I don't really understand why some people spell it 'wheest'. Is that a Central Belt thing? You can't get the right amount of censure into it without a really firm 'SHHH'. IMO.

No, I think (going off the wrong Twitter hashtag) that it's a mis-spelling. I agree that it needs the second h to be said outloud effectively! It has to have real, from your toes, vigour!
