To feel incredibly sorry for Eddie Izzard

I don't want to pity Eddie but I felt a wave of sadness after reading that Rosie Duffield (MP) said she would rather be arrested than refer to Eddie as a woman.

Eddie gets to use language in a way which fits with his belief system.
Rosie says, with regard to the potential situation where she could be arrested for using language in accordance with her belief system, that she would have to accept being arrested.
And you think Eddie is the one we should feel sorry for.

Asdavaluesausage · 29/10/2022 06:50

That was one of my first wake up calls. Lily Madigan telling women that their issues such as gynaecology waiting lists and maternal deaths weren’t as important as the ‘real’ issues TW faced. And this was from a ‘womens officer’. 🙄

CorporateBull · 29/10/2022 06:07

Asdavaluesausage · 28/10/2022 10:49

Oh yes, for womens officers, they only seem interested in promoting the rights and welfare of a certain type of ‘women’, the male ones.

This is what always strikes me about transwomen are women, and not a subset of women. Because the ones I hear talking, and there may be others I haven’t come across, only seem to be interested in the issues of transwomen and not biological women. So women are told we need to include transwomen but it doesn’t seem to flow both ways. If transwomen=women then why aren’t they talking about ALL the issues women face?

My great-niece was born today. My fervent wish for her is that she will never have to live in a world as batshit as this, and my pledge to her is that I will do everything I can to ensure that doesn't happen. Interestingly, no one "assigned her gender" at birth, which I suppose is a good start.

itwasntmetho · 28/10/2022 18:47

I love Rosie, I’m please she’s stopped with the “male bodied “ bullshit to just plainly say now that a man is not a fucking woman.
she’s so classy I have a massive lady crush on her.

Abhannmor · 28/10/2022 18:45

Bloke here. I don't feel a bit sorry for the Izzard of Was. Furthermore I'd have no problem sharing a toilet with him.

But , unlike other posters , I don't feel disappointed in him. This is because I could never see his comic 'genius'. Graham Norton also leaves me cold - his part in Fr Ted excepted

Just for balance - I took against Ricky Gervais ages ago. There's no pleasing me.

Anothernamechange3 · 27/10/2022 20:55

Please stay. I think you’re at the point a lot of people start out at, wanting to be kind and feeling sorry for someone but obviously not wanting to share a changing room/toilet. Then learning that actually this is exactly what this ideology leads to and being shocked, and then maybe rethinking the idea that people like Rosie Duffield are being mean. In my opinion it’s legitimate concerns and questions that need to be discussed, and we all need to stay in the room to discuss them.

Absolutely this.

Wow this is a long thread. I'm assuming it's another where women are told they're not behaving in a suitably ladylike fashion by putting a male's needs in front of their own?

Gender fluid is like Non binary. Meaningless bullshit. Either the person is lost and needs to find their way out or they are a self regarding wanker. Sometimes both.

Love that 🙂

WeeBisom · 28/10/2022 15:12

On this point about gender fluidity, you can already see the absurdity in action with the Guardian. The other day, the Guardian was upset at the 'transphobia' of refusing to call Izzard a woman, and at questioning whether he would be on an all female shortlist. The pronouns 'she' and 'her' were spread on thick, and Eddie was described as 'female identifying'.

But the very next day, there's another article with words from Eddie himself confirming that he doesn't insist on female pronouns, and any pronoun will do, he's not a woman he's in fact gender fluid, and he doesn't believe trans women should be on all female shortlists.

So in one day, the Guardian had egg on its face after scolding people for calling Izzard a man and using male pronouns when in fact....it's entirely consonant with how Eddie identifies. In the rush to affirm Izzard as one of the sacred trans women, the Guardian has in fact misgendered him and gotten his gender identity completely wrong. But I bet it won't apologise to the people it called 'transphobes'.

It shows how mad the whole situation is. The Guardian made an erroneous assumption about Izzard's gender identity and proceeded to tell people off for being bigots...but if someone is gender fluid then surely you can't get their gender wrong!

TrainedByCats · 28/10/2022 14:47

ColdstreamAnnie · 27/10/2022 20:37

He is gender fluid, I believe.
I suppose I felt sorry for him because I can't imagine how difficult it must be to identify as one gender and have lots of people tell you that you're not.

