Complications from trans surgery!

I know it's a daily mail article but I can't help thinking. We only ever hear positive stories but the figures tell us this. I really hope the men and woman are getting the support they need from these complications. 🥺

Half of trans surgery patients suffer pain, sexual issues years later mol.im/a/11629421 via dailym.ai/android

Mary Harrington calls this stuff meat lego - the belief that humans are a series of interchangeable parts to be swapped around as we wish.

Not transphobic, but looking at the scary facts.
One of my best friends (yes, I know) was a mtf trans woman, who had surgery aged 40 ish.
She was brilliant and funny and warm.
Some people ostracised her because she always had odour issues. She also confided in me that her neovagina had shortened over ten years so that she could no longer have penetrative sex.
She had a massive totally disabling stroke six years before she died, after years of taking artificial hormone treatment.
She still thought it was all worth it.
She died before the rise of misogynistic trans activity and before I became GC. I wonder what she would have made of it all.

I think Stonewall have making noises. Cynical me, thinks they likely see detransitioners as another revenue stream. But if it gets them help.....

I'd like to see detransitioners get help too but I would hate to see them exploited again by an organisation as unprincipled as Stonewall.

IcakethereforeIam · 17/01/2023 00:35

I think understandably people with transition regret are reluctant to speak up. They risk not only losing their community, but having it turn on them.

They may feel ashamed, embarrassed, stupid, like people who've fallen for other cons sometimes do. Some of them may feel they've put their family through hell and, possibly, in serious debt. They may be estranged from their families.

I believe it's not unusual for some people to fluctuate between trans and detrans. It must be so difficult.

They may be afraid of mockery from us. Or that we might use them against the trans community, their friends.

It's a horrible situation for anyone to be in. How could you expect to find help and compassion from people you've been told are your enemies?

I think Stonewall have making noises. Cynical me, thinks they likely see detransitioners as another revenue stream. But if it gets them help.....

Let's hear Daniel Radcliffe, and the rest speaking up or putting their hands in their pockets.

There is a Canadian transwoman on twitter (whom I like), who posted about approaching medics regarding Canada's Medical Assistance In Dying program in the future. They've had all the procedures, including vaginoplasty. They posted that they didn't want to "get old in this body".

Doesn't that make you feel sick with dread for the current generation?

There will definitely be suicides, assisted or otherwise. :(

Others will just plough on for years, requiring patchup work on an irregular basis, waiting longer and longer for each treatment (as healthcare services are clogged up with aging and increasingly obese populations anyway) and taking longer to recover each time. A new Type II Diabetes, basically.

What a fucking shitshow.

"Just live your life happily as a nice gender-non-conforming gay man, find a lovely boyfriend and live happily ever after, The End" sounds a lot nicer as an alternative life story, doesn't it?

Seems like an expectation Vs reality situation. They want a porn stars vagina and end up with a surgically created orifice that behaves in some ways similar to your average woman's vagina. As a born female I have at times experienced many of the complaints on that list

I was reading feeling really awful imagining. I had major surgery this year and there’s nothing more than a want to heal and return to normal.

But you have a point actually. Real vaginas generally are troublesome - painful, bloody, can be dry, tight or malodourous. I suppose it is different but would they want an actual real vagina if they knew all the dramas it entails.

Creating a gaping wound leads to high rates of complications.
Who’d have thought it.

When grown adults are choosing this when there is plenty of information out there stating the high risk, they can do what they like. Presumably they are making an informed decision.
When teenagers are clamouring for double mastectomies and hysterectomies we should be putting more time and effort into mental health care and not affirming this delusion.

Some (indeed many) adults are vulnerable to ideologies which have cult-like aspects, so it always concerns me that they tend to be forgotten. I agree with what you have said regarding teenagers though.

Canada's assisted dying is a whole other shit show. I'm not in the least religious but this, and transitioning, are stark examples of the road to hell being paved with good intentions. I believe they wish to extend it to children, I hope I'm wrong.

I absolutely agree.
I think MAID and transitioning will both be looked back on as being barbaric.
I can see the original good intentions behind them but there's a dirty rotten underbelly that's only just starting to be exposed.

Ericaequites · 17/01/2023 00:22

@TheKeatingFive - I saw that video yesterday. It disgusted and frightened me on a very primal level. Transplanting in a complete set of female or male genitalia won’t work at this point. A natal male having periods or bearing a baby is wicked taboo.

kc431 · 17/01/2023 00:21

Jeez - in my mind there is no difference between these surgeries and this guy for example www.indy100.com/viral/black-alien-project-tattoos-modification-2658822636. Mutilating yourself in an extreme way (getting rid of important functional bits of your body) in the hope it will make a mental issue better.

