SG took leave during the LGBA court case that Mermaids initiated. Was a decision made that she was not going to be a witness? Was she not needed to brief her colleagues? After all she is the one, if anyone, who would know the detail.

There must be a back story around the decision to take the Charity Commission to court. It would be very interesting to know how this shit show happened. SG carrying the can. SG leaving?

Just noticed the resignation was covered by the Mail, and Times:

"Salivating" at the thought of doing irreversible harm to children? Dr Mengele much?

I always wondered about the designated safeguarding lead. My assumption was probably not Susie but named lead not on policy or someone who left (policy not updated).

A lot of charities get generic policy and procedures documents from great places like CVS but don’t bother to read them or understand them.

Bet Mermaids got theirs from Stonewall.

Yes Beware. BEAT eating disorders page linked below is what rigorous policies look like from an ethical charity that supports children. This has links to their safeguarding policy and others. Their guidelines for forum usage are rigorous and designed to support (not exploit) children.
Safeguarding should be the priority for every organisation.. Not something that comes second to the political demands of adults:

Thx @DaughterOfPsychiatrist .
If these drugs were not approved/not available for this use in Britain, is this an ok thing to do??
One would think that someone should be investigating. After all, the damage that these drugs do is not a minor matter...

Dr Norman Spack, who was 'salivating' when he first came across the idea of experimenting on children with hormone treatment.

One of the first and biggest hormone programs for young teenagers in the United States is led by a Harvard-affiliated pediatric endocrinologist, Dr. Norman Spack, at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Spack recalled being at a meeting in Europe about 15 years ago, when he learned that the Dutch were using puberty blockers in transgender early adolescents.

“I was salivating,” he recalled. “I said we had to do this.”

But but SG took her daughter abroad. So the FGM laws should apply. Unless of course the FGM laws apply specifically to biological sex. And not gender. Do they even have provision for DSDs?

Can one identify into being a girl while simultaneously not be identifying into having FGM laws applied? It’s all very confusing.

The FGM legislation refers specifically to the relevant body parts. Clitoris, labia menora and labia majora.

What about the puberty blockers that this child was given? Where did they come from? Which doctor prescribed them, if any??
Was this legal?
So many questions.

Right. The Guardian knows what's coming. This article and Amelia Gentleman's article a couple of days ago. It's clearly preparing for a massive reverse ferret.

My money's on the Charity Commission being about to launch a statutory inquiry into Mermaids, on safeguarding grounds - the Guardian article said statutory inquiries were relatively rare, with only 45 last year.

If the NHS are finally definitely banning staff from linking to them as well, it seems pretty likely that the news is out about safeguarding concerns.

Criminal charges for serious safeguarding failures are looking increasing likely.

And/or it could be the LGBA judgement being imminent - and damning for Mermaids.

Either way, great to hear SG is gone - can't wait to hear Emma Watson's and Jameela Jamil's continued words of support for her. Because of course they'd never drop her like hot coals the millisecond it became apparent the cause was no longer fashionable, would they?

But JJ and EW will simply say the CC are transphobic; and SG left because of the Terven.

Same old, same old.

They wouldn't publicly denounce Mermaids or SG with a gun to their head.

Well that's just a headfuck.

Yes. Ruth Hunt is still active.

Of course there's always Scotland closer to home. A move across the border and she could be an MSP in a year or two. Fit right in with the SNP or Greens.

Aw, come on, we've got enough problems up here as it is!

Yikes. Mind you, Ruth Hunt ended up in the House of Lords after all the damage she caused.

The trouble is that FGM laws apply to girls, not boys. Extraordinary as it may seem, it appears not to be illegal to take your son abroad to have his genitals removed.

Not sure they would have the amount of funds available for a worthwhile pay off though?

Mermaids had best part of £1 million in the bank in March 2021, although suspect they will have burnt through some of those reserves.

DH (familiar with the process) also thinks that the Mermaids statement has negotiated settlement written all over it.

Susie has three other children (Jackie is the oldest) and a mother in Leeds, so I’m not sure a job in the US would be that appealing? Perhaps as a last resort, but definitely not a planned career trajectory.

I tend to agree. She relocated Mermaids from London to Leeds presumably to avoid a move. Starting afresh in another country where the culture difference is massive can be hard going when you're young never mind someone of SG's age.

Not impossible of course but it's not the same as a holiday or business trip. Then there's all the visa issues, she'd need secure employment and sponsorship.

I think she may pop up overseas but perhaps as a freelance speaker/consultant. Plenty of money but no upheaval of moving. I'd like to think of course she's too tarnished for even the US and Canada but sadly I doubt it.

IMy experience of working with schools where there've been safeguarding "disasters" is that it's institutional failures that enable abuse. Poor leadership, lack of effective policies & practice, excessive secrecy, staff intimidated & scared to report or whistleblow - a poor communication culture where children and adults know that their views are not respected or listened to.
Very occasionally there's an individual predator who's ducked the system but (in my experience) that's rare. These people are normally enabled and empowered by closed minded & careless management.

BreadInCaptivity · 26/11/2022 17:51

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/11/2022 17:09

Not least because I find it hard to imagine worse failures of safeguarding than those already brought to light, to be honest.

I know what you mean, but every time I think I can't be shocked any more, something invariably happens that proves me wrong.

Tbh there is certainly already enough in the public domain for the Trustees to ask SG to resign.

However, I think the mass deletion of tweets by JG is significant. It's not something that would protect SG from the issues already raised. Rather it smacks of something preemptive re: evidence of behaviour/attitudes/statements that are suddenly at best inconvenient or at worst damning and I doubt the two incidents are not connected.

It's common practise in schools and should be in all organisations