@ColdstreamAnnie so even you say he doesn’t identify as one gender. Are we supposed to switch which gender pronoun we use for the (non gender specific) dude? Do we go on the lipstick cos I’m going to get mightily pissed off if I get called sir every day as I wear lipstick once in a blue moon. Similarly heels. It is going to be simply impossible to remember the specific rules for each person we meet and if this (non gender specific) dude assumes we’ll remember for him (I’m assuming no lipstick today so I’m not misgendering him) because he’s (still no lipstick) famous then that is arrogant as hell

Can’t you see how monumentally absurd that is?

nilsmousehammer · 28/10/2022 14:30

"Eddie Izzard has been waiting 37 years for people to 'calm down' about her gender" don't exactly come across honestly from someone whose schtick is to be as loudly provocative as possible about it.

Quite. In fact Izzard has made a very successful living out of it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/10/2022 14:26

How is this decided, by a CLP vote?

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 28/10/2022 14:26

You really felt a "wave of sadness" and "incredibly sorry" for Eddie Izzard? Well poor you. I shall play my teeniest tiniest violin for Eddie who neither needs nor deserves pity from anyone.

Though goodness knows he gives himself plenty. Quotes like "Eddie Izzard has been waiting 37 years for people to 'calm down' about her gender" don't exactly come across honestly from someone whose schtick is to be as loudly provocative as possible about it.

It's Rosie Duffield and Abtisam Mohamed (and the people of Sheffield) who have something to lose. Not Eddie Izzard.

I think EI was at uni there, plus the current MP is standing down at the next election.

Thank you 😍

Brefugee · 28/10/2022 14:21

it's also got a large majority, IIRC (I don't live there now and my family don't live in that ward) which means it's a parachute-target. He also has a tenuous link in that he started uni there but left pretty fast.

SweetSenorita · 28/10/2022 14:12

Brefugee · 28/10/2022 14:09

Does Sheffield need saving?

unfortunately it does. We said at the time that building Meadowhall would kill the city centre if alternative uses/businesses weren't supported, and it didn't take long for the wheels to come off. It needs a lot of help and guidance (although Kelham Island recently being named as the 35th best place in the world to live - i think - was a bit of a boost)

Ah, OK. Thank you. That might explain why it's been targeted 😚

Sorry, I do agree with you. I just now use that term to avoid any misconceptions in conversation as that word has come to mean anyone of any sex who happens to want it, and I am talking about one sex only and their sex based rights.

thanks. It really does make me think of the Ferengi though "feeeemaales"

Lol at Izzard the saviour of Sheffield

Does Sheffield need saving? Anymore so than London, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle or [insert city of your choice]?

Why has he gone for Sheffield? Whatever the reason, all power to the women of Sheffield in fighting this. I stand with you.

I hate it too, but I'd rather that than be force teamed with men into one ladybrain "gender".

I am absolutely sick to the back teeth of the blurring and obfuscation of language which this movement has manipulated knowingly and cynically to its own ends.

Woman - adult human female
Female - adjective, pertaining to the sex of those which produce large immobile gametes
Feminine - adjective, pertaining to the qualities considered to be [often stereotypically] those of women.

A man may be feminine in his appearance, dress or mannerisms, but he can never be female or a woman.

(I know we all know this, I just wanted to make the statement because I'm pissed off.)

nilsmousehammer · 28/10/2022 14:02

Brefugee · 28/10/2022 13:48

I find it tragic that we appear to have raised a generation of females

is it only me who hates the use of "females" as though we're being talked about by the Ferengi or Incels? we're women.

Sorry, I do agree with you. I just now use that term to avoid any misconceptions in conversation as that word has come to mean anyone of any sex who happens to want it, and I am talking about one sex only and their sex based rights. Not gender, not identity, not colonised terms, not opening the door to 'but how does this affect TW' because female based issues aren't to do with them.

For the same reason I'm now forced to refer to myself as a female homosexual to avoid any confusion although I tend to get the same shocked response as I did in the 80s when I called myself a dyke to own and take the insult out of a term of abuse. Naice girls would now say they were pan or queer.
