Tory meltdown hurting our chances to turn Labour round?

Something I'm worrying about - the Tory shitshow is so comprehensive it's looking like Labour just have to hang on until the next election and step into government. Doesn't give them much incentive to listen to women, does it?

I hope I'm wrong but it's on my mind.

They're putting 2 candidates to the party membership on Monday(?) Sunak is still unpopular with a lot of the members. And I'm sure Jeremy Hunt doesn't want him getting in the way.

Penny Mordaunt is popular with the membership. Does good PMQs. And won't meddle too much in what the Chancellor is doing.

So yes, a tory party problem confused. They are in power so they are the ones who need to be held account as they are the ones who have the power to have changed the issues, but chose not to.

The Tories chose not to go ahead with Self-ID.
They chose not to go ahead with a "trans" conversion therapy ban.
They chose to commission the Cass Review which lead to the closure of the Tavistock and to an overhaul of the medical experimentation of children.
They have clarified that Schools should not be teaching children that they can be born in the wrong body.
They have put someone in the EHRC who has actually clarified the law to say that it allows for sex segregated spaces.
They have a proposed bill to protect academic freedom in universities.
There has been a review of prison policy (which by all accounts was a bit of a fudge but perhaps a step in the right direction).
Withdrawing many departments from the Stonewall "diversity scheme"

Trans ideology is not a problem of the Tories making and they have been frustratingly slow to act against it (probably because initially, like many people, they believed it was a progressive cause and they could get brownie points by going along with it). But they were finally moving slowly in a direction that was away from an extreme gender ideological position. Now that the Tories are in free fall that progress will probably stop because there will be no time for such "unimportant" issues. The hope was that by the next election more progress could have been made so that when Labour finally take over it will be harder for them to do damage.

The argument is NOT that the Tories are better for women in general or that people must vote Tory at the next election, just that on this issue Labour have promised a policy that will harm women and possibly children if they bring in therapy bans for children.

I would hold the labour government to account if they were in power and professing to stop these issues, but still not doing so.

Labour have not said they are planning to stop these issues. If you believe what they say they are planning to embrace a trans ideological position and legislate accordingly. So you will have nothing to hold them to account for.

From the current labour stance i cannot see anything changing than what it currently is.

So you don't think Labour intend to bring in Self ID or a "conversion therapy" ban for "trans" children?

Honestly, there are none so blind as those who will not see.

Musomama1 · 20/10/2022 19:22

Surely it'll be Sunak? Why risk another inexperienced candidate?

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2022 19:14

She might be but if Boris is up against her with membership I reckon he’d get it

Depends on MPs first

tiggergoesbounce · 20/10/2022 19:10

I think Penny Mordaunt is going to be our next Prime Minister

I agree

Let's face it Labour MP's also know what a woman is. But for whatever reason they have become obsessed with securing the rights of a tiny minority of men over the interests of women. And to achieve that they lie that they no longer know what they knew to be true 5 years ago. And they're prepared to bring in laws that force the rest of us to lie about it too

Again, why obsessing with Labour about it Confused

You should be aiming your anger at the people who can change what is happening, the party who are lying to you saying they will change things, they haven't, they have proven they havent. But yet you dont address their failings just keep talking about labour, it sounds ridiculous.

Penny mordaunt told the house of commons "transmen are men and transwomen are women".

Signalbox · 20/10/2022 18:55

This is not a debate that should be being used as something to raise the Tories up for as people keep saying "at least the tories know what a woman is" yes they do, and they blatantly show you the complete disregard they have for us. Its a non sensical argument.

Starmer at the Pink News conference, I think today, announcing that if in power he will beef up 'hate crime' regs against TQ+ and make misgendering much more of a punishable offense, essentially make it illegal.

Yes, it will change. It will get ten times worse.

tiggergoesbounce · 20/10/2022 18:33

its an existing problem that the tories havent dealt with. Labour could be in power soon. Do you expect them to deal with it

If we're looking at which party would be easier to change from the inside - particularly after a decade of left Labour/Green/SNP women trying this and getting absolutely nowhere - it would be easier to get the Tories to grow compassion, a coherent plan and get rid of the sleaze than to get any of the Left parties to stop being visceral misogynists and to ditch this awful, harmful alternative reality stuff.

