So any criticism (or more likely ridicule) has them fearing actual assault.

I agree that the example quoted was unacceptable but from what i have seen that was cherry picked and the vast number of comments had a very different tone. But literal violence none the less. 🙄

it isn't anti trans anger. It is erasing women from history anger.
And if you think that is anti-trans you're part of the problem, tbh.
pro woman =/= anti-trans no matter how many times TRA try to say it is.

I’m just gobsmacked, it’s like you did not even read any of the comments that were made on SM regarding the I Joan play and have created some sort of alternate reality where none of the comments even referenced the fact that Joan was being portrayed as a non binary woman. They didn’t give Joan a penis for crying out loud, so how is this erasing women from history?

Bog off. I said in my first (I think) post that each and every instance of death threats should be investigated and prosecuted where necessary.

You were being a bit disingenuous saying it was anti trans. It isn't anti trans. It isn't against the actors (and again since you obviously didn't remember: death threats are never ok). It is anger, and i totally get it, at transing women in history.
They. Were. Women.

I wasn’t being “disingenuous”- you’re the one guilty of suggesting it was that and “looking for offence”.

Anger at “transing women in history” is still anti-trans anger

The anger wasn’t ooooh you have rubbish French accent so you should die a horrible death.

It was anti-trans anger. And death threats are always offensive, to even suggest otherwise makes what you said before look like you were just saying a platitude of yes, yes death threats are quite awful really, prosecute….fullest extent of the law and all that in lip service before admitting what you really think which is…

people are angry……it’s TRAs fault for making people angry…nothing to see here…

yes i know that. But it's not at trans actors.

Do you understand why people are angry? because from your last post it doesn't seem as though you do

Being angry is not an excuse for death threats. I’m shocked you think it is, it’s almost like you approve of such illegal violence inciting hate speech.

@Onnabugeisha I'm still seeing the use of death threats as an excuse to silence any sort of criticism they're facing. Who knows, they may have set up anonymous accounts to send death threats to themselves (it has happened before)?

It's an attempt to make it look like they're very brave for acting in a play, when in fact a lot of what they stand for is making it less safe for people, particularly as a lot of theatres in London are ditching single-sex toilets.

Who knows, they may have set up anonymous accounts to send death threats to themselves (it has happened before)?

How fucking low can you go by even writing such nonsense?

It seems like an attempt to lump in all the justified scorn (I couldn’t believe how uneducated their blurb about the Joan of Arc thing was) with vile death threats.

The real problem demonstrated here is misogyny on social media, but these people have bought into an analytical framework that prevents them from correctly identifying it.

There may be isolated incidences, which are never OK but as a group i think we all know which lot are sending death threats in the same frequency we'd say have a nice day.

Well, we've all seen this, but nothing from feminists, or even women who aren't, directed the other way:

Onnabugeisha · 19/01/2023 14:02

@Brefugee
well no but the leap to "there is a lot of hate for transpeople" when we are clearly talking about the actors is a bit - looking for offense.

These are actors who never received death threats until they were cast in the role of a non-binary trans character. To pretend the death threats were not at all linked to the portrayal of a non-binary trans character is frankly, ridiculous. There is no “looking for offence”….being sent death threats is both offensive AND illegal.

Brefugee · 19/01/2023 13:43

I loath some TRAs simply because they are bad faith actors wanting to hate on women with impunity. Fair play to them, they have achieved their aims in record time.

When, if you took the time to look at why people are angry about these "woke" updates to plays is because, again and again and a-fucking-gain, women get erased.

Boiledbeetle · 19/01/2023 13:43

Hoppinggreen · 19/01/2023 12:57

Oh yes, middle aged feminists- the group most likely to commit violent acts 🙄

Yeah, just as soon as I've had a nap then a cup of tea taken my painkillers then gone for another nap I'll maybe think about putting in my diary a future date on which to think about committing violence.

in the mean time I'll build up slowly, I'm thinking I might actually tell the cat they aren't actually my boss!

We honestly aren't the group people should be scared of in all this. If we are the hard evidence would be shoved in our faces at every opportunity. Yet it never appears.

Yep, there’s a lot of hate in the world towards transpeople.

we're talking about actors here, are they trans? But if we're going to trade threats, i have seen absolute vile, in massive numbers, comments like that towards women. It's not big and it's not clever but they are not generally coming from middle aged feminists, are they?

Well, you see when it comes to actors, many hateful people tend to confuse the character for the actor. How many actors who play villains are hated and how many who play heroes are loved? So, it’s not unusual for actors who play a hated demographic to become a proxy or scape goat for a bigots hatred.

I have no idea who comments like that come from, all I know is that most GC activists are not hateful nor prone to death threats. So we can neither say it was a GC activist, not rule it out with 100% confidence. Especially since not all GC activists are female feminists.

Having said that: I believe they should be investigated (in all cases) and those who send them held to account.

Yes. It would certainly make the world a nicer place for feminists if they were.

I agree. And brefugees point about women also not being taken seriously is a good one. All such threats against anyone should be taken more seriously. It will only benefit everyone to do so.

It's the sort of thing that many of the delightful men we come across on Twitter say, so I can sympathise. But I'm not sure what the answer is, other than social media platforms taking more action. I feel the wider "anonymised hate" they are talking about is hinting at the backlash they got from GC feminists, because it's no 1 accusation in the TRA playbook against women on Twitter.

Onnabugeisha · 19/01/2023 13:30

bellinisurge · 19/01/2023 13:27

"Thank God you are fat because fat burns quicker" is a revolting thing to say. And I'm pretty confident that is the sort of thing a man would say. GC women don't talk like that when they raise concerns about the eradication of women's history.

Yep, there’s a lot of hate in the world towards transpeople.

ReunitedThorns · 19/01/2023 13:24

I agree that death threats should be taken seriously, but we must now reconsider what a death threat is in the age of social media.

Before social media a death threat was typically a phone call or letter, that meant someone had got hold of your contact details and put effort into it.

Someone sending a tweet, whilst obnoxious, saying that "fat burns quicker" is not in the same category of death threat as the above.

If people are sending death threats which contain specific information, such as dealing with time and place then they are serious, or at the very least a form of stalking.

I'm just a bit cautious of everyone saying that they receive death threats these days, particularly as it lessens the impact of people who receive real and detailed death threats.

Anyone sending a death threat over SM to an actor in a play knows exactly where that actor will be and when…because they’ll be at the performances in the theatre. It is very easy to stalk and carry out such a threat. It’s in the same category as sending a letter to a persons address. This isn’t a typical SM death threat to a person with an anonymous user name who could be anyone, and be anywhere at anytime.

Brefugee · 19/01/2023 13:28

Your narrative is damaging, should we now ignore all women who receive misogynist death threats

to be fair, most women who complain about death threats are ignored or told they're not credible so ignoring them seems to be the MO of the police.

Having said that: I believe they should be investigated (in all cases) and those who send them held to account.

But again: just because, say, Joan of Arc didn't submit to the gender roles forced on woman at that time, doesn't make her not a woman. It makes her a very special feisty type of woman. Transing the dead is like the Mormons (i think it's them?) converting vast numbers of dead people post mortem, to make it look like the religion is more widespread than it is.

bellinisurge · 19/01/2023 13:27

Brefugee · 19/01/2023 13:25

the comments on that boil mostly down to "stop trying to erase women from history and they'll be fine" Grin
