They describe themselves as non-binary and genderqueer but also say that the phrase “from maleness to femaleness” in Genesis provoked an epiphany.

Oh and there are at least three or four transwomen Anglican vicars now that I know of; so there are probably more than that. And the church seems super fine with it all. Though gay clergy still suffer from discrimination and restrictions on their personal relationships, trans is fine!

littlbrowndog · 02/01/2023 23:33

Och the dude is an attention seeker. That’s it.

Refreshmentsanyone · 02/01/2023 23:32

@WerewolvesAtMidnight but if it were true that non binary isn’t about stereotypes what is it? Why would anyone need to say they are non binary if you don’t think there’s something binary about what other people are doing?

Quite.

What is the difference between a priest and a vicar?

Priests are titles in the Church of England or the Catholic Church. It seems a priest in the C of E who is given a parish can also be called a vicar, so apologies to whoever I corrected earlier, learn something every day.

elgreco · 02/01/2023 23:28

Very little - a vicar is a type of priest (the article says priest; he may or may not be a vicar). It's virtually the same thing just some historical detail, I believe.

Thanks

Quick reply to your suggestion that the C of E will screw women over later this year by saying a woman is anyone who identifies as one.

I don't think there's any possibility of that. It would have to be agreed by General Synod, the Church's governing body. At the last set of elections the makeup of Synod became more traditional in terms of those elected, not less.

Whatever you think of that in general, it means most Synod members take a fairly traditional view of biological sex as binary, and a sceptical view of gender self-ID etc.

The House of Bishops might well move closer towards blessing of gay marriages (I'd say that's likely, following the lead of some other Anglican provinces). But I reckon there's zero chance of Synod defining a woman as anybody who identifies as one.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that. For some reason (though we all KNOW the reason), the CofE is still institutionally pretty hostile to gay clergy and even women with children (a colleague recently had to fight really hard to get proper maternity leave/pay as a vicar; weird employment exemptions mean this still isn’t guaranteed). But they seem very amenable to trans issues. Our local (well attended) church had a transwoman vicar appointed recently and unsurprisingly attendance has absolutely plummeted. “She” is very shouty and domineering. It all seems fine with the diocese and higher up and everything. They are all pro the genderwoo apparently!

Being sermonised at by a preachy man in a dress is par for the course in the CofE, anyway. I cannot say the experience here is much different, even if the vicar is also wearing an unflattering shade of lipstick.

The definition of non binary has recently changed. It used to be the person didn't believe they were male or female. Now it's about feeling not male or female. Its the most idiotic thing and completely sexist. I find non binary females the most annoying it's like they are saying look at me I'm better than you, I'm not going to be a woman and all the shit that comes with it. They are cowards. This non binary vicar is a potential problem if he is going to be spouting gender identity ideology to the congregation especially if children are there. Surely being a man who likes to wear make up etc is far more radical and out there than labelling yourself a non binary oh and gender queer. I hope his wife and children are supported.

If you feel they are thinking they are better than you that might be projection on your side, if you don't adhere to sexist stereotypes what possible reason could they have to think that? Even if you do, each to their own. They don't think women who haven't 'declared' a non binary gender beneath them, that would be almost 50% of their friends, family and colleagues? Also putting up with the comments people make about non binary people and all the rest of the crap that goes with it hardly makes them cowards does it.

@Boiledbeetle oh I have been 'flashed' when I worked in a pub in my youth as temporary bar staff during college. They weren't non binary or trans as far as I were aware just pissed and thinking they were hilarious.

They still flashed you with their phallus though didn't they and if you are flashed with one now by some man in a pair of jeans and beard would you assume he was a man? Or a woman? Or non binary?

Boiledbeetle · 02/01/2023 23:23

Call me a spoil sport but it really is beyond me why it's an 'epiphany' to decide to change your name to 'Bingo' and wear eye shadow, and why anything in this article warrants being in the news. Has no one found an image of Jesus in a burnt crumpet this week? Good luck to Vicar Bingo I truly hope the discovery of their non binary self makes them more happy than simply being loved by their family and being a good vicar to their congregation.

