Most Albanian asylum seekers granted UK visas are trafficked women

Analysis from the Oxford Migration Observatory reveals that 86 per cent of Albanians who received positive decisions on asylum applications in the year ending June 2022 were women, whose leave to remain was granted on the basis that they were likely to have been trafficked and in genuine need of protection.

Just wanted to post this as the main stream media and the politicians are just whipping up hysteria by not reporting statistical facts.

But then its only women so who cares. :(

I have seen this statistic repeated a few times but as pp have also said it’s still the case the people arriving on boats are mostly male.

Sausagenbacon · 03/11/2022 07:20

We have a very large number of male Albanians entering illegally
And
Those Albanians who are allowed to stay are largely women.
Separate pieces of information that aren't difficult to understand IMO. And rather different from how you presented it OP.

*It is scandalous and will poison public opinion.

Poison public opinion against what? Or in what way?*

That they are poor vulnerable men escaping torture. The pictures of them on the coaches beaming and giving thumbs up to the cameras as they are driven to their luxury hotels is laughable. People are so naïve. £7 million a day that should be helping us.

Trash the assumption that all immigrants are revered health professionals?

I work in the justice system and the Modern Slavery act may need to be modified or even pulled. It had far too many loopholes that are being exploited by ruthless operators.

We see drug dealers and criminals in court from European countries - we have to offer them bail - they then disappear and return to the U.K. with a new identity and passport and carry on as before.
As a starting point we need to consider ID cards with enhanced. security measures similar to scanning facial passports at the airports. We urgently need to tighten the security in this country. The public would be horrified if they knew what was actually going on. Beside the people trafficking, drug rackets, thriving stolen car operations and fraud on an industrial scale with laws that were meant to protect the truly vulnerable being obscenely abused. It is scandalous and will poison public opinion.

When you say the public would be horrified if they knew what was going on, what is actually going on? And if it's so bad, why isn't it stopped?

I'm sorry I have no idea about this, and would very much like to learn, being on the side of exploited women and children in whatever guise.

Who is trafficking all these people in the UK? It says the highest proportion of trafficked people are British nationals, does anyone know where are the gangs doing the trafficking from?

It makes me so cross that students and other young people bang on about how bad historic slavery was and topple statues and get buildings and streets renamed, but don't seem to give a flying fuck about the current modern slavery happening right under their noses. I wish they'd protest about that.

I think if the human trafficking involves British nationals, then it is related to county lines and the rape gangs. People are trafficked from one town.county to another.

ReunitedThorns · 02/11/2022 23:06

86% or asylum applications accepted are Albanian women. So far 1% of the male population of Albania has attempted to claim asylum. They're not contradictory numbers as those applications are neither accepted or declined yet, so are not related to the number of accepted applications.

The Albanian male is a recent trend (mainly this year I think) and asylum applications can take a few years to process.

FemaleAndLearning · 02/11/2022 22:53

When the sex trafficked women get their asylum here where do they go, what support do they get. Do the people trafficking them follow them and enslave them anyway? What is the follow up?

Kissingfrogs25 · 02/11/2022 19:06

Albania is a safe country with a sophisticated westernised society.
No Albanians should be seeking asylum here. They should be signposted home and offered protection with their own DV charities and agencies. Offered new identities and protection in the same way we deal with victims here. I am sorry to say but Albanian women may be at risk of further exploitation if offered asylum here, they then become more valuable to the traffickers.

lollipoprainbow · 02/11/2022 18:50

@Kissingfrogs25 not surprised at all. When will people wake up to what is going on???

WhatPumpkin · 02/11/2022 18:48

Two hotels near where I live are now housing refugees/migrants, they will be at full capacity soon, 500 men. One of the hotels was housing refugee families for quite a while, absolutely no problems whatsoever. I assume they have now been found housing more suitable for families. They had been working for the British military and were evacuated out of as at serious risk from being executed.

