This is an experimental thread, all input much appreciated!

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Right, bring on the flames or flowers! <cowers>

Re last night. I was quite upset to see himself being told it will all be okay on the lifeboat thread, partly because of his refusal to just listen here but even more so because of how he represented it on the lifeboat thread, the whole pontification thing. Seriously, fuck that shit. It was beyond disrespectful and it was sly. "Hey, laydeez, poor old me needs to go away because the laydeez who know less than me won't listen but I reckon if I get a bit poor old me here enough of you will sing Please Don't Go and then I'll feel justified."

I'll acknowledge a certain negativity in that he wasn't an ally way back when and last night was proof to me that he still isn't. I'd use the whole wolf in sheep's clothing thing but I love wolves so that doesn't work for me.

SOME OF US HUV REAL FINGERTIPS TOO

WagnersFourthSymphony · 07/12/2022 14:38

@MissLawls
think of the feminism thread on that board as the equivalent of the Women's Institute, The Fawcett Society, The Women's Equality Party and think of OUR thread as Sex Matters, Fair Play For Women and Standing For Women.

Ah, so it was like Nicola 'feminist to my fingertips' Sturgeon? 😏

Here we are reality based feminists (thanks, Hadley Freeman). 🙂

MissLawls · 07/12/2022 14:17

Well, in reality there were two threads. The thread for the kind of feminism where transwomen are women, sex work is real work and you shouldn't harass women but also boys get harassed etc, and the sex based rights thread, which we were all on and which was by far the more controversial.

For those unfamiliar with the board we left after being told we were bigots and that because of us the board would be closed because our very existence even on just one thread which many didn't bother to read made them feel unsafe... think of the feminism thread on that board as the equivalent of the Women's Institute, The Fawcett Society, The Women's Equality Party and think of OUR thread as Sex Matters, Fair Play For Women and Standing For Women.

Hah yes, you're all right!

I kind of miss the OJ thread, but not enough to go back.

Tricyrtis2022 · 07/12/2022 13:46

Kuc, yes there was the Feminism thread but I tend to discount it because it was so toothless and didn't get posted on much compared to the FWR Thread of Hate.

StephanieSuperpowers · 07/12/2022 13:44

Britinme · 07/12/2022 13:44

The "Owen Jones is a bit of a dick" thread had some promise though.

Kucingsparkles · 07/12/2022 13:43

Tricyrtis2022 · 07/12/2022 13:34

No, not really. We'd be directed back to

> That Thread

To be fair, there was a "Feminism" thread which would tolerate discussion of really indisputable female issues, e.g. everybody could agree to be horrified by the murder of Sarah Everard and then all would express disgust at male violence and policemen pretending to be harmless. But that thread never allowed any joining-of-the-dots-of-common-recurring-themes - that was Very Bad, you see.

Which is one reason why I wanted to start a general thread here in FWR, because I keep seeing the same few themes over and over, and how they connect up into the bigger picture that we might call The Patriarchy.

Were you allowed to discuss some feminist issues in other threads not just your 'naughty step'?

No, not really. We'd be directed back to

Were you allowed to discuss some feminist issues in other threads not just your 'naughty step'?

Helleofabore · 07/12/2022 13:30

ExiledElsie

Can I please ask, what feminist issues were discussed on your previous forum thread? General feminist issues?

ErrolTheDragon · 07/12/2022 13:12

I'm not sure why some of the sexist men decided to follow us here.

Could be they wanted a less constrained discussion? In which case hopefully they won't complain if that's what they get. Or could be (to quote the OPs post again) because they're people who think they're ever so Progressive and on The Right Side of History (but who) see women not as proper people, but partially-sentient support bipeds for servicing the desires of the real people (i.e. men).

Helleofabore · 07/12/2022 13:06

Fair... not far... sorry.

Helleofabore · 07/12/2022 13:06

Far enough Exiled.

ExiledElsie · 07/12/2022 13:02

So, are we expected to make accommodations for this poster?

No, nope and no again. I was pretty surprised to see the fawning reactions on the lifeboat thread.

We suggested mumsnet for our lifeboat because we weren't allowed to discuss sex and gender issues as women. The most active of us had already been here for years. I'm not sure why some of the sexist men decided to follow us here.

Helleofabore · 07/12/2022 12:58

Great. Because I have noticed from the ending of the last 'sex and gender' thread that there was some pretty strong 'they don't like males' and 'there's bullies' vibes coming through.

I wasn't surprised that last night has been framed around just that narrative by some posters.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/12/2022 12:56

Yep. One can't mark out a thread as 'free of feminism' on this board. Feminism is going to get done to anyone who posts on here, like it or not.

Grin particularly one explicitly labelled 'women's rights'. Inevitably that may include quite a bit of 'and men's wrongs' but fgs chaps, enter into the discussion if relevant but don't perpetuate those wrongs here.

Plasticfreefantastic · 07/12/2022 12:55

I totally agree with no accommodations. And as I've already said ineloquently upthread, it would be good if the poster concerned showed real feminist credentials and engaged with the points being made by female posters; I just saw the same thing being said over and over, and no consideration given to the points being made about the reasons they might want to rethink it.

I don't want to sound like I think there should just be one point of view expressed on any of these threads, but I think it's equally important to listen to challenge and meet it if you feel strongly the point that's being made is wrong, rather than just grey wall it.

StephanieSuperpowers · 07/12/2022 12:55

I also want to ask, are we expected to make accommodations for this poster?

I don't think so. Anyone can say anything and deal with a frank exchange of views. None of us are children, we're all grown adults. These are hard discussions that can cut to the heart of what we believe about society, other people and ourselves. If you can't take some robust words, it's probably up to each poster to choose whether to give their opinions.

ArabellaScott · 07/12/2022 12:55

Feminism's a verb, imo. Smile

Helleofabore · 07/12/2022 12:53

Should any accommodations be made for posters on any thread on this board? (except for threads that are for Transwidows which is a very clear exception)

And again, I want to continue to point out that there are male posters who are regulars on this board and have been for years who would not dream of the misogynistic posts that were posted here last night. This is absolutely not about 'male' posters. This is about misogynists and women and girl's bodies being exploited.

Kucingsparkles · 07/12/2022 12:52

Feminism is going to get done to anyone who posts on here, like it or not.

I love this Grin

I'd agree with no accommodations for anybody (on this thread). The beauty and joy of FWR for me is that we women can bare our teeth, here we're the default people, and men have to fit in. It rather alarmed me back when I started lurking many years ago, until I realised how freeing it is compared to so many other spaces.
