Any full-form title would’ve been much too long, so apologies to anyone who was expecting the start of an FWR paper-game of some kind there…

Anyway, the organiser of the protest at which the “decapitate T*RFs” sign was being wafted about at is also organising the counter-protest for Posie’s Let Women Speak event in Glasgow. (Speaking of said sign, I wonder if TERFery involving a protected belief would bump it to a hate crime? Sentencing guidelines at end document.])

The main counter-protest group are the Cabaret Against Hate Speech - & as per my first link, they’re now being backed by Furries Against Fascism.

As I’m sure everyone on FWR knows, Posie personally invites everyone to attend her events & selects the speakers. So if someone turns up & quotes Hitler on The Big Lie they’re her bestie; stunned silence is rapturous applause; & the Bystander Effect does not exist either. Thus it is vital to ensure nobody ever again hear anything women have to say. Whatever they’re talking about. It’s transphobic because reasons. (Astonishing they’d try “this means TERFs/GCs are all Nazis!” because their own logic then makes them paedophiles, zoophiles, murderers, & rapists several times over. I mean, of course said logic is never thus applied because it would be dreadfully transphobic.)

So the stated aim of the counter protest is to drown out the protest. The police now have powers to make protestors reduce their volume. The way it (in theory) functions is:
This power can only be used when the police reasonably believe that the noise from the protest may cause serious disruption to the activities of an organisation or cause a significant impact on people in the vicinity of the protest. “Impact” is defined as intimidation, harassment, alarm or distress with the police then having to consider whether the impact is significant.

Now surely it’s in the best interests of the police to use the powers with the counter-protestors (yes, I know it’s Police Scotland…)? Why? Because if they allow those gobshites to drown out women’s voices, they are unlawfully preventing the women from protesting & are demonstrating bias. Not allowing the counter-protest to bellow, bash drums & caterwaul continuously &/or too loudly &/or right by the Standing For Women group is not preventing them from protesting, nor is it demonstrating bias. And, obviously, the entire point of the counter-protest IS to “cause harassment, alarm & distress” - & to intimidate & silence the women.

Further, if Police Services facilitate this nonsense, Posie may opt not to notify them of events in future. She’s not legally obliged to do so & a shift to some personal-connection organising would rather spoil the fascism, sorry, fun, of the counter-protestors. Perhaps most obviously, Posie can kick up the volume of her PA System as loud as it goes & invest in as many speakers as possible.

So if the police don’t want women speaking at rock-concert volumes (& just now they probably really REALLY don’t want that) I’d think it’s in their best interests to address this situation. It’s particularly important they up their game on protecting the Let Women Speak protestors given the escalation in violence by counter protestors; including in [the nature of] their threats. I very much worry though, that despite all the revelations about VAWG & resultant resolutions it is going to take a serious act of violence for the police to get their act together on this. It’s been made very clear by TRAs that this counterprotest needs to be kept a significant distance from the Standing For Women one. The police have the power to allow women to speak & be heard - the question is whether or not they’ll chose to do so.

(Apologies if this is [a bit] incoherent: I promise there is a point in there, but I have had no sleep on top of the usual wobbly brain issues & it is NOT a winning combination.)

Many in Scotland are peaking over the GRR bill, and Isla Bryson providing a timely example of that thing that we were told never happens.

The furries turning up in their pornified furry suits will peak some more.

Protesters and counter-protesters have an equal right to be simultaneously in a public space. Both groups have to behave within the legal limits applicable to Scotland. The police are there as a buffer to ensure if either side crosses that line into illegal activity, then they can act. It’s not the job of the police to move on protesters or counter protesters because the other group feels harassed, distressed or intimidated by their presence and engagement in legally permissible activities. To do as you suggest- suppress counter protesters for the benefit of protesters- would absolutely be demonstrating political bias.

It makes any person with reading comprehension and critical thinking ability think ‘What the fuck!’ And those posters have little understanding that their posts end up showing the world how the inanity that passes for activism comes about.

Because to some people, those accusations actually make sense as they don’t look beyond the superficial. Works on Twitter. Doesn’t work very well on MN.

TinselAngel · 25/01/2023 11:22

It's an interesting new silencing technique from the TRAs that drawing a comparison is now "quoting". Presumably it's intended to stop a valid comparison being drawn.

SinnerBoy · 25/01/2023 11:10

Yes, I've definitely noticed some particular posters doing that.

You are kidding right? As soon as you quote Hitler, you have lost the high moral ground, if indeed you ever held it. It is never acceptable.

"This is something Hitler said and this is why it's comparable to what the TRA zealots are saying."

It's not the same as: "See? Hitler was right!"

Post from Mishy is just the usual misrepresentation sinner. Sometimes I doubt that some posters really read the things they comment on. They are just so keen on the gotchas.

You obviously don’t understand the parallel the person reading was drawing.

"So if someone turns up & quotes Hitler on The Big Lie they’re her bestie."

And of course the speaker quoting Mein Kampf was making a perfectly reasonable point about how trans activists use propaganda. She was clearly not endorsing Hitler. Once again, they are maliciously distorting what a woman has said, not just to smear her, but the rest of the movement.

Datun · 24/01/2023 22:55

Those women aren't nazis though, including the one quoting Hitler.

