Tra: gin maker holds adjacent opinions simultaneously, blasphemy
I'm not a TRA though. Is that what were calling anyone with an alternate view to the majority on here now?

That refers to the critical tweets...

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 31/07/2022 16:13

In the same way that the story of Canute now means something very different to its origins, linguistically we may well be at the same stage for the general understanding of "Mother's Ruin".

I'd agree with a PP that Hogarth's Gin Line is a popular depiction of gin as the opium of the people and, along with other social forces, prompted the Gin Act. Associated with gin, the critical force behind Mother's Ruin was women's increased access to alcohol and the impact of widespread addiction.

I'm unsure if it's ever been clear that gin is an abortifacient rather than the savin within any juniper used in the flavouring of it.

MN embrace Ginbut I have never seen support here for consumption to Hogarthian Mother's Ruin levels. I'd think suggestions that the name should be abandoned for reasons related to historical sensitivity and cleaving to those origins are very much a matter of personal choice.

Perlunk · 31/07/2022 15:56

Well, at least the brand includes the word mother. I guess that makes it a GC gin.

Perlunk · 31/07/2022 15:55

Erm… I didn’t tell anyone to shut up… was that directed at me?

HooverIsAlwaysBroken · 31/07/2022 15:46

I think the term anti-trans is meaningless these days. It could be anything, like saying mother instead of birthing parent or breastfeeding instead of chest feeding….

Feminists: no opinion on gin.
Tra: gin maker holds adjacent opinions simultaneously, blasphemy.
Feminists: ha ha
Critic: don't celebrate the gin.

I think we're being told to shut it?

Yup. Whatever views women express on the feminist board, someone will be along to tell us we're feministing wrong Grin

That's a misunderstanding.

The Hogarth Gin Lane is the nearest to that, but includes drunken debauchery/neglect from both sexes. The phrase is often misattributed to that.

Or sanitised to that.

Because the real origin was the rough gin brought about miscarriage, thus ruining the prospect pf motherhood. It was a sought-after method, to avoid the backstreet crone with dirty hooks

That's why I think it would be interesting and topical to embrace that, and rename it Abortifacient

That was my first thought on the meaning actually. So I went and googled and then saw this other interpretation and thought I’d misremembered the abortifacient thing. Talked myself round in a circle.

I think that’s worse then. It’s a brand named for the fact it was used to end pregnancies? Just seem weird for a feminism board to be celebrating this brand

AuntieStella · 31/07/2022 14:45

Perlunk · 31/07/2022 10:21

The brand name is based in the old trope that women who drink alcohol will neglect their children and turn to prostitution.

Nice…. Great brand to support on a feminist board.

To be fair, if a brand chooses to like GC causes from their twitter and not highlight any other political cause or viewpoint, that is an intentional brand positioning, which will push away people who do not take that position.

You’re objecting to Joanna Cherry’s tweet congratulating Allison Bailey. One proud and heroic lesbian congratulating another on an important win. Can’t have that lezzie stuff at a Pride event! Dear me, no.

Is that seriously what you're declaring "anti trans", Janet?
You're just embarrassing yourself now.

teawamutu · 31/07/2022 12:39

How is it still Pride FFS?

ThinkingaboutLangClegosaurus · 31/07/2022 12:32

GoodJanetBadJanet · 31/07/2022 01:28

Why would a business type account be liking anti trans type tweets in the first place?!
Hardly professional, surely as a business you keep neutral and just like related stuff, especially when it's promoting the fact it's supporting Pride that weekend there, I mean WTF

How are any of those likes 'anti trans' . They are pro women. And why shouldn't they support pride? Unless you are saying you can't be pro women and support Pride? Your world view is just bizarre.

Companies should remain neutral but also thumbs up to sponsoring pride? Reminds me of this. Is there a pattern?

That tweet (I don't know the spirit in which the person took it) took the content from a parody account.

It will be very interesting to see how this plays out given the current changes in the way the wind is blowing

mea culpa doesn’t really get you anywhere. I think the best way forward for this venue is to say as little as possible and certainly not row back

So, of course, that also applies to not promoting Pride or any like event as well…

Women have been banned from Twitter for quoting Hansard because that's been deemed "anti-trans" so referring to an "anti trans type tweet" doesn't narrow it down much.

surely as a business you keep neutral

And, yes, I would very much like businesses to stick to their core business and caring for their customers and their service experience but it doesn't seem to happen that way. As I'm sure everyone here is only too aware…
