Posts like this make me terrified for my teen dd. She hasn't settled on a sexuality yet (she says) and wears very gender neutral clothes. She already gets stared at by typical presenting women and girls in public toilets and ladies changing rooms. Luckily kids her are are much more accepting than adult women, but attitudes are still isolating and cause her massive mental health issues.

Females have been wearing gender neutral clothing for decades. This isn’t anything new.
Many high streets and you find females wearing jeans, T-shirts/jumpers/hoodies and trainers.

TheKeatingFive · 16/11/2022 08:44

The issue with this area is that it's very complex.

There are a quite few charities operating in the sector who have demonstrated safeguarding failures or aren't engaging with problems arising from medical and social transitioning.

These areas need urgent investigation. But instead, we have organisations and individuals falling over to demonstrate how progressive they are and firing money at them. Beautifully demonstrated by this thread. 🙄

We need to take a step back and assess all of this carefully and objectively. Failure to do this is failing these children.

Many of the posters on here 'might also like' the threads recommended below!

Reading the link as I hope people will do you'll see it's a bit more complex than you make it sound.

In my experience of young people struggling with gender identity, in every case it's a current culture-driven coping strategy to deal with all the other issues they have - exoerience of racism, undiagnosed or diagnosed neurodiversity, trauma, general 'not fitting in', mental health difficulties of various types.

More support for children and young people suffering in those ways is welcome. If it has to come in a gender envelope, then in a way I'm sorry about that but it is also the current cultural expression of these issues and meets the children where they are.

If it's about Neurodiversity or racism or parental abandonment then do that. LGBT teens are still welcome, why the need to focus on a small group in that case?

That's my opinion, it excludes people who aren't LGBT who need the help just d as much, for the sake of image- saying 'look how we're helping LGBT teens' whilst others are missing out.

Not sure that's what The original post is getting at, but my time.

ZenNudist · 16/11/2022 08:35

I think its fair enough to support the charities where you agree with what they do and no need to support those that you don't agree with. It's not mean sprited if your money is going to help other causes. It's not refusing to help children it is refusing to support causes that do more harm than good. I'd rather help the homeless, struggling families, elderly people in poverty, people in genuine and immediate need plus overseas aid to those hit by all manner of man made and natural disasters. Am I mean spirited?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 16/11/2022 08:35

The issue isn't if they are supporting charities for young people trying to navigate their way through the current gender identity landscape. This issue is which charities they are supporting to help them do it.

The treatment of the Glasgow Rape Crisis mentioned by a PP concerns me. Any further funding to Mermaids whilst the CC is looking in to them would concern me.

@ofwarren

There is such a thing as a child with gender dysphoria. Age 6 Dp's relative announced they were a boy, this was 20 years ago long before the popular media discussed trans in any meaningful way.

If you haven't experienced it yourself this doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It's rare but there are cases

Where did I say gender dysphoria doesn't exist?
The mental health of these children should be supported, but not via charities that push gender ideology.
It's impossible to change sex and cruel to tell these children otherwise.

Bovrilly · 16/11/2022 08:16

Well this is a pretty mean-spirited thread, even by MN standards... refusing to help children who are struggling because they are not struggling with the correct problems. Of course everyone is within their rights only to support straight people but I am surprised how many are ok with admitting that. Like a PP I never normally donate but will do this year.

This is a silly response. There is lots of appetite for actually helping. People are trying to protect children from damaging pseudo-help. Which is more damaging than doing nothing. Any charity which gives money to mermaids is choosing to be oblivious to the harm it's doing to children. It's pretty mean spirited to make things much worse for some of our most vulnerable children.

endofthelinefinally · 16/11/2022 08:22

I choose the charities I support very carefully. I don't trust the BBC or some of the dubious lobby groups they support. I don't think schools should be jumping on this expensive bandwagon. Their purpose is to educate children. Not pile more stress onto parents.

If you google mermaids and children in need (they have funded mermaids as well as currently funding gendered intelligence, you eventually get to an MN thread about this - Glasgow rape crisis being forced to close their waiting list after CIN withdrew funding because they don't provide support to men and boys.

The link is about supporting children finding life difficult. There's zero about medicalisation.

Why do they give money to mermaids then?

@flamingogold cin fund project workers not overheads. I've been in receipt of funding, I know how it works

I stopped supporting CIN years ago because of this sort of shit

I'm not a big supporter of CIN but on the back of this thread I'll be making a donation.

Ooh edgy!

Literally no woman of any age, gives a shit how she dresses. Absolutely ridiculous to suggest younger people are more accepting when they’re trying to trans anyone who doesn’t conform to stereotypes.

More actual support is very welcome but medicalising them and entrenching horribly stereotypical views of men and woman whilst modelling aggressive responses to attempts to question whether these ideas have any basis in reality is actively harmful to those vulnerable children - and it's what is dressed up as 'support' nowadays.

lightand · 16/11/2022 07:56

Given up giving to "national" charities.

Support local ones. They are often more in need anyway[forgive the pun]

Quisto · 16/11/2022 07:56

A quick Google says that they give money to Gendered Intelligence. The people who trained Stonewall in all things Transgender, in 2015.
