just read his new statesman word vomit

All very word salad

but what he is saying - but doesn’t have to balls to actually write it down clearly is:

the idea that there are two sexes and women are oppressed by men is reactionary and right wing

people (ie almost all women) must be accountable for this wrong think to - well - to him and other right thinkers

its so disingenuous

and just so soaked in misogyny

and worded in such a fluffy manner that the right on folx can nod away with it and bask in the glow of being so wonderfully righteous

he’s such a dickhead

‘Accountability’ is just one of those nuspeak bastardised buzzwords of the TRA lexicon.
It is a signal to the mob that you are one of them.

Accountability starts from the position thst the ideas are wrong

that is what was so clever about Graham nortons framing - he didn’t come out and say he doesn’t think there’s two seeds and all the other stuff that sounds insane when you say it outloud - but heard it very clear he is on the tra side because by talking about accountability the whole assumption is that it is wrong think. A genuinely clever love - but also obviously an arsehole disingenuous move.

and then Billy came along but Billy is nowhere near as clever as Graham and hence you have his Twitter diarrhea

You think? I think it was an incredibly stupid move. Classic "I didn't think the leopards would eat MY face" stuff.

Not that Silly Bragg is much smarter.

Except that accountability can be positive and help people do better, eg governors hold head teachers to account, meaning that they require them to justify their decisions.

TheClogLady · 19/10/2022 22:30

Visions of Billy getting a shiny new super-authoritarian clipboard for Xmas to help him keep track of all the nasty wimms and their wrong opinions…

It makes no sense. Surely it’s the societies that are keen on holding people to account that are the authoritarian ones. Iranian girls who refuse to wear headscarves? Held to account. Russians protesting against the war? Held to account.
The idea of authoritarianism as something that happens if people aren’t held to account enough for their words is a complete reversal of reality

Brilliantly put.

The verbiage these people use to try to escape the fact that they simply want to punish people who have views they disagree with, really is quite extraordinary. Bullies always try to blame their victims for the fact they bully them. That’s exactly the psychology behind this ‘ I’m holding you to account’ bollocks.

Yes. I hadn't really put my finger on what is wrong with the term accountability, but accountability is what we hold people to who say they will do something or who have a responsibility to do something - it is about keeping people on the straight and narrow. You don't hold people to account just for having/expressing opinions. You can legitimately challenge them or argue against them and judge them by their responses, but that is not accountability.

Oh God, he was one of the "Putin weaponised a wedge issue and I believe everything he says" dipshits? He gets thicker and thicker.

Nah, I reckon he knew exactly what Putin was doing but he just couldn't resist using it to have a pop at JKR. After all, as he himself says, he thinks guilt by association is a 'bad faith argument'.

He's been getting himself into a right old pickle this evening.

Also, behold March 22 Billy Bragg vs October 22 Billy Bragg. Thinks 'guilt by association is a bad faith argument' apparently.....

And now the woman whose life saving surgery was cancelled due to her requesting single sex care at a private single sex hospital needs to show whether she lost a job or twitter account to be considered an argument. Is dying not enough now?

I genuinely have no more words. Why do so many men hate women?

There's a certain type of man who sees women like dogs. We love our dogs, we look after them, we court their love, but we don't trust them to make decisions or offer worthwhile views because as much as we care for them, they aren't people. They need training and to obey us, for their own benefit as much as ours. In extreme cases, they might even need to die. It's sad, but what can you do?

KatMcBundleFace · 19/10/2022 21:17

I reckon this is personal somehow to him.

Can't back down from the ideology, no matter how illogical, means these people have to face the consequences of their actions.

EndlessTea · 19/10/2022 21:12

God he’s dim.

DameMaud · 19/10/2022 21:07

Is anyone giving him the full list now he's asking?

RhannionKPSS · 19/10/2022 21:00

The man is a misogynist anti Semitic bawbag arse.

Longerthanfiveweeks · 19/10/2022 21:00

He hasn't been following this for very long, has he?

He has though. But he knew he was right, straight from the start, to think those women were nasty and Stonewall were on the right side of history, because The Guardian said so via Owen Jones, so he didn’t need to find out anything more about it all because he was already right, and he’s the good guy and so he must right and so he is right, because Owen Jones and Nancy Kelly and the Guardian.

ReneBumsWombats · 19/10/2022 20:35

there should be a legal/regulatory system to hold people “to account”.

And there is. It's illegal to defame someone or incite violence or hatred. What more does Silly Bragg want?

Anydaynowonewouldhope · 19/10/2022 20:00

I honestly don’t think he’s intelligent enough to understand the issues

as far as I can work out he thinks it’s an amazing thing to say thst people shouldn’t give death/rape threats but there should be a legal/regulatory system to hold people “to account”. And everyone should be held to account for, uk everything.

it’s reached the point at the party wjere
you just wander away from the boring self centred man jabbering on and move forward with your life

He’s tweeted to query whether anyone has lost their job and their livelihood because of gc things they’ve said

extraordinary

He hasn't been following this for very long, has he?

I'm actually hopeful. He's asking and maybe he will come to realise just how ill informed he is. A lot of people still think GC means giving a shit about what people wear or what names they prefer.

Anydaynowonewouldhope · 19/10/2022 19:52

He’s now said he’s sorry Rachel Rooneys life was destroyed (paraphrase)

and has followed up by saying how great he was for googling her name

OP posts:
Anydaynowonewouldhope · 19/10/2022 19:50

To be honest it’s very difficult to work out what he’s saying

basically as his “logic” is playing out he
is getting caught out all over the place about what to say

hes basically dodged that point - and landed on the argument that a legal system is needed for “accountability”.

he hasn’t worked out yet that this means he’s saying that unelected judiciary get to determine what are society’s standards. Uhoh. I mean the judiciary does have a role - but it’s very complex how that plays out.

dumb as batshit.

OP posts:
Signalbox · 19/10/2022 19:47

He’s not very forthcoming with the detail is he?

Signalbox · 19/10/2022 19:46

Anydaynowonewouldhope · 19/10/2022 19:11

He’s tweeted to query whether anyone has lost their job and their livelihood because of gc things they’ve said

extraordinary

So is he saying loss of livelihood would be a consequence too far?

CrossPurposes · 19/10/2022 19:42

It's hard to fathom how a man who wrote this

Once upon a time at home
I sat beside the telephone
Waiting for someone to pull me through
When at last it didn't ring, I knew it wasn't you

got to here.

Anydaynowonewouldhope · 19/10/2022 19:41

So he’s now morphed his argument into the ground breaking view that there should be a legal
and regulatory system

fuck me

jk Rowling wanted to dismantle the legal system is a new one to me - but turns out that’s what he was arguing against
