Solidarity with the brave women of Iran

Just reading/watching about the tragic death of Mahsa Amini following her arrest for incorrectly wearing the hijab. These women are so incredibly brave.

"Anti-government protests are taking place across Iran following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on 16 September. Amini was detained in Tehran by a paramilitary unit that enforces Islamic dress codes after she reportedly didn’t wear the hijab correctly. She fell into a coma under unknown circumstances while in custody and later died, prompting outrage at religious police and security forces. However, despite its scale, analysts and diplomats are doubtful that the protests will lead to any significant change."

Another horrific account of what these brave women are facing:

Hopefully she is safely home and not being punished by the regime.

I really want to do something - I feel so strongly about this. But I am at a complete loss over what to do that will make any positive difference. Or even what our government could do to help.
I am so awed by their bravery but devastated at the loss of their precious lives.

And, of course, last year Iran was elected onto the UN's Commission on the Status of Women, the principal team handling “the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women”. FFS!

Oh god, I’d forgotten that. What a travesty. The UN having a laugh at the oppression and murder of women.

It's just such an awful situation. Those women and girls are incredibly brave

Andrew Doyle, on Free Speech Nation, interviewing 2 Iranian women's rights activists taking about the situation in Iran for women living under the Islamic Republic. They also mention that LGBTQ and Feminists groups in the west are largely silent on their struggle.

Glad to see this thread is back - it's not been opening for the last few days.

Amazing that the main Iranian evening TV news broadcast got hacked the other day. And brave women chanting at the president, too! www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-63188795

FemaleAndLearning · 10/10/2022 09:45

I wonder where this thread had gone. What a strange idea to move it to chat. This is clearly about sex and gender. Glad it's back where it belongs.
These women and girls are incredible. I think I'm brave going to Let Women Speak events these women and girls are beyond brave.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/10/2022 11:30

I think it's back on the S&G board

donquixotedelamancha · 08/10/2022 10:59

@KimMumsnet please could you explain why you've moved this thread to the low-traffic board?

Clearly women in Iran are subjugated because of their sex which is why OP code that board in the first place.

These boards attract different groups so it would be nice to be able to carry the discussion on in the place it started.

Find and follow 'My stealthy freedom' on social media. The woman who runs it said this was a good way to help - keep sharing the stories of the women and girls fighting this.

You could write to the Iranian embassy, perhaps, too.

And some women have been posting their cut off hair to the embassies in their countries in solidarity.

StillWeRise · 06/10/2022 19:07

does anyone know f any solidarity actions or other ways we can help?

Well yes, I imagine men will use anything slightly out of place as an excuse to terrorise women.

Lougle · 06/10/2022 21:26

I was listening to the Jeremy Vine show today and a woman was talking about this (didn't catch her name when I turned it on). She was saying that many of the arrests of women are nothing to do with what they're wearing, but more that they aren't wearing it correctly. Imagine being arrested because your scarf has slipped and revealed your hair. It's just dreadful.

Runningintolife · 06/10/2022 21:13

Women and Girls a force to be reckoned with.
