I feel quite sick at this.

She was stunned then to receive an email from the hospital's chief executive Maxine Estop Green telling her the operation was off.

She told her the hospital 'did not share her beliefs' and she should make alternative arrangements for her surgery.

The message added the hospital was committed to protecting staff from what it described as 'unacceptable distress'.

Emma urged them to reconsider, adding in a further message she thought they had misunderstood her requests, which she said were entirely within the law.

The hospital said it would offer a private room but would NOT facilitate her requests for single-sex care after her operation.

It also mentioned her comment about pronouns and said it had a responsibility to protect staff from 'discrimination and harassment'.

Good catch.

looks like some posters have forgotten that they are supposed to be intersectional ‘feminists’ and not male sexual activities activists.

Looks like some posters have forgotten that religious beliefs shouldn’t be defended when they are used to cause harm to women and undermine their autonomy.

I wrote a simple and true fact.

Nothing more and nothing less.

You are attempting to argue with a fact. Go outside and touch some grass.

Twitter-ese won't help you here.

Answer the question. Do you think it helps women of faith to force them to accept a male nurse washing their vulvas?

Coyoacan · 24/10/2022 13:08

The threat to those women is their religions

So those women are guilty of wrongthink and the consequences should be no access to medical care.

What are the survivors of sexual assault guilty of?

Oh! Thank you!

Where was that poster who wanted evidence that women's beliefs and faiths are being targeted as a barrier to male sexual freedoms and disrespect and dismissal of those women justified on the grounds of 'yucky religion not Like Me and Other RIght Thinking People' with absolutely no awareness or care for the reality of those women, their needs and their equality whatsoever?

Here it is ^^

Are you deluding yourself that you are saving them from religion when you support forcing them to accept a male nurse washing their vulvas?

If we're thought experimenting, how would I feel if I had to provide care to an activist covered in badges and clothes proclaiming their wish to rape and murder females who want single sex spaces or to be homosexual?

I'd provide the exact same care as I would to someone who was nice and basically civilised in their approach to women and homosexuals,, and I'd do it as a matter of pride while accommodating and caring for their needs to the best of my ability. It's called duty of care and being a professional. And believing in actual equality.

The patient can sue all she wants. There’s absolutely no obligation on hospitals to guarantee all female care

Is this a fact? That sounds like a serious threat to the healthcare of women from some very strict religions.

The threat to those women is their religions.

nilsmousehammer · 24/10/2022 12:54

How would you like it if a man refused a female dr on the grounds that they were female?

Well the inclusive, kind, patient centred thing to do would be to value that they have their reasons and that this needs to be supported for them.

Because if they're stressed or unwilling to engage in care that is very bad for my patient

and it's not about me and my political jollies, it's about me doing a job to provide care.

Plus, having had diversity training and some experience of the world I am not ignorant of the varied reasons as to why we may have a patient with those needs and why they need to be supported, and I'm not a complete arsehole who doesn't care.

334bu · 24/10/2022 12:36

Of course men should have the right to same sex care, if they so choose. However, this would be on grounds of privacy and dignity only, as safety from female HCPs is not really an issue for men. If only it were the same for women when being treated by some male HCPs.

RufusthefIoraImissingreindeer · 24/10/2022 12:33

She literally said that she would see a male doctor

There is no point whatsoever saying 'what if a man didn't want a female doctor' because it has no relevance to this case

Thelnebriati · 24/10/2022 12:29

Why shouldn't men be able to ask for a male or female doctor? I don't think patients of either sex should have to disclose abuse to get the care that suits them, and without worrying about the hurt feelings of medical staff.

Helleofabore · 24/10/2022 12:29

How would you like it if a man refused a female dr on the grounds that they were female? Only medical qualifications count.

Isn't the point to not cause additional distress to a patient? Not to make a political point?

Isn't this exactly the same as Mridul Wadhwa telling female rape victims that they will need to 'reframe' their prejudices against males providing care?

KittenKong · 24/10/2022 12:23

Of they were ‘that’ religious they would go to a facility that catered to them.

Coyoacan · 24/10/2022 12:14

I imagine men from strict religions have the same need for same-sex care.

I worked in a care home in the seventies and in those days there were very few male nurses. It broke my heart that elderly men had to receive intimate care from women. Such a loss of dignity.

gogohmm · 24/10/2022 12:08

@Coyoacan

No hospital can guarantee all female or all male care because emergencies happen, staff can be sick, and quite frankly, not all hospitals have enough staff to provide this request, often there's only one consultant of a specialty available (or in the case of surgery they need the only 2!) How would you like it if a man refused a female dr on the grounds that they were female? Only medical qualifications count.

With aftercare a hospital can try but not promise. Intensive care is always mixed too

nilsmousehammer · 24/10/2022 12:03

The patient can sue all she wants. There’s absolutely no obligation on hospitals to guarantee all female care

Then one is going to have be created under law.

If good will and inclusive/accessible values are no longer being extended to females then it will have to be compelled.

And if we're seriously talking about 'misgendering' becoming a 'hate crime' to protect male feelings, then this demand for female feelings is a whole lot more sensible and necessary isn't it?

Well, that then sounds like a challenge is needed.

Because in this time where there is such a high % of sexual abuse survivors, maybe it is time for hospitals to actually centre the needs of females.

This has certainly highlighted to many women that I know who were unaware of the issues that all those people declaring that people can already decline care from someone they are not comfortable with are speaking empty platitudes.

I am sorry that this woman has had to go through this to highlight the issues, but now there is no going back to those empty meaningless phrases.

RIDICULOUS

Anyone else finding that the quality of the TRAs we're getting is depreciating rapidly? There's no satisfaction in out-debating one so hopeless.

SnapeAlways · 23/10/2022 23:19

I agree that a petition/campaign is a less than ideal solution and it is outrageous that this was needed.

However this should make HCA or any organisation think twice before treating another patient in a similar fashion.

Teresa’s requests were both lawful and reasonable and no woman should have to justify her reason for wanting single-sex intimate nursing care.

The Princess Grace still need to be held accountable by the CQC.

Okay:

"Hi, I'm very religious so I want to be treated only by female staff."
"We can try our best but due to staffing we can't guarantee it. If you need a guarantee of female-only treatment then I'm afraid we can't go ahead because that's not possible to promise."

Not okay:

"Hi, I'm very religious so I want to be treated only by female staff."
"We don't share your values so we're cancelling your treatment "

The reason given for the cancellation was not the request per se, but the belief behind the request, a belief which has been demonstrated to be legally protected in the same way being religious is protected. That is, organisations aren't allowed to point at that belief and use it as the reason for unfavourable treatment.
