It is a heartbreaking account. It has always seemed to me that every trans identifying person who is a parent is denying their child a mum or dad. It is not not fair and will have a detrimental effect. There are many ways in which mums and dads screw up their kids, as Larkin put it poignantly. But this one, to me is so obvious. The day I became a parent my life became about my child. I do not understand anything else as a moral approach. I don't really understand people who don't get that.

Much has been made, too, of her transition from male to femal

If only we could speak the truth.

I don't use the word 'transition' any more when discussing this subject, for that reason.

ScrollingLeaves · 10/12/2022 20:25

Thank you for posting that.

Can feel Suki's pain and confusion. How sad that she had such a selfish narcissistic father.

Charley50 · 10/12/2022 20:23

How painful for Suki, who writes so well and insightfully. He sounds like a complete bellend. Glad she is able to shed some light on his treatment of her and her mum. It must be tough hearing him so celebrated.

God, Jan Morris sounds like a horrible horrible narcissistic person. Poor Suki.

That is an interesting piece, in that it conforms what we all expected.

Thank you for sharing

That is a very well-written piece. Eloquent, honest, and moving. It makes me want to respond directly to the author; always the sign of a fine work that reveals emotional truth.

'She was always talked about, always put on some pedestal. Her ego was massive, with people constantly rubbing it. She was a woman who enjoyed being in a man’s world because she stood out. I can’t blame her for that, but Jan certainly did absolutely nothing for womankind'

guinnessguzzler · 10/12/2022 19:59

Wow. Well done to Suki for doing such an incredible job sharing this painful story, it can't have been easy.

Sorry I’ve just seen there’s a thread from October this could have gone in:

That is all I was told. Whenever I called “Daddy”, there would be no answer, and slowly the word was lost from my repertoire.

This is so sad. Sounds like a slow, unexplained bereavement.

That was the part that struck me too Arabella.

Her whole existence seemed to be as the 'invisible child' in the family, and then that strange loss totally unacknowledged too.

I'm so glad that she has finally had her voice heard.

It's like those interviews with the children of transitioned father's that are on youtube- I can't remember where? WDI maybe?

Heartbreaking.

lanadelgrey · 10/12/2022 19:51

Would love to hear her interviewed on Woman’s Hour as opening to wider discussion of trans widows and children

Jan must have been insufferable to live with; cruel and bullying to their only (surviving) daughter, while elevating the position of the sons. Jan had no sense of what it was like to experience life as a woman and clearly had no respect for the female sex. I’m pleased Suki has been able to tell of her experiences as Jan’s daughter.

DrBlackbird · 10/12/2022 19:48

slowly the word was lost from my repertoire

What other word could that description apply to? Hmm

LizzieSiddal · 10/12/2022 19:43

Poor Suki. How cruel her father was towards her.

HermioneWeasley · 10/12/2022 19:42

I am also shocked to hear that a male who thinks womanhood is a costume, turns out to be sexist. And a narcissist.

I’m glad Suki has had a chance to have her say

Pudmyboy · 10/12/2022 19:42

Powerful stuff. I am glad it's in the same paper that published Jan's memoir: somehow bookends it. Does anyone think it will get a reprint in the Pink News?

TinFoilHatty · 10/12/2022 19:40

The pain is so evident, poor Suki. I am sorry your father was so relentlessly cruel and very much unkind.

RoyalCorgi · 10/12/2022 19:40

That's quite something, isn't it? The family have been very quiet all this time, and have stood by Morris publicly. And yet all the time there was this huge sadness and bitterness about Morris's cruelty to their own children - not to mention the appalling sexism. How hard it must have been for Suki growing up with that.

TidyDancer · 10/12/2022 19:40

What a truly dreadful man he was. That poor family.

ResisterRex · 10/12/2022 19:35

It's like we've been lied to all this time.
