Do I now need to boycott Wagamama

I like Wagamama. However I spotted this in a DM article about Mermaids today.

"Meanwhile, Wagamama is currently running a similar fundraiser, according to its website which states 25p from every power juice sold will be donated to Mermaids along with 20 per cent of its profits from their bespoke menu."

Why are firms getting into this agree with our politics if you want to buy our services thing. There is no way I want to buy anything that leads to a donation to Mermaids. Wagamama please reconsider.

FYI they are owned by The Restaurant Group. Assuming Wagamama are captured by the gender ideologists, it’s probably best to direct complaints to the parent company.

SugarNspices · 29/09/2022 06:46

I'm glad I read this because I haven't been for a while. I won't be returning either. It's made me think I should look into where my money is going. I will never support mermaids!

Duckskitbank · 29/09/2022 06:36

Tone deaf. No more Wagamama for us.
All the lols at Wagabirthingperson…at least until next pride month when they actually run with that!

Chillisquid · 29/09/2022 00:25

They were supporting gendered intelligence years ago.
They've done pride well in the past, making restaurants safe spaces for people to meet before parades, that was along side doing a month raising money for mental health charities, this support for mermaids seems to be going on for longer than other campaigns.
Emails to complain above.
Or Twitter.
I'm gutted a brand I really loved and put a lot in to has fallen for this toxic mess for no reason at all.

ILikeDungs · 29/09/2022 00:05

Do I now need to boycott Wagamama?

Yes.

And fuck them, how could they have put such little thought into this
Mermaids encourage children onto the path to transition
with balloons and fireworks and hazzahs
and Wagamama are up with that??
Have they thought this through AT ALL?

Good idea we do need to do this. I was unaware of this as been avoiding the news for a while now due to it making me thoroughly depressed! But I too will not use Wagamamas anymore after hearing this. My money my choice where to spend it. Why is trans rights absolutely everywhere now? Why is nothing else supported? Why does it seem like the only important issue that even businesses seem to be involved in? I’m genuinely confused as to how all this has become so rammed down our throats suddenly. They seem to be the only people who matter nowadays but surely they are such a minority?!?

It does seem bizarre @Kentgirl2525
Like there's no other causes or charities to support. And 20% of profits is a LOT!
Why don't they support something local (to individual branches) or food bank or something environmental FFS.
Let's hope they find their profits plummet. Our family are partial to the occasional Wagamama but won't be going again.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 28/09/2022 23:06

No more Wagamama for us either. I'm not emailing them because I'll probably get a 'We don't want your bigoted business anyway, you evil TERF' type response. But I will not spend my money there.

Chillisquid · 28/09/2022 22:59

Please email them or tweet them to let them know how bad this looks, there is plenty of evidence.
More annoying that there are so many decent charities out there desperate for cash right now.
India Willoughby on twitter today telling wagamama and mermaids to sue someone who's accused them if child abuse.
I would absolutely love to see that come to court.
I'm sure wagamamas lawyers have got more sense than the diversity lead.

Chillisquid · 28/09/2022 22:55

HR, not sure if this is allowed?
[email protected]

Chillisquid · 28/09/2022 22:53

They might do due diligence, they might not, looks like not; but they are paying a non binary inclusion and wellbeing partner what £30/£40k a year, if he's advising to do this, how much pushback would that really get?
I'm so disappointed, I used to love the brand and it's values and it was a good place to work for a long time.
I'm not sure how long this 'proud beyond pride' is going on for, seems to be at least two months already which is unusual, is it permanent?
So glad I got out at exactly the right moment.

Lottapianos · 28/09/2022 18:08

'Imagine doing this in 2022 as the court cases mount.'

Exactly! FFS, do they not do any due diligence about which charities they support?

KittenKong · 28/09/2022 18:00

Yup the forget that the people walking are those older (mostly) women taking their kids and their kids pals…

We used to go to Wagamama monthly but haven't been for some time because my family care about the safety of children.

