Suffragette Lanyard

I have just taken delivery of my suffragette lanyard, ordered after seeing one mentioned on the suffragette scarf on here . I have no idea whether anyone at work will so much as notice, let alone accuse me of being a hateful bigot for wearing it, but anything seems possible in these crazy times. So am wondering what approach to take if asked about it.

  1. "It's purple and green. I like purple and green" <innocent smile>

  2. "It's suffragette colours. I'm an ardent feminist and enthusiastically wearing the colours of the brave women who fought for our rights. What do you mean anti-trans? I know of no such thing. It's pro-women, that's not anti-trans." <Innocent smile>

I'm more inclined towards 2 - but feel like if it does somehow cause unbearable trauma then admitting it's intended to make a statement is more likely to result in me being asked to refrain from wearing it, which I would potentially escalate (as I'd tell them to feck off)

Which do you think is the best approach?

I have a suffragette face mask that I got to vote in during covid. It has Votes for Women written in huge letters across it.

I wore it a lot and never had a comment that wasn't positive.

Oh which one did you go for!

my (gay) sister was so happy a few years back when her company got rainbow lanyards (back when it was LGB). When I enlightened her about the cotton ceiling a few years later, it wasn’t pretty.

I have this, and it's really nice. Thinking of replacing the metal with sterling silver but don't want to ruin it. Anyone have any ideas how they are made?

There's a how-to vid here - and attaching the findings is covered from about 19 minutes.

I think you're really brave. We have to wear a company logo'd lanyard but I don't think I'd be brave enough to get a suffragette one if I had a choice. I do have a ring but it's not very noticeable. I'm eying up that necklace linked further up - that would be a lovely Xmas present...

We are supposed to wear coloured work ones too but I just put mine in and said ‘I hope you don’t mind…’

I quite like this necklace

Etsy has a lot in suffragette colours, including dinosaur pin badges

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/11/2022 21:05

If you get aggro, you can always innocently ask them why they have a problem with the genderqueer flag Wink

KittenKong · 20/11/2022 20:04

My lanyard predates all this nonsense. I have been a feminist since I was a school kid in the 80s. Why should I hide and pretend?

This is just a progression of the worst misogyny I have witnessed in my lifetime.

MangyInseam · 20/11/2022 20:02

I know it's tempting to want to oppose the rainbow crowd, but a huge part of the issue is how inappropriate the political lanyard of any kind is in a workplace that should be serving all people with no element of political ideologies involved.

KittenKong · 20/11/2022 19:56

David Lamy started it.

Itisbetter · 20/11/2022 19:54

suffragette dinosaurs 🤣🤣🤣. It’ll be unicorns next.

KittenKong · 20/11/2022 19:38

I have a ether snazzy cardigan with dinosaur buttons. And a dress with a lovely leafy pattern (but when you look it’s for dinos peering out). People always compliment me on them!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 20/11/2022 18:41

There's no way I could wear a sufragette lanyard.

I've been considering some cheap dinosaur earrings, if I can find some in silver purple and green. As a subtle nod to anyone else who would understand them.

I did see some dinosaurs with rainbow colours which I thought could be pleasingly ironic

Loveacuppa · 20/11/2022 18:16

I agree - get the coat.
I never bought a Brora Phenomenal Woman scarf when they were out (largely because I couldn't afford it), and yet have wished ever since that I had just bought it anyway.
Get it and don't regret.

I found a second-hand purple, off white and green Missoni coat online. I can't decide whether to go for it or not (due to price - and cupboard space), but then if I don't get it, I'll regret it! Even if I'm never brave enough to wear it (might be like wearing a target in your back and front!).

Get it anyway! Missoni is lovely and the colours/patterns are amazing.

LizBuin · 20/11/2022 17:02

I've got some Dinny Hall 'Suffragette' earrings, not cheap but currently 25% off.

Oh I love those!

I wear a Unite lanyard - it’s a political statement too. Lots of causes (political and otherwise) shown by lanyards - why should we feel we have no right to wear these colours?

rabbitwoman · 20/11/2022 14:42

I wear a Ravenclaw lanyard.

Dinosaur necklace sometimes.

Other people are resplendent in pride pins (with the trans inclusion chevron) and we have Stonewall posters everywhere.....

I work in a skool......

I think I would like something suffragette, maybe for next training day. And if anyone says it's anti trans, I might point out that trans women always had the vote.....

SirChenjins · 19/11/2022 11:28

I absolutely agree @twelly

I feel so annoyed that people feel that they are wary about wearing suffragette lanyards at work - when other wear rainbow etc lanyards. If a company insisted everyone wore the corporate lanyard then fair enough that is rule - black or green or whatever logo. It is the hypocrisy that annoys me

This. Either everyone brings their whole selves and politics to work, and the righteous will have to figure out that tolerance is a Thing, or we go back to behaving like grown ups and no one does, and we keep politics and religion out of the workplace. Particularly when delivering a service that has to be impartial and not selective on whether or not the service user is sufficiently compatible with the service deliverer's personal hobby horses.
