Long twitter thread here. She's had her electronic devices seized too, and has been accused of being certain posters on Kiwi Farms and Mumsnet

@BernardBlacksWineIceLolly and @BreakWindandFire sorry to tag you but she's been accused of being you!

We all know who this will be, but as Caroline says, please don't speculate/discuss them.

she's anti gay marriage

This glosses over it a bit. Of course this doesn't mean she should be treated unfairly, but at least call it what it is. She isn't just "anti gay marriage" she is anti gay people being parents, thinks gay people are sinful, thinks Disney had a gay agenda, thinks kids will somehow be harmed by learning that being gay thing (remember how outraged she was about the gay penguins at London Zoo). It's not as simple as "Oh I just don't want gay people to marry" she's be quite happy if gay people just didn't exist at all.

And yes she's Catholic, but so is my partner with an Irish heritage and he doesn't hate gay people

Does the pope hate gay people then?

This is terrifying. I disagree with many of CF's opinions too, but in this country you don't get arrested for disagreeing with me. I'm not sure what the Police are playing at here because I don't think that simply having unpleasant or contentious opinions should be a Police matter. Death and rape threats absolutely but anything else no. This is high inappropriate

SnapeAlways · 04/10/2022 15:09

CF here. Changed name because I had been posting on another school/ASD thread that could be outing and because I’ve been listening to HP6 with DD.

I thought I was legally well versed but I was led up the path in terms of giving passwords so help would be useful.

I gave the passwords because I was told I have no choice. I didn’t want to make their job any easier but actually I am really relaxed about the police having my devices, although my daughter not so much.

If the police needed to seize devices they should have issued a warrant to search during the day when most of the kids were at school & invited me in for interview.

Arrest was totally unnecessary. My solicitor is on the case.

I disclosed I had an anxiety disorder when booked in. I think on discharge I believed sarge had asked whether I intended to self harm when I got home, but I heard “are you going to have self harm thoughts when you get home.”

So when I said yes, he thought I meant I was going to self harm. It was late, I was discombobulated. I was really upset because when I was leaving the house, my DD was beginning to get distressed and I just felt so awful for her and hopeless.

He got very cross and said in that case I am
going to section you and I said well I was giving an honest answer. He said right take her back to the cells and to me he said “you need to think about your answer, if you are telling me you are going to harm yourself.”

I said that no I wasn’t going to harm myself, but of course after what’s happened I might well have thoughts but I wouldn’t do anything and anyway my husband was at home…

Then he let me go.

This country has a veneer of freedom, in truth it's a dystopian shithole. I'm really sorry this happened to Carolyn.

I wonder if we could get MNHQ to do a webchat with a QC about women's rights concerning arrests/cautions/vexatious complaints, etc. They could provide a detailed checklist on what to do when faced with a police officer at the door; an officer determined to gain entry; an officer casually referencing sectioning, etc because this thread shows that some posters seem to think random Googles are the same as understanding the law and their rights. It isn't.
Also, is it possible to have a group litigation order against the police? Women need to mobilise collectively around these particular issues with the police.

A thread has been started in site stuff regarding this.

If anyone else thinks it is a good idea, please could you add your comments to that thread.

Thanks!

Hugocat1 · 04/10/2022 15:00

It doesn’t matter if people find her views unpalatable it’s still unacceptable what happened. And she has my full support.

But society, lately has been turning the other cheek when injustices have been done because it’s people they don’t align with or agree with politically.

One day it maybe you on the receiving end and how will you feel then?

By the way - half of my family are Irish catholic. I’m not. Doesn’t make them monsters that they have a protected religious belief. We are not all the Borg with hive think.

Sophoclesthefox · 04/10/2022 13:27

This is extremely worrying.

Am aghast at some people here clearly feeling that this is Ok, because they think Caroline has dreadful opinions. Am less aghast at the whataboutery over what is a minor part of the story re the sectioning, as that is very par for the course on a thread like this, about a specific named woman being targeted. I can spot at least one poster who can only do nit picky sophistry, most often on threads about certain women, through whatever name change they have, and is utterly incapable of engaging with any substantive matter. Best ignored.

There is much that I disagree with Caroline about. It seems that the absolute baseline of acceptable human interaction is that she is entitled to her viewpoint, and to be able to articulate it without being persecuted.

This.

I don't agree with much of what CF apparently stands for,, but she's entitled to her opinions.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 04/10/2022 13:09

@MNHQ
This is a brilliant idea.

Please could you do this? This is something that EVERYONE should know, not just women.

Remember - when you teach a man, you have taught a man. When you teach a woman, you have taught her whole family.

This is indeed a brilliant idea.

’(A) man who thinks the police can be summoned upon demand’

As someone has already said, it seems that the Surrey Police can be summoned on demand. It’s amazing how anyone can get this level of response from them. This woman couldn’t get them to investigate properly.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10857503/Coroner-slams-Surrey-Police-failing-protect-mother-four-murdered-estranged-husband.html

This is dreadful!

Heartbreaking and totally preventable death of this poor woman - and the coroner has made no bones about the failings of the Surrey Police. I hope her family sues the backside off them - there are now four children without a mother, and doubtless traumatised by what has happened.

Thelnebriati · 04/10/2022 14:42

So many of these threads are good practice for spotting logical fallacies in the wild.

TheClogLady · 04/10/2022 14:39

KettrickenSmiled · 04/10/2022 14:20

Of course it altered it, as another PP pointed out.