My issue now is it’s all single males, not families, not women anymore and after only two weeks there have been women harassed already with reports of two sexual assaults. Myself and other local women see the area around those hotels as somewhere to avoid now.

Huge amounts of men without women have been an issue throughout history.

bellac I mentioned two completely different things in my post, I didn't mean to conflate the two. Apologies for confusion.

I wondered where the traffickers are from. Are they British gangs? Are they other nationalities?

How many of you do gooders posting here have been affected by mass immigration genuine question ??

Very few I would think. Those who are the least likely to be affected are the ones shouting loudest for anyone who wants to come can come and be housed and fed. Yes I'm talking to you Lily Allen, Gary Lineker, Banksy et al
If the Albanian government need to get to grips with their trafficking gangs instead of leaving other countries to deal with it

Wonnle · 02/11/2022 18:09

What I don't get is why they try to get to the UK rather than other European countries

I don’t think when you get trafficked you get passed a holiday brochure, and your traffickers let you pick out a destination.

And anyway, why do you think the UK should be immune from helping asylum seekers? There’s already countries that do far more.

This is just going to turn into that other thread on asylum seekers isn’t it…

There are lots of different contexts here that people may not necessarily understand

For example, if you're working with a teenager and he keeps going missing, mum reports to the police when he is missing but no one really knows where he is, he comes back the following day, then goes again. Mum and school are worried he is involved in gangs or county lines, perhaps he is, perhaps he isnt, there isnt evidence of it and he denies it

Over time time you start worrying that he has clothing on him that mum didnt buy and he hasnt got the money to buy, he starts missing school more. Always staying out late and wont say who his friends are

Part of the safeguarding and risk management of the situation (along with various forms of intervention and direct work) is a NRM referral and it will often come back to say that he is a victim of modern slavery and is being trafficked. Some areas have NRM workers assigned once that occurs, others dont have the resources

So its not the usual understanding of what slavery is.

Discovereads · 02/11/2022 18:36

@IwantToRetire
presumably those failing the asylum claims are the economic migrants who dont qualify

We cannot presume any such thing because of the rampant inhumanity within the Home Office. Read Sara’s story then tell me economic migrant, or asylum seeker?

I’m terrified to go back’: Albanian sex trafficking victim tells of despair as Home Office rejects asylum claim

“Sara* was training to be a lawyer when she was trafficked from Albania and enslaved for sexual exploitation. A year after escaping her captors, she has been denied asylum in the UK. She tells The Independent about her ordeal and why the idea of going back fills her with dread.”
“I was sold as a debt. I wished I was dead,” says Sara*, an Albanian woman in her twenties. “When I came here it was a relief, but I’m terrified to go back. I’m scared I’ll go through the same thing.”

There seems to be a disconnect between two figures being repeated across media

One is the figure in your op re the 86% and the other is this

‘Last week at a home affairs select committee hearing, the small boats commander Dan O’Mahoney described an “exponential” rise in small boat arrivals from Albania, with more than 12,000 people this year, including 10,000 single men.’

Both in this article

apple.news/Ad5iBE1X_QfSmWHg86J5tjA

The boats are mostly carrying males atm but that doesn’t mean they have been granted asylum to the extent women have or will be, as they tend not to stay in the hotel for the process.

So the current situation is re males as they are a higher proportion which is not inaccurate.

IwantToRetire · 02/11/2022 18:29

For those who want to talk about modern slavery there are statistics in a Salvation Army report

Figures for modern slavery by gender (ie sex) and type of exploitation
www.salvationarmy.org.uk/sites/default/files/resources/2022-10/SA%20Modern%20Slavery%20Report%202022%20FINAL.pdf

Figures for modern slavery by nationality www.salvationarmy.org.uk/sites/default/files/resources/2022-10/SA%20Modern%20Slavery%20Report%202022%20FINAL.pdf

But presumably like illegal migrants these figures only reflect those identified and dont reflect those still caught in this exploitaiton.

It isn’t just as sex workers, domestic workers , car washes etc all see many trafficked people
