Who would you like to see come out as GC?

There are a few outspoken women, who I secretly daydream they’re GC. Top of my list would be Oprah. I’d be thrilled if she was a closet GCer. She would shut up all those people who spout crap like “TWAW just like black women are women” and other guff. But in reality, I doubt this will happen.

Also on my list, in no particular order is
Jenner Lawrence, Sharon Horton (I know she’s friends with Aisling Bea so it’s unlikely), Meryl Streep. I’ll add a few more names when I remember.

I think Carrie Fisher would have been GC, she was very smart and understood the issues women face.

And Victoria Wood too, who had a good handle on how size and class issues impacted woman (I miss VW, so incredibly talented).

Who would you love to see talk out about this?

Jo Brand, Victoria Coren Mitchell, Nigella Lawson, Clare Balding, Ian McKellern — all the people who've sat comfortably on the fence and tried to pretend nothing's happening in order to earn a few more million.

I think it's a bit unfair to say sitting on the fence about people who aren't political as part of their public self.
And if their career will be ruined if 'cancelled' I can see why keeping quiet seems the best option.
It is like current sportswomen not speaking out because they fear for funding or team selection.

MPs on the other hand are positively paid to speak up...

Kathy Bates - strong woman.

Yes, like Jo Brand — strong women who've kept their heads down and said nothing. Hugely disappointing.

Look at yourselves, fangirling celebs you imagine are as intolerant as you. What lovely people you all are.

The irony re the intolerance part Grin

Never in the history of the world has there been a less tolerant people than the TRAs.

Charlie Brooker and Sacha Baron Cohen would be amazing. I can't see that don't see the bullshit gaslighting behind all this. Some female comedians (as they all seem to be handmaidens) and gay men too.
I think Miranda Hart would be, there were a bunch of jokes in Miranda about people assuming she was a cross dressing man. Victoria cohen Mitchell surely is, she's so super clever, badass feminist, and one of those of famous people you convince yourself you'd be great friends with if you ever met.
I'm sure there are many more famous people that are GC but have watched what happened to jk Rowling and are in fear of being cancelled.

MorrisZapp · 06/10/2022 08:41

Gary Lineker, David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.

FiveMins · 06/10/2022 08:28

Come on Labour Party it's so annoying. Also having just this vile government being GC makes the rest of us look bad as it looks like we align with them.

FKATondelayo · 06/10/2022 08:18

Also like Billie Eilish, Zara Larsson has spoken out against porn, which are somewhat contiguous with GC views though not necessarily aligned. It's good to see Gen Z icons starting to have some critical thinking about 'sex positive' culture.

bellinisurge · 06/10/2022 08:18

Harry Styles' "lovely open hearted" fans in Glasgow heckled Mitski because she is "different". Also Wolf Alice in Belgium (I think). I saw HS with Mitski as supporting Manchester. She's a Kate Bush/Bjork style singer and she was fucking awesome. What's not to love if you are an open minded kind of person.
Shows me how fucking cultish they are to heckle someone like that.
The point I'm making is that Harry Styles is probably afraid of upsetting such fans by being old-fashioned gender nonconforming but believing in biology.

Sorry to break it to you, but no. John Waters pretty much is open minded to everyone except JKRowling per his recent NYTimes interview, ironically titled, "John Waters Is Ready to Defend the Worst People in the World"

'Everyone' apparently, like history tells us time and again, does not include women who refuse to toe the line.

"I have a thing about who I would cancel: J.K. Rowling. Give her some Preparation H for that transphobia. What’s the matter with her?"

This was said in the same breath defending Johnny Depp.

OFGS. Honestly you'd think he'd tell it like it is instead of kowtowing to the mainstream. I guess that his main income is musical of Hairspray so he has to be in the cult to be accepted in theatreland.

Julia Davies - hasn't she said in an interview she has views that would see her cancelled if she mentioned them? So has Joan Collins.

oviraptor21 · 06/10/2022 08:07

Yay for Nazanin Z-R!

Couple more

Adele
Greta Thunberg - may take some doing!

ThatCheeseIsMine · 06/10/2022 07:52

I love how the Twitter thread about this this thread has turned into a similar string of speculations about who would/would not be GC. And why not? It’s OK for either side of the debate to speculate. But the difference is, people don’t get death and rape threats for declaring their support for gender ideology, and many do it because they feel compelled to or to get woke points, not because they actually believe it.

TeenDivided · 06/10/2022 07:51

I think/hope that a good proportion of people mentioned will be GC but have been quietly keeping their heads below the parapet (and who could blame them).

I wish there was a secret society they could all join and then do a mass coming out - safety in numbers. It must be hard as many will fear for their livelihoods, but the BBC/other media can't block all of them.

I second Billy Eilish. She’s pretty awesome, sensible head on her shoulders and when she spoke out about the harms of porn, young people listened. She has over 100 million followers on Instagram.

I’d say Taylor Swift would have the same impact on her 220 million Instagram followers, but she doesn’t seem to be intellectually equal to Eilish.

I think someone like Aurora might be good from that generation. But I suspect it's unlikely.

Not as unlikely as Oprah, though. She's never seen woo she didn't like.

chilling19 · 06/10/2022 01:31

NotBadConsidering · 06/10/2022 00:57

Of course George Michael would be GC. He was sensible and intelligent, he’d be like James Dreyfus. Can you imagine George being told to expect to encounter a “gay man with a vagina” while out cruising? He’d put that down straight away.

Delphinium20 · 06/10/2022 00:42

FKATondelayo · 05/10/2022 23:16

I hope Scarlett Johansson might be GC - based on nothing but her getting fired from that 'trans' film by TRAs, the fact she sued Disney so doesn't really care much for toeing the line and also she isn't bothered about having the 'correct' opinions.

Saying that she's probably got pronouns on insta so what do I know.

And I definitely think John Waters has to be. He has to BE.

LightDrizzle · 06/10/2022 00:40

Graham Norton (unlikely)
Harriet Harman
Harry Styles would be brilliant!
Joan Bakewell
Grace Dent

You’d have to be incredibly brave to do this when it could lose you your livelihood doing something you are passionate about, not to mention being publicly reviled as a bigot.

J.K. Rowling’s treatment is a massive disincentive ☹️

Toseland · 06/10/2022 00:23

Ooh deja-vu - we had a thread like this a few years ago.
All women but especially Joanna Lumley

JohnsShirt · 06/10/2022 00:16

Smilelesstalkmore · 05/10/2022 21:12

Pretty sure Harry Styles has appeared with a trans flag etc at some point, but I love the fact that he has never claimed to be anything other than a bloke who likes flamboyant clothes.

He has, but not that recently and most of the stuff he has onstage is thrown by the fans so not his as such.
I've seen him with the original pride flag more this past year.
He definitely mentioned women, clearly meaning AHF over the US abortion ban.

TimeforZeroes · 06/10/2022 00:11

RE: Julian Barrett - not sure how well the “I’ve got a Mangina!” sketch will have aged or how sympathetic that makes him look to TRAs…

TimeforZeroes · 06/10/2022 00:07

Sarah Solemani
Daisy May Cooper

Its got to br Kier Starmer. I can't won't Tory as that goes against everything I believe in.

I will vote Labout but unhappy at their stance re this. So I hope they clarify the position- and I doubt they are far off!
