If it's not a charity, are they under any obligation to provide a service for all?

Birdsweepsin · 12/12/2022 10:49

WH: starting with a summary of the Scottish Government gender reform proposals

Suzanne Moore to follow apparently

Just when you think she could be any more amazing 😍

And I bloody loved watching the new Strike last night!

What's the betting a tra will try to get access and make a legal claim ? Hope JKR has that covered .

Luckily, JKR has deep pockets. And the Equality Act exemptions are very clear - though no doubt the Scottish govt will try to change them once it gets the new GRA through.

So, so wonderful. Women only and properly resourced. Thank you JKR. I am so privileged that, when I went through violence, I had a good professional job, resources and friends. So many women haven't. Thank you for this space ❤️

MavisMcMinty · 12/12/2022 10:18

’Someone once said, ‘What would Lord of the Flies be like if it were about girls instead of boys?’

Ooh, that’s a great question!

RethinkingLife · 12/12/2022 10:13

JKR lives philanthropy and her values.

An outstanding role model whom I thought I couldn't admire more and yet I can.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 12/12/2022 10:06

Outstanding

the very, very best of luck to them

ScoldsBridal · 12/12/2022 10:04

JKR putting her marvellous way with words into action. What a woman and what a bloody fantastic team has been assembled. Practical, woman-centred help. Many will benefit. I live in Scotland and would happily make a very modest monthly donation to help fund this and the other centres that must follow. We had to build and fund Womens Shelters in the 70s and we have to do it now.

But for now, I'm just so happy this has happened. It's a massive undertaking and I wish it well.

Dotellhimpike · 12/12/2022 10:04

What an amazing thing to do, and what an incredible team she has working with her. Wonderful news.

Birdsweepsin · 12/12/2022 10:03

Ooh it's going to be discussed on Women's Hour!

Brilliant. Love it. Honoured to be on the same side as JKR

Birdsweepsin · 12/12/2022 09:59

I'm saddened both by the need for her generosity, and knowing that so many, my dds probably included, will just come out with the usual whataboutery claptrap.

Yes but where Jo leads, others will follow. And I think the TRAs will struggle to call this one out.

Nomorechocolateorange · 12/12/2022 09:58

This is amazing news and has really cheered my Monday.

I hope they have a strategy in place for the vile, woman hating TRAs who will inevitably stand outside and protest, I’m sure they will have.

Love you JK!

Boiledbeetle · 12/12/2022 09:50

I was feeling blghhh as it's cold outside and I've got to brave a cold bathroom and a tepid shower before going to the dentist. I am suddenly feeling in a much better mood.

Good on you Jo, you truly are a wonderful woman.

What an extraordinary woman. I'm crying tears of joy at her actions. Her decision to just get on with what is needed, and use her funds to ensure that Beira's Place won't have to kowtow to whatever ideology is current with external funders. The freedom she has granted the organisation is priceless. But I'm saddened both by the need for her generosity, and knowing that so many, my dds probably included, will just come out with the usual whataboutery claptrap. 💐What a woman!!

JKR and the women bravely working there are amazing!
(How the hell did we get to a stage where we have to acknowledge that running a female service requires bravery and going against the 'government'?!)

To your last point - yes - it's beyond belief isn't it

Tricyrtis2022 · 12/12/2022 09:37

Wow, this is amazing! If it's possible, JKR has gone even higher in my estimation.

Birdsweepsin · 12/12/2022 09:37

I can't stop the awe from leaking out of my eyes...

TidyDancer · 12/12/2022 09:32

Oh this is wonderful. JKR is truly a spectacular woman and indeed has ovaries of steel. Amazing read.

Clymene · 12/12/2022 09:32

Oh wow. What a merry Christmas for the survivors of MVAW in Edinburgh

She really is an astonishing woman.

Happylittlechicken · 12/12/2022 09:31

I’m actually crying. And I don’t cry often. This is real feminism. This is what feminism should be, and Nicola Sturgeon should hang her head in shame. If she’s a feminist I’m a dolphin

viques · 12/12/2022 09:30

Can’t stop smiling, so very sorry for the women who need to access Beira’s Place, but so happy that it exists as a safe space for them.

Much love to JKR , what a great Christmas present to her beloved Edinburgh.❤