  1. Most members of the public don’t understand that most ‘trans women’ are heterosexual and keep their penis. A lot are in lesbian groups and try to sleep with us. Obviously we don’t want them. Typically they can get quite threatening when we say ‘no’.
  2. These surgeries are dangerous and experimental.
  3. The majority of the kids who are being drugged and having surgery performed on them are same-sex attracted. It’s gay conversion therapy in many cases. All to justify the feelings of what are mostly heterosexual males (see point 1). A huge number also have autism, which is a tragedy - how can no-one see the abuse of people with disabilities?
  4. Open discussion of the effects of this and on detransitioners is badly needed.

That thread is devastating. There are replies from two people who lost friends to suicide due to transition regret. What are we doing to people?

Lois is only early-30s, too. Had surgery at 19 if I'm reading it right, and after 13 years, the health issues are already this bad.

I want to find all the surgeons and scream at them.

A deliberately othering thread under the guise of caring. The level of transphobia on here is gross.

Can you please be a bit more specific by providing examples of this?

If we were transphobic, we wouldn't care less about the serious lasting damage that many trans-identifying people are blindly led into having done to their body through their misplaced trust in the surgeons who perform it.

You'll be telling us next that all of us who have ever grabbed our children away from situations that could have irreparably hurt or even killed them are 'child-phobic' i.e. we only want to prevent them from coming to lasting harm because we hate them?!?!?!

@KimberleyClark Natal females who take T are much more likely to have children with autism. This may be because their uterus parent has undiagnosed or diagnosed autism. It also leads credence to Baton-Cohen’s theory that excess T may be one cause of autism. Saying the politically correct uterus parent disgusts me. Mothers have babies.
Bottom surgery for natal females can be done with thigh muscle tissue. The cosmetic results are terrible. Loss of continence and orgasms is common. It costs a much as a decent condominium at $ 300k. There are much cheaper and better ways to impress potential romantic partners.

I follow a Canadian transexual male (that's how they describe themself) on Twitter. They say they were rushed into surgery years ago and now have regrets and complications. They are now seeking voluntary euthanasia due to this. It's very sad.

If we are already seeing complications just a few years down the line with quite young people, what on earth is going to happen over the next few decades, with an ever growing number of people requiring more and more extensive repair work to patch them up as they age? In a society where the "aging society" process will continue to put more and more pressures on medical services anyway even for reasonably healthy people?

Modifying your body in any significant and permanent way always brings the question of "How is this going to work as you age? Will repairs have to be redone? Will the repair/re-work surgery itself cause other problems, which also need to be fixed? How risky will the surgery be on an increasingly aged body?"

Those of us who have tried to bloody well ask these questions - like "Look, this is moving awfully fast. Could we all just please slow down and DISCUSS the trans issue first, before diving in and sending a bunch of young kids down the trans track?" - have been demonized and it's just so fucking frustrating to watch the potential problems finally being openly discussed now.

greenteafiend · 17/01/2023 00:00

The major complications (Grade III-IV) included urethral stenosis (20.5 percent), urethral fistula (1.9 percent), intraoperative rectal injury (1.9 percent), necrosis (primarily along the wound edges) (1.4 percent), and rectovaginal fistula (0.9 percent).

Christ. Fistulas are dreadful things and often very hard or impossible to repair properly. And these are NOT small figures.

You think it's caring to encourage young people to have irreversible surgery which may harm them and leave them with lifelong health problems without giving them this information before they decide? I think that is horrifically unethical. Don't kid yourself you care of you think this is OK.

Is there anything that isn't Transphobia in your opinion?

I cannot agree with you that being appalled with idea that over half the people who have SRS are left permanently damaged is transphobic.

Or that it's transphobic to discuss concerns about whether anyone can adequately consent to a surgery that has a 1 in 2 chance of leaving you in physical pain for years if not forever.

Do you believe that this is being made clear to all surgical patients for these operations before they give consent?

If yes, does that raise any concern for their mental health in your mind? The idea that a person who is physically well, not in ill health, not in physical pain, would voluntarily embark on a surgery that has a 55% chance of causing them pain, a 34% chance of preventing them being able to have sexual function, a 23% chance of causing urinary incontinence. What should the requirement for psychiatric support be before surgery to give confidence that a person willing to take this massive risk is competent to make that decision?
