Transgender Day of Remembrance

Employer is hosting a vigil to mark the above to honour those "who have lost their lives, live with abuse and discrimination or simply have to hide who they really are simply because they are trans."

Didn't think we were that far gone, not much take up on email pronouns etc...

Maybe there will be a big chunky knitting pattern for one poorbuthappy. Just wait and see.

poorbuthappy · 10/11/2022 13:07

Christ a rainbow poppy is coming isn't it.

ReunitedThorns · 10/11/2022 13:06

I would ask that if they find the day so important people should be given paid time off of work to remember those individuals.

DornChorus · 10/11/2022 13:02

At least it'll be short.

When is it? Poor show to announce it this week when people gather to remember those killed in wars and those who sacrificed their lives to ensure the freedom of others.

The "Day of Remembrance" is apparently 20 November, the vigil is 18 November.

Do we have vigils for those who have lost their lives, live with abuse and discrimination for other reasons, or just the trans community?

Ask them when the vigil is for all the women who have died due to male violence.

So they've had to change the meaning of 'remembrance' now because TW aren't an at risk group being murdered weekly here like women and girls.

Yes, it does very much seem as though they're trying to shoe-horn the TR agenda into this 'Day'.

How does it vary from “Transgender day of visibility”?

For an oppressed and marginalised group they don’t half seem to have quite a lot of commemorative events.

"oh I'd like to hear more about the stories of the people whose lives we are remembering. How many have died in the uk? It's awful isn't it? Were they murdered? Dreadful right-wing press means I've never seen these human stories before"

Transwoman Amy Griffith's was murdered in England in 2019. It was widely reported in national and local media. Possibly less widely reported was the judge's statement that there was no suggestion that the murder was aggravated by hostility towards the deceased because of her transgender identity.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 10/11/2022 12:35

A vigil? How incredibly dramatic

I assume attendance is optional and you don't have to attend

Not in the UK btw.... It was American so not sure how widely the 'day' is known about in the UK.

Worth mentioning that the vigil has been arranged by a TW in the LBGT++++ society.

*It was in America

It's also the interpretation of 'remembrance' that I find concerning here. People hiding who they are, facing abuse & discrimination don't usually have 'remembrance' applied to them, as it does rather imply that they are dead. And, as we know, being trans etc in western Europe is actually very safe.

A hell of a lot safer than being a mere woman.

It's especially insulting at this time of year when we do remember those who have died in conflicts.

Yes, that was my first thought.

Apparently "Transgender Day of Remembrance" is an official day in recognition of the murder of a TW called Rita Hester in Nov 1998.

But I still think it's quite crass and deliberate to tie the name of the day in with 'Remembrance'.

Sorry, it was me that wrote ‘remembrance’, OP wrote ‘honour’ - but yes, somehow don’t think the timing is a coincidence

You should ask for details of those you are remembering - I seem to remember seeing something about this last year - the actual number (or perhaps the knowledge of those organising the event)was rather illuminating

ArabellaScott · 10/11/2022 11:40

A vigil. Crikey. Take a flask and picnic blanket, is my advice.