Oh I don't know one day whilst cleaning out some boxes of haven't been used for a while stuff I found some very very very old odds and sods of make-up from those times sure if felt pushed to at lust look half alive. And I looked at it and thought you know what fuck it, I don't like it, I can't apply it properly, I don't ever have to wear it again and promptly uoended out all into the rubbish bag.

Was that an epiphinay. It was also the same time that the last remain items of clothing bought out of the women's section of next (had by that time had an important job and had needed to not look like id been dragged through a hedge backwards) went to charity.

I also reclaimed my nickname of Boiled.

However I still think I'm a woman and not a non binary one just because I have completely abandoned the (admittedly in my already extremely limited) shackles of make up and , shudders, blouses.

I think I'd have more respect for bingo if he'd just say this is who i am in going to be a priest but I'm also a man who likes to dress in clothes and wear make-up in a style that these days ( cos I don't remember then making this much fuss in the 80s about make-up and a frock) is consider unmanly.

@WerewolvesAtMidnight Title of the article: 'Church of England’s first non-binary vicar says God ‘guided’ their identity'

Fair enough - maybe some people are interested in their non-binary identity. I find it heart warming that having grown up in a household where they were taught being gay was sinful they changed their views and broadened their horizons, which I'm sure makes them a better vicar/priest. I just am a bit cynical that rather than this being about what they can do for others, talking about how the church can be more welcoming and open minded, campaigning for the church to accept same sex marriage, they have to turn it into something about themselves and trivial things like bright clothes and sparkly eye shadow!

I agree that part struck me as well. Other articles suggest he does campaign or at least speak on behalf of the LGBT community so there is that.

The 'non binary' females I know are mostly teenage girls who have changed absolutely nothing about themselves other than made up pronouns and a change to a non binary name. It seems to be a mix of girls who have suffered trauma and want to identify away from it somehow, girls looking for social cache who want to be unique and 'not like other girls' (particularly as being 'cishet' is social suicide in Schools) and girls who like the control of it - making their parents and family dance to their tune.

His community don’t need to hear about his non binary stuff. He might hate dogs. His community don’t need to hear that

he might love tigers above all othe carnivores but his community don’t need to hear that

his work should be focusing on the needs of all his community , all of them and he should be humble and focused on the work his community needs

he’s an attention seeker

@Poonicorn

'And the non-binary refers to people rejecting male and female stereotypes. So if you are a non-non-binary female (ie a binary female) the assumption is that you must conform to female stereotypes. Part of the reason why gender ideology is so regressive.'

I wouldn't say being non binary is rejecting stereotypes, or that they assume binary people must conform to stereotypes

So....what IS non binary then? What does it mean to declare yourself non binary?

As others have said, there surely must be a tangible difference between that and "non non-binary"? Or what is the point?

Why subscribe to a category if that category has no meaningful definition?

piedbeauty · 02/01/2023 23:12

They don't sound ready to be a vicar. They are far too self-obsessed.

I don't care what sex my minister is; I only care that they can minister to me when needed, and that they can do their job.

WerewolvesAtMidnight · 02/01/2023 22:47

I've never met any phalli in the women's toilets, if there are any they would be inside a cubicle. I give you I would be surprised to meet one in a communal changing room but again I tend to prefer ones with cubicles.

Ooh I've come across more than one on display in the ladies before now. Granted I did work and drink in a city centre pub at the time. And they weren't in the cubicles one delightful male I caught with his penis out peeing in the handbasin of the women's. And no he wasn't drunk and confused he was stone cold sober and did it because he could. He may still have had it on show when I made him get out of the women's as i didn't give him chance to put it away.

Would the church have allowed 'non-binary' people to be priests when they barred women from ordination?

How would that have been decided then?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 02/01/2023 23:04

UWhatNow · 02/01/2023 22:06

This utter ridiculousness actually made me think about whether to cancel my monthly tithe and leave the Church of England… I’m still deciding…

I left when the former archBishop of Canterbury and several other senior priest declared that ‘trans is a sacred journey’ ; so girls cutting off their breasts is a Sacred Journey, is it, Rowan (autocorrect keeps trying to change this to Rowenna, do they know something I don’t?)

But God is not mocked.

@littlbrowndog um yes the priest used to speak at our infant school assemblies every now and again, I was the equivalent of Y2, what's the issue with that?
