On Laura Kuenssberg just now.
Utterly useless. And why are both using gender instead of sex?

Safe spaces set aside exclusively for the 99.9% about whom ‘woman’ means their biology?

Or, spaces for the full 100% who are called women but among whom there are 0.1% men who ‘are all about’ wanting to be women but are male biologically.

Does anyone know if his maths is right on the basis of the census?

nilsmousehammer · 16/01/2023 13:22

Yeah now explain what you mean 'safe space for women' Starmer.

I'll open the book now on it actually meaning 'women and any male people who want to be in there with them'

Parisj · 16/01/2023 12:14

The Times is reporting that Starmer said sex based rights matter 😲 think it was in an LBC interview, Guardian also reporting. And may support Sunak blocking Scottish legislation

'I approach it on the basis that for 99.9-something percent of women, it is all about biology. Sex-based rights matter, and we must preserve all those wins that we’ve had for women over many years, and including safe spaces for women.'

I saw one reply to that tweet which struck me as possibly quite true:

.I have absolutely no trust in Starmer; I suspect LabourLGBTQ+++ has said agree ‘No’ to 16 year olds so you’ll appear reasonable pushing for Self-ID for 18+ and rapists in women’s prisons

I cannot see why ‘Trans lives are non negotiable’ is an understandable response to Keir Starmer saying 16 is too young for such a momentous step. What does it mean exactly? Suicide if you don’t get a certificate at 16?

I thought a GRC wasn’t even supposed to make a difference to rights in the Equality Act over and above the rights afforded in any case to the protected characteristic of Gender Reassignment.

There's a reply under there which I can agree with:

"Both sidesing isn't going get him anywhere."

No. It isn't.

Must say, I'd never have bet on the proponents for sterilising gay children, to also be so concerned about damage to 16yos in the army! Almost like they don't really care, yet found A Thing To Point At.

Labour cannot continue to treat our lives as a debate

Do you think it would ever work if women said that?

Toys.Out of pram.

This - and all because they want 16 year olds to be able to "change sex".

Well there's nothing like direct experience of discovering that rationality, reasonability and capacity to consider anyone else's needs or interests is missing from this political lobby.

You do exactly as they say all the time, or they'll scream, Keir. It's not like we didn't tell you.

ArabellaScott · 15/01/2023 20:20

So it begins:

'The comments made today by Party leadership represent a further shattering of the trust we warned about last month.

Labour cannot continue to treat our lives as a debate.'

Re the GRR Bill, I think he views us as guinea pigs and is waiting to see how it goes over the next couple of years and he’ll use that to determine his position for the next General election. I don’t think he’ll do anything but waffle until then.

I fear you are right.
The problem is that he wants to avoid making any decision, so he wants to kick the can down the road. "Waiting to see" is what we hope would happen, the reality is he would resist any pushes to actually find out what the result was.
No one whos chosen course of action is to delay ever wants to actually deal with the thing being delayed. Especially politicians. Once delay is chosen, it becomes delay forever.
Starmer would never address it, unless forced to against his will.
Evidence would be ignored, positivly avoided, make it go away.
Starmer is most comfortable on the fence, he has no vision, no prinicpals, nothing he's willing to stand up for beyond his own arse. Considering how bad the Tories are doing Starmer is the very worst insipid bland milquetoast alternative at a time we desperately need alternatives. He is an invisible man trying to hide.

ArabellaScott · 15/01/2023 19:24

Be interesting to hear how Keir's newfound hesitancy about self ID goes down.

Parisj · 15/01/2023 19:13

This was a very prominent piece on the BBC 6 O'clock news

IwantToRetire · 15/01/2023 19:04

I dont think there is anything in his statement to do with actually caring about women and / or the GRR.

This is just political tactics. On the one had he can be caring about young people (16 is too young) but on the other hand still accept self id.

And given Labour shocking losses in Scotland no way is he going to be part of any Government attempt to block a law passed by the Scottish Parliament.

So the "i'm just waiting for the legal advice" is so that he doesn't have to be seen to be behind any move to block the bill. Because he knows that, any attempt to do will bring out all sorts of people who dont care about gender recognition, let alone women's rights, who will get really angry about Westminister over ruling MSPs. (Not forgetting that this is something Welsh Assembly is looking and, and NI if they weren't in perpetual gridlock).

So for him its a win win.

Also, not just Starmer but all these people going on about safeguarding the EA.

The new scottish bill doesn't impact what is already written there about SSE

the problem is not just in Scotland, but all over the UK nobody bothers with or places any value on the SSEs.

So one very slight positive out of this is maybe a few people who dont listen to women, might now recognise that the SSE are too easily ignored.

The mere fact that women who are 50+% of the population are only allowed a few instances when their rights take precedent over a tiny, tiny minority, shows how low down the pecking order women are.

Logically the exemptions should have been those few occassion when a GRC took precedence over women's sex based rights. Like ... marriage and ... ???

ArabellaScott · 15/01/2023 18:53

And Keir's statement is front page BBC News. Grin

ArabellaScott · 15/01/2023 18:51

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-64281548

'"I have concerns about the provision in Scotland, in particular the age reduction to 16 and, in particular, the rejection of our amendment in relation to the Equalities Act."

Pressed on whether you are old enough at 16 to decide to change gender, he replied: "No, I don't think you are."'

YES KEIR!!! (It's the Equality Act, but I'll let you off).

ArabellaScott · 15/01/2023 18:45

ResisterRex · 15/01/2023 10:41

I agree @rogdmum. Mr "I used to be DPP dontcha know" Starmer suddenly wants to wait and see what the legal advice says? Not really credible.

Mark Harper had a reasonable position and didn't even try to play the "two sides are equally toxic" card (twitter.com/bbcpolitics/status/1614568610898542593?s=46&t=Bici_MMvRpXq7VAjcvSPwA)

As well as it not being a good idea to
lower the age of consent for a Gender Recognition Certificate to 16,

what about not teaching and nudging children into thinking they may be transgender in the first place?
