I see a certain so-called 'campaiging lawyer' has managed to get Nick Cohen suspended because of his gender critical views.

Ooh, I've missed out on all those valuable contributions to the discussion, was there much transphobia in those posts, or some other breach of rules?

There was a lot of frothing and not being, er, honest about the reasons for the thread they claim they got deleted.

(But, sadly, Columbo came there none.)

So, because multiple people were doing it, that lessens how bad it was?

No it doesn't. As I clearly said.

With respect, I wasn't quoting you, I was quoting someone who used part of your post to claim that the alligations were a witch hunt against Cohen.

IvyTwines · 03/08/2022 16:15

I've seen comments and subtweets about Cohen for a while now. I have about other men in the public arena too, which have never properly been brought into daylight. If fox-killer was bothered about bad behaviour towards women he'd have been using his loud voice on his very public soapbox to call out those on his own side who send death and rape threats to women, etc. etc.. Do you remember him doing that? I don't. And that's why we're cynical about the motives behind his sudden enthusiasm here.

Faffertea · 03/08/2022 16:14

Hello Twitter monitors!

MN FWR is not a hive mind so we don’t all do, say or believe one thing.
But it would be an odd sort of feminist board that didn’t want to see a proper investigation into whether a man was sexually violent to women and in particular it seems more junior women at his and their place of work.

For the avoidance of doubt:
So far the consensus is that’s it’s a GOOD thing that where women have come forward to report sexual violence from Cohen this is investigated.
Given Maugham’s previous displays of misogyny there is a sneaking suspicion that his motivation for wanting Cohen investigated is because he doesn’t like Cohen’s views on transgenderism rather than because he has a burning desire to see justice done for female victims of male violence.

Strewth. It's like whack a mole today.

This is where misogyny gets you. Claiming that this is Mumsnet defending predators.

Not to deny or diminish the accusations against him, but knowing what working life was like for young women in 2001, I doubt he was the only one doing it. But it's a very good thing if the whole male culture of these workplaces gets exposed and anyone responsible faces consequences.

Well, if it leads anyone here, they will see that almost all itsabouttimetoo's posts have been deleted.

can't say I'm surprised.

This. The whole thing feels like a bit of a witch hunt from the kimono wearer.

So, because multiple people were doing it, that lessens how bad it was? This is a rediculous argument, and it's insulting to all of the survivors. People owned slaves long ago, that doesn't make it okay, or a witch hunt, they were wrong to own slaves then, just as it is now.

Jesus wept.

Me neither.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2022 16:02

My full quote, not as part of a screenshot, about my own experiences as a young woman and junior member of staff being sexually assaulted and harassed by powerful men in the workplace in 2001:

Not to deny or diminish the accusations against him, but knowing what working life was like for young women in 2001, I doubt he was the only one doing it. But it's a very good thing if the whole male culture of these workplaces gets exposed and anyone responsible faces consequences.

Helleofabore · 03/08/2022 15:53

Remarkable to see the spin on twitter.

I have not seen one poster on here not support a full investigation of these claims. To spin it as ‘ the MN feminists supporting women’s abuse’ is very dishonest. But hey, we have seen the same false accusations here on this thread.

Yes, with a fair amount of spin.

Just a heads up that this thread is being commented on on certain corners of Twitter, like the one that was taken down earlier was. Draw whatever conclusions you feel are appropriate.

Pretty much every thread on here is screenshotted for twitter

🤷‍♀️

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2022 15:26

The way it reads is that JM himself linked the trans issue with his call for women to come forward and that he Tweeted “I’d be very happy to hear from women who have worked with Nick whether he is the champion they would choose for women’s rights in the workplace”. So the inference is that the trans row included workplace issues and JM was accusing Cohen of potential hypocrisy in claiming to stick up for women’s rights.

Yes that is how it reads. I don't know how true that is but I think the JM tweet was remarked on at the time.

Mysterioso · 03/08/2022 15:08

He's dirty? Investigate him and put him away if deemed appropriate.

But also do away with the one who only kicked off an investigation when it suited him. Second time in a week I've heard TRAs complain about something despite having previously not minded the negative associations in the past.

Sounds like we are going back to the era of blackmail using morality as a hostage.

So modern and progressive 🤔...

FigRollsAlly · 03/08/2022 15:00

The Telegraph says that JM put out a call for women to come forward “in the wake of” a row with Cohen about trans issues and that he then put their allegations to the Guardian in late 2021. The Telegraph says that JM published claims about Cohen’s behaviour last month as he was unhappy about the way his concerns had been handled thus far.

It really doesn't. The opening post is very misleading.

OP, can you change the title?

Quoting myself. I don't think it's misleading, in as much as that's how the paper reported it. So not your fault, op.

But the framing of it is very biased.

The OP was quoting The Telegraph headline.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2022 14:24

Yes I don't agree with that framing but they clearly wanted an angle, and the involvement of Foxy was juicy.

Datun · 03/08/2022 14:24

glomerulus · 03/08/2022 14:16

This thread is really nothing to do with TRAs/GC and it's a shame to see so many views framed that way.

Jolyon Maugham has some horribly misogynist views. He has (rightly) shone a light on what are some pretty substantial allegations against Nick Cohen. I can believe both things to be true.

It really doesn't. The opening post is very misleading.

OP, can you change the title?

Secondhand · 03/08/2022 14:23

This thread is really nothing to do with TRAs

It was The Telegraph that framed it as NC being suspended for his views on trans rights.

@Tanith sorry, you’re right, I’m not sure why I tagged you, I think I meant to tag the OP. Not mudslinging, simply observing
