Another friendship bites the dust

Apparently it has come to some friends' attention that I have radical views and they want nothing more to do with me. I'm now blocked.

This the second time this has happened with people I was close to.

Trying not to mind, but I do mind. We had lots of fun things planned and I'm mourning the loss of the friendships.

What have other people done in this situation?

Shakenotslurred

I think some of us are still waiting for that poster to come back to quite a number of threads for actual engagement, so I will be interested to see you finally get some.

Igneococcus · 09/10/2022 17:08

I think I'd give them Matthew Syed's comment in the ST to read. "Tiptoeing around free speech is no way to raise resilient children" A lot of what he says applies to friendships and working environments too.

Some people love to be offended. They get a kick out of being ‘outraged’ by other people’s opinions and blocking them. I guess they enjoy the warm glow of moral superiority. It’s the new in thing.

There is definitely something in this.

I replied to the offer of a discussion. Still waiting. Maybe @SecretTransTwitterEngineer is getting all their ducks in a row…

pattihews · 09/10/2022 16:57

Sure we can talk about biology, about the nature of sex, how sex hormones do the heavy lifting wrt sex differences, but none of you will discuss this on a 1-2-1 basis and without pivoting madly. It's just constant dogpiling, grandstanding and bad faith arguing....and that's the nicer ones.

Well that's a blast from the past. Have you come from 2018 to argue with us, secrettransTwitterengineer? We dealt with the 'sex is nothing but hormones' argument back then and no one's tried it since. You'll be spouting TWAW: No debate next!

Genetics are far more important than hormones, which change enormously over a female human’s life span.

Our DNA (which includes chromosomes) is present in every single cell of our bodies.
Genome Sequencing is the future of medicine. It’s why many systems (eg NHS vaccines) have started specifically asking for ‘sex recorded at birth’.

We can’t keep using sex and gender as interchangeable words because it will result in subpar outcomes for trans people*

You can test a discarded cigarette butt and find out if the smoker was male or female, nowt to do with hormones, it’s all DNA.

I’m sorry to hear about your friend, Saph - I don’t know if it helps but I’ve recently had a few people contact me saying that they can see now that what I said to them in 2018 was correct and apologising for telling me to be kinder!

*female hearts really don’t seem to like being transplanted into male bodies - terribly terfy of them:

I have differences of opinion with lots of people, sometimes I argue with them about it, they are still my friends and I love them dearly.

GCs, what do you think is different about your opinion that friends and family drop you for? Why do you think people see you so badly for it?

The thing is, the genderist position is essentially unarguable. Logic does not apply, it is a belief system purely. So rational debate is not possible and only blocking/ostracising/shouting bigot will do.

This is why GC people often have others treating them like this.

Helleofabore · 09/10/2022 16:43

And who is pivoting from anything, exactly?

Helleofabore · 09/10/2022 16:42

Sigh. Effect not effort.

Helleofabore · 09/10/2022 16:41

I'll bite, in what way was pp 'dehuminizing' with their use of 'GC'. Funny how you didn't see fit to explain that part...

Did you miss the part where I explained that if we started a sentence with ‘Transes’ or ‘The transes’, it would and should be deleted?

Not sure how you don’t understand the dehumanising effort of that poster saying ‘GCs’. Or do you use ‘transes’ in your usual speech patterns?

Or do you not understand that activists use dehumanisation to discredit or make it easier to disconnect what people say because they are a hateful group who are disconnected from humanity?

So, your GC friends aren't dropping you because you have different opinions to them, wheras TRA's are dropping friends when they find out they have GC views?

I'm not sure that's the impression you meant to give, is it?

JunebuginDecember · 09/10/2022 16:02

Wow those last two posts. Remind me again how you lot are all innocent victim's and the 'tra's' are bullies?

That would be down to the trans activists' liberal use of rape threats, memes depicting violence, protests hanging the effigies of female politicians, placards calling for the murder of a children's author and so on. That last was held up by a formerly-incarcerated transwoman who'd served a prison sentence for murder and torture, IIRC, so hardly meaningless.

Next to that, me mocking your use of initialisms is rather small beer.

pattihews · 09/10/2022 16:13

Found better, more rational people to be friends with.

GingerPCatt · 09/10/2022 16:12

@SapphosRock i seem to remember you live in a very woke area. I live near there and have been told I’m transphobic because I don’t believe trans women are literally women. I was told this by several friends who are lesbians. This was a few years ago and we didn’t discuss it further. My guess is that as they were in long term relationships they hadn’t experienced transbians taking over previously lesbian or women centric spaces. I do wonder if they have changed their minds but I haven’t brought it up.

Shakenotslurred · 09/10/2022 16:05

It’s our skirts you see @JunebuginDecember theyre just too spinny for our female legs to handle, that’s why we pivot. Now if we were TW, I’m sure our legs would cope just fine and there would be no pivoting at all. They’re used to spinny skirts.

JunebuginDecember · 09/10/2022 16:03

Also PPs point about GCs deflecting and pivoting away from explaining anything I'm afraid may have been proven correct 😂

ArabellaScott · 09/10/2022 16:03

MrsOvertonsWindow · 09/10/2022 15:20

Ignore them. I'm past caring about those who care so little for women's rights and child safeguarding. As the Mermaids threads clearly demonstrate, there's a huge problem with certain adults "queering childhood" and it's interesting that engineer and bug are gleefully all over this thread but crickets on the safeguarding children threads

Tells you all you need to know.

100%.

I think there's a lot of cognitive dissonance and peer pressure. I'm on the periphery of an online community which attracts a fair few 'be kind' types, and there's a section where people can post anonymously. Someone asked what it is that JKR has actually said that's so bad - for a direct quotation - and the response was that the anonymous poster had to be a 'transphobic troll' who was deliberately trying to annoy people. Nobody answered the question.

Same community, a poster known for bothering other people and being creepy declared he was non-binary. Someone suggested (again, anonymously) that maybe he might just be saying it to deflect criticism - to get into the group that can't be criticised. They were called a transphobe too. But it's interesting that these posters exist - you'd never know it, from looking at the non-anonymous posts.

If someone doubts the narrative, but thinks that doing so means they're not left-wing, or progressive, or a nice person, then they're not only going to try to suppress those thoughts but to react badly to anyone else around them who expresses them.
