Tom is angry at women who want their own category in sports and the interviewer does not even quiz him on it.

Is this Tom Daley who is so upset about the World Cup being in Qatar, the same Tom Daley who was happy to compete in Russia and other countries where homosexuality is illegal?

Seems like he's happy to stand up against discrimination until it's financially damaging to himself.

It’s funny how no one ever worries about trans men who delay medical transition so thst they can compete in women categories

Just like how no one complains about trans women who compete professionally as male and only transition after retirement.

SallyLockheart · 15/10/2022 13:46

Well, twitter isn’t too impressed by Tom’s independent article. 😀

AutumnCrow · 15/10/2022 13:37

He's not very bright really.

Shakenotslurred · 15/10/2022 13:27

So has Tom as a gay man ever dated a transman?? Or is it a case of Transally in the streets transphobe in the sheets?

Quackmire · 15/10/2022 13:27

And the worst thing in all of this for our
dear little Tom?
He's getting regularly wet.
As in, that's the terrible "price of diving";
as in jumping in a synchronized fashion
into various bodies of water.
Chronically fucking wet.
Unimaginable sacrifice.
How can this even be allowed, I wonder.
Surely, in this day & age (AD 2022) all
the necessary precautions must be put in place
to safeguard the health and safety of our most
talented athletes.
Otherwise, they'll get so unbearably fucking
wet they might start doing some pretty stupid things.
Like knitting.
Or talking nonsense to every journalist
who's bored enough to listen anyway.

JamSandle · 15/10/2022 13:25

Lost a huge amount of respect for him. But glad he has shown his true colours.

TooHot2022 · 15/10/2022 13:24

I realised Tom Daley would end up like this when I saw his 'lovely' (sic) husband, Dustin Lance Black, being interviewed by the lovely (sic) Damian Barr at a literary event. The stench of misogyny was so thick in the air I had to leave!

Shmithecat2 · 15/10/2022 11:58

Ugh. Knew what an actual woman was when he wanted to buy a baby though. Bloody hypocrite.

First thing that jumped into my head before I even read the interview. Well the first few lines anyway . Not paying to read his claptrap 🤫🙄

Fizbosshoes · 15/10/2022 13:23

I don't think anyone objects to transwomen competing in sports (either at a professional or amateur level) ...but there is a disadvantage when they want to compete in women's sport. Apart from the biological advantage of having been through male puberty there is the sharing of (previously) single spaces in changing rooms etc.
Much easier for a male athlete to "be kind" be inclusive" because its not them that will be put at a disadvantage. For a lot of sports people, the prize money or earnings from winning are only part of the success. Making it to the podium (as Tom should know) opens other doors - sponsorships, book deals, merchandise, clothing ranges , TV shows etc. It's not just the winning and the medal that are potentially going to be missed it's further opportunities too. (This enraged me about Lance Armstrong - obviously for very different reasons- it wasn't just the glory and money from winning that others missed out on because he cheated, it was all the "add-ons" and opportunities that occur from being a household name)

SallyLockheart · 15/10/2022 13:20

Tom said

If people, especially LGBT people, or any minority really, get complacent with the rights that we have, if we don’t continue to try and fight for more equality and more legal protection, then people will come and take them away,” says Daley

well Tom substitute women for the word minority, and there we have it

Halstead · 15/10/2022 13:06

And the big problem is people who believe transwoman are the same as a woman in every aspect (usually men)

Until it comes to dating/being intimate ….

Or when you need to rent the womb of another human.

Twiggywinkle13 · 15/10/2022 13:04

Funny that he was clear about biological sex when he was looking for a surrogate?

Catiette · 15/10/2022 13:00

(No, realised it does work - he's speaking hypothetically. Tired...)

zanahoria · 15/10/2022 12:59

Then the rest of the interview is about lovely Tom and his lovely kitchen, his lovely husband, his lovely kid, how he thinks about his lovely grandma and the Queen, his lovely knitting and his lovely designer outfits that he is so brave wearing on the tube.

Catiette · 15/10/2022 12:57

(Of course, my amendment doesn't quite work - I appear to have changed Daley's sex to make my point... but you get it, regardless!)

Smilelesstalkmore · 15/10/2022 12:57

Tom is just another in the long line of misogynistic men who just don't see women as equal. They see women as primarily there to serve the needs of men, whether that be through providing their wombs for men to rent so that they can have their own baby, or through moving over in their own sporting category to allow males to compete in them if they want.

Of course men like Tom think that women should be able to get their own jobs, have access to an education or be able to vote. Hell, he even thinks they have to right to have their own category in sport - but only on the condition that those women understand that a women's category merely exists to validate males who want to compete in it, nothing more. Any woman getting above her station with the notion that only females should compete in women's sport is a 'hateful bigot' who needs taking down a peg or two.

Also, his fucking knitting gets right on my tits.

THIS

Catiette · 15/10/2022 12:56

“We should be sending out a message to everyone that everyone is welcome no matter who you are, where you come from, your gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, whatever it is, everyone should feel welcome when they try sport,” he says. We don’t get into the question of fairness, here: the counter-argument runs that divers who were born biologically female would be at a clear competitive disadvantage. But So Daley’s point is a broader one. “I just think of myself girls and young women starting out on their careers when I was younger. I’m not transgender, obviously, but if I was told as a gay man female I was never going to be able to compete because of who I was (because, after all, inherent in the concept of competing is the potential to win), then of course I’d never have tried.”

Fixed.

So simple.

The only difference is that the "never going to be able to compete" is more accurate in my version, above, as women will be totally excluded from meaningful competition in the world he envisions, whereas "never" in his original version is a misrepresentation of "won't be feel able to compete in my preferred category."

Naivety? Hypocrisy? Bloody-mindedness? Sheer lack of intelligence? Misogyny?

Infuriating, regardless.

zanahoria · 15/10/2022 12:51

The journalist is so feeble, accepting Tom's 'broader' point without asking him why he he thinks women should not be allowed women only events. Not even pointing out that FINA's decision came about via a rebellion of female swimmers backed up by ex stars like Sharron Davies.

And the big problem is people who believe transwoman are the same as a woman in every aspect (usually men). They are not. They have been through male puberty, have the body type of a man, the male self confidence and no amount of hormones, wigs, make up and dresses will ever change that.

Some transwomen do acknowledge the difference, some are more appreciative of the struggles woman face and respect that. Some just use their 'trans' status to their own advantage.

JacquelineCarlyle · 15/10/2022 12:48

I used to be such a Tom Daley fan but buying a baby and now this is just terrible. Such a misogynistic prick.
