Drag Queen Robert Clothier convicted (TW)

A drag queen named Robert Clothier (stage name Lady James) arranged a ‘liaison’ with a man and his two young children, for the purposes of a sexual encounter with the man and to assault/rape the children. It was a police sting. He has just been convicted and sentenced to 26 months in prison.

There is a difference of category between pantomime dames and modern ‘drag queens’. This isn’t theatre culture or acting; it’s a lifestyle, and a sexualised one.

I hope he serves every day of that time.

Trying to think of a word (that's in the spirit of the site) to describe adults determined that very young children must be exposed to adult performers who dress as extreme parodies of women with often sexualised dress and behaviour 🙄

Dodgy?

Philistine is too classy a word to describe people like yous.
Bigot fits perfectly.

@achillestoes

It's considered good manners on this board to check news stories seen on SM are legitimate/recent before posting.

Oh give over 🙄

achillestoes · 15/08/2022 12:32

And why when people don’t like their ‘art’ are they called ‘bigots’ and not ‘philistines’? If it’s just art, rather than an expression of identity?

If drag Queens don't have anything to do with sexual orientation, why are they a major part of pride events?

achillestoes · 15/08/2022 12:20

Looks like it, yes.

There's plenty of adult entertainment that children don't need exposure to. Healthy societies strive to protect children from many things they are just fine w/ adults partaking in! It's why we have ratings on violent and sexualized movies, it's why it's illegal in many countries to expose children to porn (imagine Porn Star Story Hour being introduced to the library!!!). It's why we don't take children to strip clubs or parties with drugs, despite many adults legally engaging in all of these things. Feminists are not bigoted against strippers or pot smokers, but weirdly, I've never had a stripper or a pot smoker call me a bigot for not bringing my kids round...strange, isn't it?

DarkDayforMN · 15/08/2022 09:19

Their sexuality has nothing to do with the art form they create

what a bizarre statement. You can’t really think that drag has nothing to do with sexuality. It’s just a freakish coincidence that drag queens are almost universally gay men?

ChagSameachDoreen · 15/08/2022 09:06

There are drag queens and kings out there that do readings for children in libraries, there is a children's cartoon (Drag Tots) there are books for children about drag queens.

But why? Why do toddlers and children need all this exposure to drag queens?

achillestoes · 15/08/2022 08:37

How can people be bigoted against art? Surely if it’s just people inhabiting a character, we’re just saying that particularly art form isn’t suitable for kids? What’s the big deal?

Trust me, we're aware

Who? You and your army of bigots?

It's not bigotry to think of the children

Also, if it’s an art form, I am at liberty to interpret it in any way I want. They can feel as comfortable as they like, and freedom of expression guarantees both their right to dress like that and my right to criticise the involvement of children in that performance.

@Blister

I agree. You can’t claim an ‘identity’ and then say you are inhabiting a character. Which is it?

Here's my issue with drag queen's and King's.
When i watch pantomime dames, i know these are actors putting on a show. I can see the difference between the man in the costume and the woman being portrayed.
When i meet the actor in real life, the actor dissociates from the character.

This was also my experience of drag in the past. Current day, drag queens however are different. you are supposed to think the character and actor are one. My reaction is the same as those who balk at the thought of a holy trinity. You either take it on faith grounds or refute it completely. The actor does not fully dissociate from the character and tends to carry bits of it around...

They don't behave like actors to me and there is an element of belief that needs to happen for it to be funny...

To me current drag queen is a show piggy backing on old credentials to sell a new kind of faith. It looks innocent on the face of it but it is this not-quite-there dishonesty that I can't stand.

‘There are drag queens and kings out there that do readings for children in libraries, there is a children's cartoon (Drag Tots) there are books for children about drag queens.’

We know.

‘Stop being so scared and educate yourself instead of thinking they are going to corrupt your children. Your backwards thinking will do that just fine.’

In what way?

OP posts:
achillestoes · 15/08/2022 06:45

@Alala2809

I think that’s exactly what it is. I have no issue at all with it as an art form for adult people.

Fucking Hell - what a backwards view on an art form.
Not all drag queens make sexual risky jokes, it's not about 'an expression of homosexuality'. Get out of the dark ages.
Their sexuality has nothing to do with the art form they create - it's self expression of a character they have created and feel comfortable in. Some are musicians, dancers, singers, presenters, comedians etc.
Everyone out there has the capability of being a predator, it doesn't matter what your job is. Dont lob them all in together because of a few bad apples.

Interesting that you’re so keen to promote a sexualised ‘art form’ around children.

Delphinium20 · 15/08/2022 05:38

Drag is adult entertainment. I have been to several, probably to shows that took place before a lot of you were born. I don't want to ban drag, just stay the fuck away from children and stop trying to pretend it's not ripe w/ misogyny.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/08/2022 05:20

Noone is forcing anyone to watch it if it's not your thing.

No, they just remove public services from you if you're not interested. We have been discussing on another thread how Leeds Libraries paid a performer £144 per show, and closed the library to all other people for the duration of the show.

Seriously, examine this underlying presumption that reading to groups of children is a sanctifying ordeal that renders anyone who does it beyond reproach. It's really not that arduous a thing to do and there are plenty of people out there who would want to do it for the worst reasons.
