There were ushers at both shows I have been to see - at Summerhall and also the one discussed on this thread. I didn't get to pick a seat.

PeriodBro · 24/08/2022 12:16

So - where are we? A whole row of Jen Ives' audience failed to laugh?

As I said, has anyone reported this hate crime?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/08/2022 12:07

PeriodBro you are very naughty Grin

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/08/2022 12:06

An Ives fan who’d actually attrnded then commented that they’d been laughing but not many other people were - which they seemed to think was definitely evidence of a transphobic plot.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/08/2022 12:05

Apparently the Friend of Jen Ives tweeter misunderstood about the row, it wasn't the front if anything happened at all

No, the problem is the headline implies people had an issue with a set about vulvas and vaginas, when, in fact, they had an issue with her transphobic views. It’s really not that complicated.

Please could you outline her "trabsphonic views"? Screenshots and/or links would be helpful too. TIA!

Helleofabore · 24/08/2022 11:58

or that the person starting the story (who admits they weren’t there & got a key point wrong) has another agenda.

Yes. I suspected this as soon as I read there was absolutely nothing else on twitter about this 'transphobic abuse' Ives was alleged to be receiving. And the final tweet rallying up support for Ives' show.

But hey, any old stick will do for some posters won't it?

Watching that clip of Ives. So not funny

and you can’t book seats at the fringe. The ushers tell you which place to sit mostly

They don't really have ushers except at the bigger venues and the show has sold out. You can't book a seat but it wouldn't be difficult to get front row if you wanted at this sort of show.

And yet.... you have not yet provided any evidence of her 'transphobic' views....

Nor acknowledged that you have no evidence that anyone in that front row had ulterior motives for attending Ives' show which seems to be not doing very well looking at those reviews.

You can keep on repeating that she is 'transphobic' but unless you provide evidence, we will continue to point out your credibility is very low.

WanOvaryKenobi · 24/08/2022 11:45

Let's see what the general public says, shall we?

yougov.co.uk/topics/lifestyle/articles-reports/2022/07/20/where-does-british-public-stand-transgender-rights

Well, would you look at that. Most people believe in reality. That includes sex based rights.

Sazzasez · 24/08/2022 11:34

dull evening.

DadJoke · 24/08/2022 02:30

No one has a problem with shows about vulvas and vaginas - the headline is wrong.

The issue is that she is gender critical / transphobic.

I notice you’ve kept quiet about Jen Ives, also at Edinburgh who received transphobic abuse, and bunch of transphobes booked out the front row and sat in silence with their arms crossed.

You can’t reserve seats at the Fringe.

When people on Twitter pointed this out, and added that the show was filmed & included shots of the front row, the person posting about it said that it wasn’t the front tow but definitely another row. So... they weren’t there.

An Ives fan who’d actually attrnded then commented that they’d been laughing but not many other people were - which they seemed to think was definitely evidence of a transphobic plot.

We can conclude either that TERFs very generously decided to financially support a trans performer at the cost of a ticket & an awful full evening ... or that the person starting the story (who admits they weren’t there & got a key point wrong) has another agenda.

I note they also tweeted a request to vote for Ives for a comedy award which apparently you can vote for even if you didn’t see the show.

PSKeyboardwarrior · 24/08/2022 11:31

@DadJoke what views is it you found transphobic?

I swear one of these days this question will finally be answered. I am determined!

littlbrowndog · 24/08/2022 11:30

How’s she transphobic?

TheKeatingFive · 24/08/2022 11:25

when, in fact, they had an issue with her transphobic views.

There's nothing transphobic about her views and anyone who thinks there is, simply can't cope with scientific reality. Not her problem, our problem or anyone else's but their own.

DadJoke · 24/08/2022 11:22

So basically the problem is that she is an infidel and thou shalt not suffer sinners.

Which is beyond tedious and I cannot be bothered to engage with any more than the drunken twit who used to grab people in the university bar thirty years ago to tearfully demand "Are you saved?"

Your religion is your problem mate. Demanding that others genuflect at your personal altars is a bit daft really.

A quick google shows this:

FactsAreNotMean · 24/08/2022 10:07

Spitting on people for holding legally protected views = acceptable, cos she's transphobic. Not misogyny, just social justice in action.

Folding arms = vile transphobia

Right, cos that makes sense.

PeriodBro · 24/08/2022 10:01

'vile transphobia...

A group of people bought up an entire front row during her show that was being live streamed for Next Up and sat silent, arms crossed the whole time to intimidate her.'

Has anyone reported this hate crime?

Sorry I forgot to email you the Fringe Guidance Notes. Doh!

Here they are.

1 - Laughing at trans people is transphobic.
2 - Not laughing at trans people is also transphobic.
3 - Mentioning Jen Ives is transphobic.
4 - Also, not mentioning Jen Ives is transphobic.

I think that's the crux of it. Now run off and play and for the love of COD, try not to be transphobic today, please. I've got those notes laminated now and they cannot be changed.

Oh shit. I forgot 2.

1 - Laughing at trans people is transphobic.
2 - Not laughing at trans people is also transphobic.
3 - Mentioning Jen Ives is transphobic.
4 - Also, not mentioning Jen Ives is transphobic.
5 - Performing in the next room to a trans person is transphobic
6 - And by default, not performing in the next room to a trans person will also prove later in the thread to be transphobic.

Yet … Ives got one thing right. Ives obviously cannot feel empathy with the content in that clip, and from their actions so far.

Certainly no empathy for their own father.

TheClogLady · 24/08/2022 09:52

Another mumsnetter commented on Ives’ show on one of the other Elaine Miller threads. I’ve screenshotted it for simplicity.

if this thread has been hijacked into talking about trans comedians, then I would like to point out that Ives is not the only trans performer at this years fringe. I saw Andrew O’Neil’s previous solo show last year (friend of friends situation) and 85% of it was really good, with the last 15 minutes descending into student style ranty politics nonsense unbecoming for a person of Andrew’s age.

Andrew is doing two shows at the Fringe (and I admit, I did find myself wondering who ‘they’ are on reading the second flier, before remembering they is Andrew theyself)

so it anyone wants to see a trans comedian who is actually funny at least some of the time, I recommend Andrew, as Jen seems a bit crap.

Both Jen and Andrew are on Chortle’s list of ten trans comedians appearing on this year’s Fringe:

Well, DadJoke's line was funnier than any of Jen Ives'.

Sorry. The tweet is this for those not on twitter.

from Yiannis Cove

Please amplify this 🧵: One of the kindest and funniest people I know, Jen Ives, has been dealing with some truly vile transphobia during her debut Edinburgh Fringe show. Posters vandalised, flyers ruined, and then this week it escalate

A group of people bought up an entire front row during her show that was being live streamed for Next Up and sat silent, arms crossed the whole time to intimidate her. Obviously, this would get to anyone

She has someone performing in the room next to her at the same time who is doing a show about womanhood who has had an article published this week complaining she's being accused of transphobia for using free speech and obviously it's drawn more attention toward Jen's show

Why the venue placed them next to each other at the same time is baffling. Jen does not deserve to be going through this regardless. We need to show her our support. There are some actual hate crimes occurring here

and another tweet saying ‘go see the show and support Ives to stop the transphobes’.

Hmm
