Census releases data on gender identity

This is from the 2021 census:

www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/culturalidentity/genderidentity/bulletins/genderidentityenglandandwales/census2021

Only 0.5% of people identify as a different gender/sex from the one they were born with.

I'm trying to make sense of the data and what it means - are non-binary and other categories all included in the 'identified as trans' in Figure 2 overall population by age graph? I'm struggling to interpret that graph (figure 2) can anyone explain it to me please?

If this is the map picture, trans identities are listed separately from nonbinary and 'other' identities.

You can choose a different category from the menu icon following the sentence "Gender identity the same as sex registered at birth." Nonbinary is one of the choices, so then you get a map showing the percentages of nonbinary in various parts.

FriendofJoanne · 04/02/2023 18:24

I'm also very curious about the 35-44 age group who ticked gender different from sex at birth but didn't give any identity.

My partner saw the extra gender question and didn't realise it was bullshit, he just saw that 'male' was an option and since that's what he is, he was just going to tick the box. I imagine that's why most people filled it in did.

thirdfiddle · 27/01/2023 22:44

Which explains why so many mothers of trans children describe themselves as NB
Oh, is that a thing? I hadn't noticed, but it would make sense.

thirdfiddle · 27/01/2023 22:43

This seems regressive and backwards, and it's shocking to see that thinking return after some decades of feminist work.

It really does doesn't it. I am encouraged by hearing my 10 yo DD and her friends being anti-sexism in much more the way we used to be, getting cross about assumptions about what colours they should like, or short hair being taken to mean someone isn't a girl. DD says it's one thing they all agree on. I hope they stay fierce.

Thingybob · 27/01/2023 21:16

Or they're people like us who don't feel any sense of gender identity but as they've bought into the ideology they take that to mean that their label is NB.

@thirdfiddle

Some of these are people who /want/ social roles and fashions that are split by sex stereotypes, only they want to be seen as exempt from the rules. Or they're people like us who don't feel any sense of gender identity but as they've bought into the ideology they take that to mean that their label is NB.

That's a good description of the problem I have with that group:

It presumes that others are comfortable with sexist stereotypes of what it means to be a woman or a man, and that those who are not are not, say, feminists, but some third gender altogether.

This seems regressive and backwards, and it's shocking to see that thinking return after some decades of feminist work.

Hepwo · 27/01/2023 20:20

66% of trans women answered female to the sex question and only 33% answered male (and there was a similar division of sex but in reverse for trans men)

Hilarious. They can't even figure it out themselves! A third disagree with the other two thirds!

Which is it people? Once you have decided, get back to us. In the meantime, while you are fighting amongst yourselves, we will pick too. Only fair huh?

thirdfiddle · 27/01/2023 20:01

That the non-binary category (17,000) in the youngest group is larger than either the trans men category (14,000) or the trans women category (9,000)

That's really interesting isn't it. Somehow people id-ing as nonbinary really rubs in that this is totally a social thing. Nonbinary isn't sex dysphoria. There are no nonbinary-sexed people to look at and say I desperately feel like I should be that. Some of these are people who /want/ social roles and fashions that are split by sex stereotypes, only they want to be seen as exempt from the rules. Or they're people like us who don't feel any sense of gender identity but as they've bought into the ideology they take that to mean that their label is NB.

Did anyone look at the 2nd release a couple of days ago?

www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/culturalidentity/genderidentity/articles/genderidentityageandsexenglandandwalescensus2021/2023-01-25#data-sources-and-quality

66% of trans women answered female to the sex question and only 33% answered male (and there was a similar division of sex but in reverse for trans men). So all in all the data is rubbish. How much did it all cost?

The only interesting thing I picked out if the data is that there is not one non-binary person, male or female, in England or Wales over the age of 75.

What has happened to all those non-binary oldies?

Very interesting, thanks. A few quick impressions:

-I notice that two thirds of those who identify as non-binary are female. So non-binary is female-dominated...

-The overall numbers are far lower than online discussions of various types have suggested. Even the youngest recorded group only has 1% with trans/non-binary identities.

-That two-thirds of trans women gave their sex as female and two-thirds of trans men gave their sex as male does suggest possible problems when they need sex-specific health care. It could be that they are not reporting their sex to their health care providers if they don't report it in the census. Or that the queering of language now affects even them.

-That the non-binary category (17,000) in the youngest group is larger than either the trans men category (14,000) or the trans women category (9,000) seems to matter to me as the non-binary identification does not, in principle, require the person to do anything differently but still qualifies for different treatment. Questions such as what category in sports the non-binary people should be allowed to pick get extremely complicated if they do not differ from the male and female categories in anything but inner identification. (I don't see why sports categories would ever be based on feelings, though, but here the problem becomes glaringly obvious).

Oh ,thanks for the reminder!

So why is legislation being pushed so hard to protect such a small group of people, at the cost of eroding the rights of much larger groups?

Two answers

  1. the legislation is nominally to protect that small group of people you can barely see in the census, but it actually helps 50% - the men.

  2. in progressive stack logic minority = oppressed, so the smaller the minority, the more oppressed you must be. And it's most important to help the oppressed. They do not accept Spock's "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one" logic.

I can’t agree that it helps 50% - the men. It doesn’t in any way help the vast majority of men.

ReunitedThorns · 10/01/2023 23:38

Let's face it, the census has been a massive disappointment for the LGBT+ pressure groups, for years they've banded around figures of 10-15% for gay people, and proudly promote surveys that claim that 50%+ of young adults aren't "straight" (they persuade most to say queer when they are heterosexual, so term straight with a very strict set of rules).

There's been a lack activity from the pressure groups around this as they probably hoped for a much higher number.

Yup

The tiny percentages make the fact that schools see 10% or more trans identitifying "interesting "

Yes, it will be difficult as the under 16s did not answer this question. However once the age data is out (25 Jan) we can have an indication of numbers for 16 to 25 year olds who were indoctrinated at school. People are expecting trans men to be young and transwomen to be in the older age brackets, but if course there are a lot of young men saying they are women. A couple of weeks to wait!

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 08/01/2023 10:24

Surely 46k each of trans men and trans women and 30k of non binary adds up to 138k total as the maximum possible number. And including the non-binary 30k is quite a stretch, as what does that even mean?

96k is the real number. Using the Census data to plan for future needs, that suggests that one hospital and one prison nationwide would be enough for all their needs.

Agree.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 08/01/2023 10:26

Sorry, 48k of each adding up to 96k total. That was a result of fat fingers not ladybrain, I'm quite capable of doing sums.

NecessaryScene · 08/01/2023 10:26

It will be interesting to see the breakdown if the 18000 who gave a different gender identity. I suspect some of these may include the phrase 'sex not gender'.

I don't think so, because the 18,000 is specifically "other gender identities". "Sex not gender" would surely end up in that huge 118,000 "no specific gender identity given" bar.

And just the size of the bar seems to confirm that. How else would you get such a huge "no gender identity specified" bar without it taking all the "sex not gender" responses?

I didn't answer the gender identity question as there was not a none option.
