Tory meltdown hurting our chances to turn Labour round?

Something I'm worrying about - the Tory shitshow is so comprehensive it's looking like Labour just have to hang on until the next election and step into government. Doesn't give them much incentive to listen to women, does it?

I hope I'm wrong but it's on my mind.

I gave up my Labour membership. I want to be Labour again. But when you see Annelise Dodds tweeting support for the KS Pink News stunt and then Baroness Thornton retweeting it you just despair 😞

Fieldofgreycorn · 19/10/2022 21:41

It’s the EHRC that has written that deliberate misgendering is harassment.

Tories introduced that equality legislation (covers misgendering) as soon as they got in, they ve had 12.5 years to get rid of it but haven't.

Which equality legislation are you referring to specifically here, please?

Campaign from within. And cross-party. All power to you!

I agree, campaign from within, let them kick you out if they don't like it.

I am fucking livid. How dare he fall for this bullshit that opponents to self id are transphobes. How dare he refuse to listen to genuine safeguarding concerns. I am a Labour Party member, although inactive. I don’t know whether to resign or start campaigning from within

There's still time for everyone who voted Tory, because they knew what a woman is🤭🙄 to demand safeguarding legislation for women's single sex spaces.

They haven't gone yet.

Quite, though i fear even with another 10 years in power, they wouldn't because that would cost money.

Though i am "impressed" at how they have safe guarded maternity services for women and babies.

It is going to be a complete fucking disaster for women’s rights:

Labour have, already, twice as many female MPs as the Tories do & many more waiting in the wings.

I do think our rights will be protected unless you think 150 or so female Labour MPs will turn on them selves?

ALL of the the things i'm concerned about in regard to Trans have occurred under a Tory Govt, with few female MPs in the party.

I think the trans issue is being cleverly used by the Cons, whilst the actual is completely different.

Why do Labour not stand up for women and children? Why is Kier Starmer presenting at Pink News? I just don't get it. Why are the women labour MPs supporting him?? For any favour would you listen to women!!!!!

RedToothBrush · 19/10/2022 20:57

Snuck that out whilst everyone else is having a meltdown over there being no fucking PM.

Thats cos he knows its bloody toxic but can now push it through anyway.

He will set us back 50 years.

Starmer just took time out to present an award for Prick News and pledge misgendering to become an aggravated offence.

Really scared now.

There are a hell of a lot of non-feminists, so far non-plussed by trans issues voters who will say a resounding fuck off to that!

I call my kids by the wrong names, I have a great aunt who goes through about ten rellies before she gets to me (half of whom are dead).

it’s ludicrous to make saying-what-uou-see a criminal matter - remember that autistic 18 year old child carer who got fined for asking a PCSO if they were a man or a woman?

Keir Starmer's entire project as Labour leader has been about destroying the left and appealing to social conservatives. Opposing self ID, denying TWAW and supporting sex-based rights should be a natural fit for that. The fact that he hasn't done it yet is probably just because (a) he hasn't got round to it, there being other issues perceived as more important to more people, and (b) every firm commitment to one side in a very polarised debate has the potential to alienate a lot of people and stop them voting for you, whereas fudging and sitting on the fence allows you to hope they won't care too much, will be more swayed by other issues or that your opponents won't be any better anyway.

I'm afraid I just don't think opposition to self ID is the vote winner people here think it is. We're an echo chamber and people over-estimate the number of informed GC feminists there are in the population as a whole, and under-estimate the number of woke TWAWs + ordinary people who don't really know, don't really care or haven't really thought about it. Certainly for most people, even if you sat down and went through the issues and they concluded they agreed with us, it's still going to be way down their list of priorities. A long way below inflation, energy bills and government competence.

Fieldofgreycorn · 19/10/2022 18:10

Can anyone explain why a politician with a trans brother is not required to declare an interest and take no further part in trans issues?

Do you know how utterly absurd and prejudiced that sounds?

Can you imagine someone saying that about a politician with a gay brother? For example when voting on equal marriage or the age of consent?

You know some people believe homosexuality is wrong, right?

endofthelinefinally · 19/10/2022 17:42

Hopefully an election campaign will publicise more issues. That is my fervent hope. As someone who is desperately pinning hopes on the Baroness Casey review, I hope the investigations into the Met Police continue whatever happens and extend to every other police force in the country.

Kendodd · 19/10/2022 17:39

Problem is, if you vote for a party like that, how is it to be interpreted? How are number crunchers to know what policy you're voting for? I self ID and sex based rights are the only and overriding thing your interested in, find a political party that has that as a single issue, or set one up (serious suggestion). You will almost certainly not win any seats, but you will send a clear message to the other parties.

It is a real shame because it felt like the tide was finally going our way but a Labour government will be a disaster for women's rights.

Our only hope is that the SDP or even Laurence Fox's party Reclaim, stand enough candidates and take enough votes to make all the main political parties pause and realise that being weak on women's rights is going to cost them. (like Farage change the terms of the debate for his cause).

If I had any spare cash I'd be donating to the SDP at the moment.

Did you also look at the rest of their policies?

flyingbuttress43 · 19/10/2022 17:03

If you are a councillor and e.g. a planning consent issue comes up where you have any connection with the person applying you are required to declare an interest and take no further part in the discussion or voting.

Now Suella has gone. We have lost someone who really understood the issues with gender identity ideology.
