change to accommodate their beliefs and feelings? Why can't they refer to themselves as 'period-havers' or 'menstruators' and leave the women and girls whom everybody knows full-well and uncontroversially are women and girls alone to be referred to as such.

If they want to be considered effectively men - and absolutely not women - why are they fighting so hard to insist that 'not all people who menstruate are women' and never that 'not all men [the category they believe they belong to] do not menstruate' ?

Because having chosen to exclude themselves from the definition of "women" (on the grounds that they, and only they, believe that it is a gender identity they don't share, rather than a word for people of the biological sex they do share), it is now apparently vitally important for the rest of us to be redefined and renamed in order for them to be included in the same group they chose to exclude themselves from.

If men think they are having periods out of their penises they need medical and psychiatric help.
If men have had their penises removed and they are having blood coming out of the wound that is left they need medical help.
If a woman who transitions to call themselves Oscar is having a period it's just a period. Not a magical gender period.
Just an ordinary boring period.

Calmdown14 · 08/02/2023 08:36

Where are all these women whose periods are in some way connected to their identity.

I've never come across anyone who considers their period in this way.

In fact Oscar, for women who suffer infertility they are a delightful sign of failure every month that they'd rather not have to endure.

They are painful and debilitating for many.

But hey, let's not consider the feelings of these ordinary boring women that just have to lump it

FeinCuroxiVooz · 08/02/2023 08:30

I agree that periods are a genderless function. They only happen for bodies that are biologically female, regardless of gender feelings, it is not possible to identify out of having them (though it is possible to stop them with medication or surgery if that's necessary). if a male-bodied child starts bleeding at the crotch that's a serious problem. if a female bodied child doesn't have a period by the age of 14 or so then medical examination in case there's an issue that needs investigation is sensible, and that's equally true if the female child in question likes to be called a gender-neutral or male name (possibly even more so as it could indicate that they have accessed an unregulated supply of inappropriate medication).

Period products manufacturers who make everything pink and flowery and imbued with a sickly-sweet perfume to be more prissy and girly-girly annoy me. And if talking about periods in a gender neutral way helps the often-autistic and vulnerable people who are trying to navigate their way to adulthood without all the crap that's labelled "how to be a woman" through ongoing sexism embedded in our culture, then that's not doing any harm.

it does need to be clear that when any kind of facilities or provision is separated into male and female due to anything connected to the fact that some kinds of bodies produce large gametes and have regular periods needing additional hygiene facilities, and have the capacity to get pregnant, and other kinds of bodies produce small gametes and can get the other kind of person to be pregnant, then the division of such facilities or provision must always be on the basis of sex, not gender. examples include lavatories, hospital wards, prisons and sleeping arrangements on school trips, scout&guide camps etc.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/02/2023 08:23

99.99% of their customers are women and girls.

That low? Presumably, the other 0.01% are buying them on behalf of women and girls.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/02/2023 08:19

What is a gendered function? There is no such thing.
A gendered function is something that happens when man-made rules and constraints are applied to one or other sex.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 08/02/2023 08:10

What is a gendered function? There is no such thing. Because gender is in the eye of the beholder. It's like identifying as beautiful.

nzborn · 08/02/2023 08:08

This reminds me of when some food companies started advertising their products as gluten free, joining the gluten free bandwagon when this diet became popular years ago. But their product never had gluten in it before. Its all about the sales.

howmanybicycles · 08/02/2023 07:34

Actually what I think they mean is 'get back in your box and stop demanding rights and recognition'.

All the parts of womanhood that are interesting (read into that all the various flavours that are part of it) are being commandeered to be owned and controlled by men.

And the demand as you say, is that women shut up, stop whining and arguing because of hurting the feelings of the muggers, and just accept they aren't people and that men are now men, and men are now women, and the group formerly known as women are..... well. Subhuman thingies that there aren't any words for that men don't get shirty about 'but I want that one too!'.

So the answer is a comprehensive, yeah on your bike with alllll of that mate.

NewPanDrawer · 07/02/2023 19:05

This post is not about transwomen claiming to have periods, which always sparks such fury on here.

This is about transmen actually having them. The fact that the words are muddled is a problem. But all they are saying is that biological women with dysphoria who want to be known as men still menstruate. And they don't want to have to revert to identifying as women to be able to say so.

I am so glad to have Oscar's nonsense genderlessly mansplained to me.

mrshoho · 08/02/2023 07:45

What I want to know is why these stupid companies whose main business is supplying period products are spouting this crap. 99.99% of their customers are women and girls. Girls need clear and factual information regarding their bodies.

Beardy men in skirts love telling us that being a woman is 'nuanced',when what they really mean is 'I haven't got a fucking clue what I'm talking about'.

Actually what I think they mean is 'get back in your box and stop demanding rights and recognition'.

howmanybicycles · 08/02/2023 07:33

No-one is excluded just because irrelevant identity details are not mentioned when discussing a biological thing which affects only females. I don't remember short women specifically being mentioned when period are discussed which makes me feel marginalised. Nor grey haired atheists. This is so triggering.

I hate the word nuance too. It’s a smug twat’s word.

JuneOsborne · 08/02/2023 06:06

I'm going reimagine period pants.

I'm going to create ones with a patch at the front designed to make sure you have cramps. Then a patch at the back for javelin arse. Then I'm going to make sure they have a big pouch of blood in them and release it randomly.

I ma also going to.make them.of nylon, so the nethers wearing them are sweaty and smelly. I'm then going to build into the gusset a scratchy pad that scrunches up uncomfortably and sticks to your pubes. And give it a good dose of artificial scent too. I might imbue the pad with candida for good measure.

The instructions will state that they are to be worn for 5 solid days. They can come off for 5 minutes a day for a shower.

I'm going to call them MENstruators.

SLS500 · 08/02/2023 05:36

I think if we stop giving this nonsense attention it might disappear

This narrative, that not all women experience menstruation, is irresponsible.

At least 99.4% to 99.7% of all female people experience menstruation at least once in their lives. Those who do not, need to see a doctor, because the conditions preventing menarche (the name for the first period) often need medical treatment.

That makes this as near universal a female condition as it is possible to find. Especially considering that with medical treatment many girls in that 0.3% to 0.6% experience menarche, too.

Referring to women not menstruating (after menarche), because of health or age - no idea what bodily factors are if not either one of the former, but leaving out pregnancy and breastfeeding is just more dishonesty.

Yes it's the difference between: not menstruating because you have a medical problem or are not the right age, vs not menstruating because... you are not a woman. Very big difference between, for example, not menstruating because you had a hysterectomy because you had endometriosis, vs not menstruating because you are a male with a healthy male body.
