“I want to get this conversation off Twitter, I want to stop debating people’s lives”

I bet you do mate. Not going your way at the moment is it.

All he can want whatever he likes. Doesn’t mean he’s going to get it.

#nodebate is so over.

Excellent letter from Sex Matters. Straight to the point; they don't fuck around 💪🏼💪🏽😍

Pixiedust1234 · 30/10/2022 22:05

I thought I had misheard him originally but reading it on the link he really did say "I believe in a big tent". What the heck does that mean?

FOJN · 30/10/2022 22:00

"Debating people's lives"

He's got his constructive dialogue off to a good start with this little gem.

Fuck off Iain.

RhannionKPSS · 30/10/2022 21:44

I wouldn’t trust Iain as far as I could throw him. After the Nolan series on Stonewall exposed their appalling behaviour it should have been shut down, and it still should. What Stonewall have done to women’s rights & children is unforgivable. LGB Alliance would do well to keep well away from them.

RhannionKPSS · 30/10/2022 21:40

Iain doesn’t like the sunlight pouring in on Stonewall , Crispin Blunt and all the other dealings going on in private. Too late the time of no debate is over, women won’t wheesht about safety, privacy, dignity and safeguarding children.

Ohyoudodoyou · 30/10/2022 21:37

Those replies are pretty scathing but with some very valid points.
He won't answer respond to them though. We've seen this before.
Be great if he did a q and a on here, hey?

Sex Matters has written to Stonewall:

Also, this is a good point about blocking people:

twitter.com/jo_bartosch/status/1586807263884460034?s=46&t=zkVul54kivilU7h5Obre1g

Do they stand by this action?

I also think people involved in charities shouldn't be anonymous:

www.stonewall.org.uk/trans-advisory-group

"MEMBERS OF THE GROUP WERE APPOINTED FOLLOWING AN EXTENSIVE APPLICATION AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS. PLEASE NOTE, SOME MEMBERS OF THE GROUP HAVE ELECTED TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS, SO HAVE NOT BEEN INCLUDED ON THIS LIST. "

What do they influence who do they have contact with?

Such a lot of questions

Stonewall were quick to appoint Aimee Challenor to that trans advisory group when the paedophile scandal involving them emerged from the Green Party. That was when I understood how dangerous Stonewall had the potential to be to children. They "advised" schools yet openly appointed someone with that history.

OhHolyJesus · 30/10/2022 20:00

“I want to get this conversation off Twitter"

no debate didn't work* and now Musk is readmitting previously banned GC accounts we are sure to lose even worse than before*

"I want to stop debating people’s lives."

It's not women's lives he's talking about it is?

Bit late Iain, it's just a bit too late ...and if the lives of the people you don't wish to 'debate' require the lives of all people, including children, to bow down to an ideology built on sand in their thoughts, words and actions then quite honestly you'd be best of sticking to Twitter as it doesn't work in the real world.**

"I want to stop debating people’s lives”
is very different from
"we should debate what's best for the lives of people with very complex issues"
Debating what's the best course of action to ensure the best outcome for people with complex issues is the only way to arrive at the best course of action for those people. But religion doesn't accept any challenge to the orthodox view, because that would challenge the power and position of the high priests. This is not about what's best for trans people or people who think they might be trans, it's about maintaining power and prestige for the priests at the top of the pyramid.

Pixiedust1234 · 30/10/2022 19:45

It really is back to no debate isnt it. Let the boys talk in the corridors of power and the backroom because I'm used to talking to politicians. We can't talk on twitter because women are mean (and screenshot things).

To paraphrase Judge Judy... He's lying because his lips are moving.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 30/10/2022 19:24

Hey, it's nothing worse, and a great deal better, than most women have had to deal with if they dared express dissent on this topic outside mumsnet.

You only realise how bad it is, when you list out all the particularly unpleasant incidents, at once.

ReunitedThorns · 30/10/2022 19:22

Elon buys Twitter which raises the prospect of GC views not being treated as hate and silenced, therefore these groups now want to debate in other echo chambers.

ArabellaScott · 30/10/2022 19:05

Also, FFS. I'm sorry.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 30/10/2022 18:42

Did they actually start? I've been sworn at, been mocked, threatened with rape, told to die in a fire, demeaned for my genitals, and been called 'bigot', 'transphobe' and all the rest.

But there wasn't really any debate in there.

Well, no. What he means is he wants to stop other people from debating.

So true!

ResisterRex · 30/10/2022 18:45

I was thinking about all the things that have come from Stonewall:

  • do they stand by their campaign for:

"Judicial clarity of ‘sex by deception’ cases to define the legal position on what constitutes sex by deception based on gender, and to ensure trans people’s privacy is protected."

As per their "A VISION FOR CHANGE
Acceptance without exception for trans people 2017-2022" document on p32, which has since been unlinked from their page but archived by others?

  • how specifically do they plan to engage with "women's groups" and which ones? Given their public support for self-ID in Scotland, what will they say to women's groups and how do they plan to interact with them in future?
  • do they stand by their schools resources, including the EYFS one which said:

“We are all assigned a sex at birth (male or female), but our gender identity is our internal sense of gender. Our gender identity may, or may not, sit comfortably with the sex we are assigned at birth”.

I have such a lot of questions really.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 30/10/2022 18:42

'I want to stop debating'

Fine, stop then. We'll keep going.

FigRollsAlly · 30/10/2022 18:35

I was very puzzled when Laura K introduced him as a long term Tory watcher without mentioning his job title and then the title of Chair of Stonewall appeared on screen underneath his name. Did his previous job/s involve close observation of the Tories? He said he wanted to meet with women’s groups so I hope he does a better job of taking on board our concerns than eg Nicola Sturgeon. Or maybe he’ll just speak to the right sort of groups and hopes to thrash out some sort of dodgy deal with those who hold the real power.

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 30/10/2022 18:19

I don't disagree with less shouting - but maybe less rape and death threats too, but it certainly my experience that the shouting (and the rape and death threats) are all flowing one way.

In the other direction you have women with the temerity to say 'no', to say 'I disagree' and, when the occasion calls for it, to say 'hell no'.

Asdavaluesausage · 30/10/2022 18:14

Is he going to retract the “lesbians are sexual racists” comments issued by the CEO?

applesandpears33 · 30/10/2022 18:11

I agree that less shouting would be good. It would also be helpful if Stonewall could acknowledge some of the concerns that women have raised instead of trying to silence them - eg lesbians should rethink their genital preferences and women who have experienced rape and want single sex facilities should reframe their trauma.