Talking of whataboutery & lying - tell us again how disliking one woman's homophobia & anti-abortion stance equals misogyny? You've created a straw man out of nothing, because you think everybody should be "supporting" Farrow, & that not to do so is somehow being against all women.

What are you on about?

Are you trying to say it’s acceptable to arrest a woman because you dislike Catholicism?

Because as far as I was aware, belief, including belief in the teachings of the Catholic Church (eg no abortion, no same sex marriage) is just as protected a characteristic as sexual orientation?

Are we about to usher in a new era of catholic persecution because the Pope is an anti SJW?

Helleofabore · 04/10/2022 14:39

Yes. Else we might get into recounting past deeds still unanswered ....

RoyalCorgi · 04/10/2022 14:33

ImherewithBoudica · 04/10/2022 13:07

Oh she's Catholic and privileged?!

Burn the witch! Get the pitchforks!

Jeez there really are people born out of their time, who'd have bloody loved the witch trials, or the Guillotine era, or the Inquisition.

It's absolutely astonishing that some people can't grasp the concept of a principle that has to apply to everyone.

Imagine if we said, well, burglary is wrong, but it's only wrong if it happens to people we approve of. If some horrid anti-abortionist gets burgled, then it doesn't matter.

Apparently arresting someone on the basis of a false and malicious accusation is only bad if that person is someone we like. If it's someone we don't like, then it's fine.

I seriously wonder how it's possible to be that dim and still function on a daily basis.

Pixiedust1234 · 04/10/2022 14:29

@KettrickenSmiled i think the support being asked is for a person being arrested for allegedly posting a meme. The way its been done.

Not whether they are worthy or have/not a penis or because its not a group cause. Try focusing on the what and not the who.

endofthelinefinally · 04/10/2022 14:28

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 04/10/2022 12:17

What are you talking about? You're trying to say it doesn't matter because Caroline is middle class?

No, I don't think that's what the poster is saying at all.
I think they're saying that people get arrested all the time, say from minority groups, but they don't have the privileges, the platforms, and emotional support threads to possibly gather support, or to sway, there's no collective outrage for them.
I could be wrong though, hopefully the poster will be along to say soon

IME there is a huge amount of outrage about the conduct of the police. From young black men being shot by police, to young black children being strip searched, young gay men being murdered and police not bothering to investigate, to young ethnic minority people reporting crime and being accused of being the perpetrators, to women reporting stalking, being ignored by police or fined for wasting police time and ending up dead. Girls being raped, spiked and police telling them they asked for it by wearing the wrong clothes, being out in the evening. You name it. I have experienced a couple of the above examples and have friends who have too. We all complain, write to our MPs and so on. Unfortunately, what with being middle aged women, we tend to be ignored.

KettrickenSmiled · 04/10/2022 14:20

beastlyslumber · 04/10/2022 13:23

Yes, @KettrickenSmiled I didn't address your whataboutery and lying. Others did, however, so no need to go over it again here.

I mean, I'm not sure why I shouldn't pull out one part of your comment to respond to. You can call it 'selective quoting' if you want to, but in actual fact, it's just 'quoting'. It's not as if you said anything in the rest of your comment which altered the meaning of the words I quoted.

InsertPunHere · 04/10/2022 13:58

It's really scary, and she must have been so distressed. Poor Caroline

Lesserspotteddogfish · 04/10/2022 13:54

RoyalCorgi · 04/10/2022 10:45

If you think about it, anyone could complain to the police about hateful or insulting content on social media. There's a ton of it. I do wish the people who I see on Twitter and elsewhere gloating about Caroline's situation would have the sense to realise that they too could be arrested on the flimsiest pretext if someone takes a dislike to them. However, these people are generally very stupid, so that won't happen.

Somehow I don’t think the police would bother with any of their views, no matter how abusive they were. They only seem to respond to a particular view point. As someone else said, it is all extremely sinister.

ArabellaScott · 04/10/2022 13:53

'Also, is it possible to have a group litigation order against the police? Women need to mobilise collectively around these particular issues with the police'

That's an interesting idea. I'd like a body that women could call that could provide legal advice in the event of harassment/wrongful arrest etc.

Pixiedust1234 · 04/10/2022 13:44

Pineappleflowers · 04/10/2022 10:48

The police are quite limited in when they can legally arrest someone. Great summary by lawyers here: hnksolicitors.com/advice/necessity-to-arrest-explained/

I’d be interested to know if the arrest of Ms Farrow was legal and on what grounds the police felt the arrest was “necessary”.

Thanks for linking that but now my anxiety is through the roof

Reasonable suspicion that the person being arrested has committed an offence, has attempted to do so or is planning to do so

Wtaf does that mean? How delayed does the planning need to be, minutes, hours, months?

knittingaddict · 04/10/2022 13:44

I am furious about this.

Not just because of the event in itself, but because of our families recent experience of police inactivity in the face of real crimes. My adult daughter was the victim over many years. When reported it took the police months to even request, yes request, the criminal's phone. Predictably it was long gone by then. I don't think they even looked for the hard drive, let alone barge into his house and look for it. Needless to say the CPS decided not to take it further.

My faith in the police is zero.

Agree...or ask Fair Cop to come and do it, along with a Q&A @MNHQ

I like Fair Cop and admire what they do but iirc they're a lobby group. I think it might be better if it was an independent iyswim.
I've started a thread in Site Stuff about it so anyone who thinks it's a good idea or has suggestions could post there. I don't want to derail here. Smile