I think we need to TELL businesses this sort of thing: an email saying "I used to spend £100 a month regularly at your restaurant in X [town]. Since your policy to supply binders to underage girls, my family will be spending our money elsewhere."

Exactly, I was going to say the same thing. Slightly hypocritical of me because some of the places I'm currently boycotting have been on my to-do list to write to for a VERY long time 😳but realistically, unless we write/email/tweet and TELL them all that we are boycotting them and why (and if possible, how MUCH custom/money they are losing from us), they might not even notice we've stopped using them at all (unless there was a VERY big drop in overall sales), or if they do, they may have absolutely no idea WHY their sales have dropped, and mistakenly attribute it to all sorts of wrong reasons. So every time, we should be getting a clear message out there that we're unhappy with them, and why! (Promise I will try to do some of mine later!).

Thelnebriati · 28/09/2022 14:15

DS and his mates stopped using them because of this. I'd really like to be able to just buy food without any politics attached to it.

Botsy · 28/09/2022 13:59

An acquaintance of mine knows the CEO and this doesn't surprise me, he's fully on-board with gender ideology and the manchester restaurant has a massive rainbow flag with the trans triangles.

Needmoresleep · 28/09/2022 12:43

I agree but Wagamama don't make it easy. The CEO email above is probably the way to go.

More generally firms seem to have outsourced customer feedback to market research firms, as if to prevent direct communication with customers. Yesterday's train journey was two hours without wifi, a regular occurrence, but the only place to complain, as far as the app went, as some 20 page survey which wanted to know my views on the chocolate vending machine at the station and my gender identity. I then could not show my ticket as the app suddenly asked me to log in again, so a telling off from the guard because apparently their wifi is always crap, so passengers, without being told, should not rely on the app, which they encourage you to use, but instead download it to a Googlewallet, whatever that is.

The two hours were spent trying to complain to Wagamama and SWR on a phone with poor signal. I doubt they will listen. Wagamama will listen to their non binary diversity and inclusion office instead as they clearly felt this was a necessary hire, and they will feel it is important to show they can effect "change" within the business - even at the expense of pissing off customers.

I so want to tell so many firms why I don't use them any more. Mostly around their virtue signalling, but also, say, Tesco, who expect me to pay more for my meal deal because I don't want them to be able to collect data about me. The silver lining is that I am saving money. No more Wagamama treats when I am out and about. The sandwich from a local sandwich shop will be cheaper. In time Mermaids star will have faded, but I will not easily forgive those that were complicit.

Think this is the non binary man who had to do the obligatory making womens day all about trans women on the company Facebook group

Ffs only a man (binary/non binary/has a penis person) could possibly think this is a good idea and a decent thing to do.

RentingIsTheWayToHumpf · 28/09/2022 12:30

Will they be changing their name to Wagaperson?
😂😂

We enjoy food at Wagamamas but will give it a miss now. Can anyone engage with them on Twitter and challenge?

They are hiring LGBT inclusion mangers everywhere. Diversity and inclusion is high on the agenda of every organisation and large business in this country. Recruitment is currently not merit based, it's ideology driven.

Needmoresleep · 28/09/2022 11:46

Wagacervixhaver...

Has a certain ring to it. (Or Wagacismama?)

I tried to complain but they make it complicated. No obvious email address and you need to list a branch and time. No option to make a complaint about their corporate policy. Wagamama is a go to place when I am in a strange town and want something reliable, so I don't really have a local branch.

Anyway this is the generic first response:

"we are looking into your feedback now and we will get back to you with a more personal response. we’ll be sure to address your concerns, answer your questions or thank you for any positive comments you may have left, and your feedback will also be used to make sure we’re improving on everything we offer you and all our customers"

Lets hope they genuinely want to improve service to ALL their customers. A family orientated chain donating to Mermaids is obscene.