The people holding the signs do threaten women, all the fucking time.

One side spit, threaten, intimate and act violently, the other side ... aren't Nazis.

IcakedefargeIam · 24/01/2023 22:53

Meh, I expect that's the last we'll see of signs like that then.Hmm

NitroNine · 24/01/2023 22:35

Apparently not, @IcakedefargeIam 🙄

From my OP “The Eldritch TRA” got

“One tra had a sign, see how bad all TRA’s are”
~ one paragraph later
“Just because someone quoted mein kampf doesn’t mean we’re all Nazis”
#DoubleStandards

I mean, the Nazis would technically have me, I suppose. In a death-statistic sort-of way.

What sort of person thinks “oh look, there’s the post written by the actual cripple - let’s see if I can’t get a brigade going on a vulnerable woman who’s stated in her post she’s less able than usual, that’ll be good craic?” 🤔

Decapitate TERFs has got to be the turning point for the police surely?

Furries turning up to protest dressed as kids toys is rather proving everyones' point isn't it?

I always think certain incidents will be the turning point but they never seem to effect any change. I truly hope a bunch of creepy men and young teenagers dressed as big breasted furries will be enough but I doubt it, not when black balaclava men are getting away with the intimidation tactics they are using. I’m so sick of this crap - men need to leave women alone!!

I didn't go though I wanted to, but the Newcastle one seemed very well policed with the people who weren't part of the event kept far enough away to provide some humour...

I don't know if Newcastle police are just reasonably good at securing protests, they do have some rainbow flag cars.

Some years ago, I took my daughter into town and when we got of the metro, there was an EDL deme. Probably fewer than 15, with 2 or 3 women. They were football hooligan / ex skinhead types, mostly pissed. There was a crowd looking at them, I'm not sure they were counter protestors, they mostly seemed to be ordinary Saturday shoppers.

Most people were pointing and literally laughing at them. There was a woman with two kids by me, and she wandered down, the Police told her she couldn't go near and she said, "Oh, I was just taking the bairns to Nudo..."

They escorted her down there! It was hilarious and the racists eventually slunk off.

The irony being of course is that Furry culture has a significant Nazi problem.

slate.com/human-interest/2021/11/nazi-furries-deradicalization-efforts.html

There was a mass shooting in the US last year by a right wing furry.

www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/furry-community-portland-shooter-1311620/

100% the Furries in attendance will have racists or "former" racists in their ranks as well as the usual sexual harassers.

The Glasgow demo must go ahead, but anyone in attendance take particular care especially if you are from a minority background.

Tabitha1960 · 23/01/2023 20:36

Massive own goal.

Bring on the furries!

Buzzinwithbez · 23/01/2023 17:26

I didn't realise it was a protest, just women gathering to speak and to be heard by anyone who cares to listen.
I didn't go though I wanted to, but the Newcastle one seemed very well policed with the people who weren't part of the event kept far enough away to provide some humour (I think some of them may have been dancing to the Thomas the Tank theme tune) and not be a bother.

Brefugee · 23/01/2023 14:49

Mind you Bref I don't think I have ever seen anything like it at one of the SFW rallies.

same. To me, whenever i see pictures of the Let Women Speak rallies, the signs are all about things that women would like to have (back) - rather than harm they want to do, or rights they want taken away.

Whenever i see pride events that focus on trans issues (and i do agree that some trans issues definitely need to be talked about and they must also be protected in some instances) there are a lot of calls to violence.

Helleofabore · 23/01/2023 13:05

Mind you Bref I don't think I have ever seen anything like it at one of the SFW rallies.

That is another thing that KJK and team do well. Often they provide signs and placards to maintain a consistent message.

I would be shocked if anyone retaliated in kind. But then again, 'in kind' takes on a whole new meaning if your life is ruled by hyperbole to this degree.... misgendering would no doubt be considered 'in kind'.

Brefugee · 23/01/2023 12:42

i think the key thing now for the LWS events must be not to have similar placards - but keep to the ones that support women's autonomy and single sex spaces. Don't fall in to the trap of doing what the TRAs do.

And then point out the differences in approach as often as possible.

seXX · 23/01/2023 12:29

I was hoping to attend this Let Women Speak event but I was a bit worried about safety. However, I didn't see any violent anti-trans protesters at the recent 'decapitate terfs' rally, and I'm assuming that was down to police Scotland's excellent efforts at keeping them all under control, so I'm sure they'll do the same on 5th February! Hmm Grin

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/01/2023 12:00

Presumably some of the charmers amongst this lot are going to be front left & centre of the protests:

I think the main subject has organised the protest.

ProbablyShouldntbut · 23/01/2023 11:37

"So the stated aim of the counter protest is to drown out the protest. The police now have powers to make protestors reduce their volume." - no they don't that is England only legislation - it does not apply in Scotland.

Helleofabore · 23/01/2023 11:15

Datun · 23/01/2023 10:49

The violence has ramped up, probably due to the government's intervention and it's all becoming a lot more obvious. So I suspect there is an element of might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb going on now.

They're certainly not in the slightest bit interested in showing any kind of credible, respectable, articulate front. (Not that they ever really had one.)

A good point Datun

I should qualify that.

I encourage them to show the world who they are at every opportunity. Without resorting to violence or involving non-consensual people of any age.
