Poor girl, she supports mixed sex changing because "everyone feels included" but she recommends that lone females don't use it for their own safety.
Using a fitting room shouldn't be like walking home in the dark, if you need your wits about you then women have lost something.

Women are good at apologising for their own oppression.

I hope this woman somehow encounters some brave, bold women who allow her to consider - without judgement - why she was scared, how she could counter that, and what it takes to help build a world where all of our daughters can feel confident living in it.

She is correct that we can't do this alone. Women have strength when they band together with other women.

ArabellaScott · 25/09/2022 10:06

Women: Keep yourselves covered up. Stay home. Respect males' needs to use any changing room, any space, any toilet they need.

This is an example of what sounds like cis (and I don't like using that term) men being asses. This isn't a trans issue.

it is a trans issue though innit?

what does a transwoman look like? I don't fucking know. how are shop staff supposed to gatekeep the women's changing rooms when any hairy six footer who feels a bit ladylike today should be allowed in?

How does a transwoman transform from male-bodied person that most women do not want to share intimate spaces with to one that they consider safe?

When they declare they feel more like a woman than a man? When they grow out their hair? When they wear a skirt and stilettos? When they take hormones that make them cry a bit more? When they cut off parts of their anatomy or have prosthetic breasts inserted? When they change their birth certificate?

That's precisely why we want boundaries around single sex spaces. By allowing unisex places, any male can come in, because predators will take advantage, whether they have a gender identity or not.

I think the only acceptable unisex changing room scenario would be like good unisex toilets. Large, floor to ceiling enclosed and open up in public view. Not around a corner, tightly packed and with gaps.

I have complained to Primark in 2019 a few times about an incident where a man came and sat directly outside my teen’s cubicle and I quickly jumped up the close the gap of the woman’s curtain beside my teens as she was oblivious to the man’s presence. I was told my complaint will not be escalated and there was no further process available to me.

Primark know. Primark as a corporate actively don’t care, despite that their staff may be aware . Their customer service online seem to have been told to shut down complaints about the changing rooms.

It just needs more people to actively complain via social media like this.

MrsJamin · 25/09/2022 09:12

Poor woman. She's been sold a lie: be kind, be inclusive, transwomen are women, share your space, life will be better for everyone, including you. It's a lie and she's realised this. It's clear she's very fearful in the video. I would never use unisex changing rooms as they shouldn't exist.

The only way to guarantee your safety and privacy is to try clothes on at home. Sad but true.

No, it's to have single sex changing rooms again.

That still wouldn't guarantee safety unfortunately, due to the number of employees on the shop floor being slashed by retail most changing rooms no longer have a dedicated staff member overseeing them.

StopStartStop · 25/09/2022 09:03

That's it, isn't it? 'Mixed sex' means 'women stay at home'.

itwasntmetho · 25/09/2022 09:02

It kind of is a trans issue, what was the reason for unisex changing rooms?
Who needed to feel included?
The only acceptable way is a fixed door which covers floor to ceiling without gaps due to the number of men who have filmed or taken pictures under the door, then that wouldn't even be unisex, that would be individual changing rooms.

I fully support unisex changing rooms but only when the doors are fully lockable like they are in unisex swimming changing rooms.

I'm sure we have all used changing rooms where the curtains don't fully close - I'm uncomfortable using them at the best of times but if there were men walking around I wouldn't use them.

We all know if a curtain is shut, the room is occupied. So you don't accidentally open them.

Amrapaali · 25/09/2022 06:56

I don't understand. Don't the cubicles have proper doors and latches? I thought those thick heavy curtains were a thing ofthe past?

I'm an exclusive online shopper and haven't been near a changing room for eons. I may be talking bollocks

The trouble is, in a unisex changing room (or toilet) this still allows men to install cameras.

Deliriumoftheendless · 25/09/2022 08:20

When I was much much younger I remember a bloke trying to touch me up as he squeezed past me and I felt embarrassed and guilty so I apologised, because being touched up was my fault. That’s the message that was still hanging around in the 80s. That it was my fault he wanted to touch me up, by having a body he wanted to get his hands on.

this was very much an idea that was still hanging around back then, stinking the place up. Women are for touching. It’s your fault.

later, and after exposure to feminism and the idea women and girls were people in their own right I understand HE should’ve apologised to me. Or better yet, keep his hands to himself.

years later I thought we had amplified the message that we are not responsible for what men do- yet this young woman says she apologised when the men walked in. She said sorry for being there when they wanted to (as if her being there wasn’t the bloody reason they wanted in).

theres a whole loads of young women who are struggling to understand the motivation of men because they’ve been told equality is not assuming bad faith on the part of potential predators. Be kind, NAMALT, it’s your fault if a man walks in to your changing room, take a friend in or change at home.

BlueBrush · 25/09/2022 08:03

This is heartbreaking, and I'm sure this is just one example amongst many of a young woman having to reconcile these conflicting feelings of "be kind" but "i don't feel safe". She says she is all for unisex changing rooms because "then everyone feels included", but doesn't understand that not feeling she can use a changing room on her own is excluding her as a woman. Her advice to others not to use the changing room on your own wasn't specifically aimed at women and girls, but statistically, it's women and girls who tend to be the victims and men and boys who tend to be the perpetrators.

I don't like the idea of mixed sex changing rooms or toilets to be honest.

I don't really know where it ends. Recently started to feel like we're all being gaslit into the idea there are more than 2 sexes. Which there biologically isn't.

I don't particularly care which category you put yourself in but I don't want to get changed or go to the toilet with men wandering around and I'm sure a lot of men would feel the same.

Decent men do feel this way, yes. There are more decent men than we realise sometimes saying they do not want to be put in a position where their presence is alarming to women.
These policies make women and decent men uncomfortable.

No sadly most places still have curtains and rainbows

Clymene · 25/09/2022 07:01

No they don't have doors. They have curtains

As you say @Amrapaali you haven't been near a changing room in years

She said she supports mixed sex changing rooms because she knows she will be denounced as transphobic if she doesn't. She has to do this public cognitive dissonance to avoid being cast out.

This is what trans ideology has done to young women.

Igmum · 25/09/2022 06:29

Poor girl. Part of me really hopes that Primark do get sued, but that would mean more women being harmed.

DworkinWasRight · 25/09/2022 02:46

Interesting, though not surprising, that Primark staff told her it had happened before. They’re opening themselves up to the possibility of a lawsuit by knowingly putting women at risk.

pinheadlarry · 25/09/2022 02:00

Im really worried for the younger girls and kids who will be targeted in the changing rooms, there needs to be a changing room attendant there at least