If you're looking at which party would be easier to change from the inside, look to the smaller parties. They need people and you are more likely to be listened to.

There's 2 years til the next election. From what I'm seeing here and across MN is how disappointed voters are regardless of who they voted. The desire is there for a new party and there will be a fuckload of seats up for grabs.

Signalbox · 20/10/2022 17:25

It's depressing that there are only 30-40 terfy Labour mp's. Whether they are right or wrong they have to keep trying.

I’m amazed there’s that many. I guess it makes sense to keep it quiet until after the general election because they risk deselection. Is that why they don’t speak out? I do hope they all come out into open at some point. It must be quite frustrating for the likes of Rosie Duffield and Tonia Antoniazzi to not be publicly supported by the Labour MPs who privately agree with them.

There are two problems with this.

The first being that there are changes happening under the Tories on this issue. Perhaps more under BJ than Truss, but they have been happening.

But it's also a statement that takes no consideration around how this ideology has operated. Gender ideology exploded onto the scene some 10 years ago, in different countries, largely without regard to what political party was in power.

It operated by capturing officials and institutions quietly, at a low level, and by convincing citizens ad political leaders that it was just another element of gay rights and was also medically and scientifically supported. Articles were published in popular, trusted sources like National Geographic, Scientific American, etc, and major media sources like the Guardian, BBC, CBC, hopped right on board.

The UK, and really England, has actually been unique in stepping back and putting the brakes on the policy element. Unlike countries like Canada, NZ, Scotland, even the US. We don't know for sure, but based o their response there is every reason to think if Labour had been in, the UK would now have laws like Canada, where a women's shelter cannot legally refuse to admit a woman with a penis.

That still, today, seems to be the approach Labour is taking. They have not even allowed open discussion in the party on the issue, which has been disturbing to many even apart from the issue of gender ideology itself. (What else might they not discuss even if their MPs and members are concerned about it.)

No one who makes this argument you have made has ever been able to claim that it would have been different under Labour, because we all know that it would not, it would be worse. Why this exploded as an international issue that captured s many institutions is well worth considering, but it was not caused by the Conservative Party.

This is true I think. Its a good description of what's happened.

I think the reason we have had some success in England compared to other English speaking western countries is that the party in power at the time this happened doesn't have many true believers. There are not that many fanatical tra's in the party because the tra beliefs have come out of the left. That's meant the party's adoption of the policy positions (& especially the underlying ideology) has been more superficial.

But the labour party will almost certainly be the next government so it's important to keep going and puuuullllling within that party. I hope Lachlan & labour women's declaration are right. It's depressing that there are only 30-40 terfy Labour mp's. Whether they are right or wrong they have to keep trying.

There’s not much to like tbf.

TooBigForMyBoots you obviously don’t have the option to vote Labour or Tory whereas I just can’t bring myself to vote for either. Call me naïve but I didn’t realise there was no Labour or Conservative Party in NI.

TooBigForMyBoots · 20/10/2022 15:54

Ah, OK.Smile

If any NI women are reading this, there's a Women Deserve Better rally at Belfast City Hall next Saturday.

Floisme · 20/10/2022 15:51

Yeah that Joan Smith - deluded, gullible and stomps off whenever she can't get her own way.

Joan Smith unimpressed:
'Last night, Starmer told us who he was and exactly what he intends to do. In a tragedy for Left-leaning women and the country, it is now clear that Labour has been fully captured by gender extremists. A Starmer government will look after the interests of trans activists, not women.'

How long before someone comes along to berate Joan for stirring up a culture war and calling her deluded for thinking the Tories are great for women's rights.

Oh no I'm not, sorry I mistook your meaning.

I can't vote for Labour or the Conservatives, so I have no horse in this race. My concern is women's rights, not English political parties.

Oh right. We're in the same boat then.

Signalbox · 20/10/2022 15:28

What is most bizarre is that those on the brink of getting what they want most (i.e a Labour government) are still so insecure that they feel the need to berate women who are critical of potential Labour policy, misrepresenting their arguments, calling them deluded etc. You are about to get exactly what you want. You can relax a bit now! Roll on the women's rights revolution!
