Quite a few posters feeling its an apt comparison though.

Anyone who doesn't consider that contocted flag to be anything but repulsive is no ally for women or humankind in general. Think what you like about TRAs, it doesn't compare to genocide.

Dark day for mumsnet.

Do you think they should be arrested for it tho?

JacquelinePot · 29/07/2022 07:32

I look forward to the resultant media hooha and scrutiny that this should bring.

As Datun and others say, this is about the Police acting outwith their powers. We should all be outraged by this.

it's not about agreeing or disagreeing with what someone posted on facebook, it's about the Police illegally acting like bully-boy enforcers for people who hold particular characteristics. It's about misuse of Police resources. It's about them choosing to send 5 officers in 2 vehicles to visit someone over a facebook post, when we know damn well that they would be "too busy" to attend if the same house had it been burgled (an actual crime). It's about us sliding into totalitarianism.

exwhyzed · 29/07/2022 07:30

its perfectly possible to feel a flag is repulsive AND also be able to hold the knowledge in mind that posting something others find repulsive is in itself not a criminal act.

The irony of people supporting the police to whisk people away for thought crimes on a thread relating to someone's childish use of a swastika does not escape me.

achillestoes · 29/07/2022 07:29

‘Ironic then that their satirical visual statement led to their arrest.’

Yes.

🤣🤣

‘Think what you like about TRAs, it doesn't compare to genocide.’

No-one’s saying it compares to genocide. They’re saying it compares to proto-fascism.

achillestoes · 29/07/2022 07:27

We all agree some people find it offensive. I personally don’t, I think it’s making a political argument that gender ideology is fascist (it is in many cases, in my opinion). But even if I did find it offensive, even if everyone found it offensive, that’s not a reason for making it illegal, and it’s not actually illegal.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 29/07/2022 07:27

If this makes the newspapers, do you think they’ll print the image?

I do hope so. That will cause the person who reported it a lot of anxiety.

I hope everyone who looks at that incredibly ugly flag in years to come sees it as the authoritarian symbol that it is.

NotBadConsidering · 29/07/2022 07:26

I also agree that it’s disgusting and not funny that a group of people can take a system - non-crime hate incidents - that was implemented to better inform police of the depths of communism racism after the murder of a young black man - Stephen Lawrence - and abuse that system, in an authoritarian way, by inducing the state police to arrest people for the non-crime of not agreeing with the offended people’s ideology.

I have said it before, I don’t understand why Baroness Doreen Lawrence doesn’t jump up and down in disgust about these basement dwellers abusing the system set up in the wake of the racist murder of her son just because males get called men and they don’t like it. It would be great if she would.

Maybeonedayeventually · 29/07/2022 07:25

exwhyzed · 29/07/2022 07:17

I don't think it's particularly funny. Lawrence fox is someone I find unpleasant, objectionable and irritating. Harry seems like the kind of man I dread dealing with in my professional capacity and would swerve where possible.

but you do understand that we aren't 'defending' a swastika being used we are defending the right of people to be (in my opinion) unpleasant, objectionable and irritating without getting arrested for having those views.

Because who defines what is objectionable? Or irritating? Or unpleasant?

Quite a few posters feeling its an apt comparison though.

Datun · 29/07/2022 07:23

It's the prejudice that stands out. Women are routinely personally threatened with death and rape, harassed, intimated and bullied and the police just stand and stare.

A person gets offended by some flag rearranging and two van loads of law enforcers show up to arrest them.

The police are being used as a personal 'ideology defence team.'

It's not on.

Helleofabore · 29/07/2022 07:21

Some people find it funny for reasons of their own. The point is, offensive or not, the police have overstepped here.

If police resources are being wasted (how many police officers turned up for this incident???) to discuss ‘offensive’ things posted on the internet that are not ‘illegal’, that is a significant concern.

And the proportionality needs to be addressed. And the blatant bias.

Tell us how many threats made against women who disagree with gender identity theory are investigated like this again? …

PronounssheRa · 29/07/2022 07:20

Following quickly on from the mess that is Wiltshire police with their visit to Kellie-Jay Keen, this will be more bad PR for the police

And Harry will be like a dig with a bone.

Satire isn’t illegal. Political criticism isn’t illegal. Causing someone to feel anxiety isn’t illegal.

Ironic then that their satirical visual statement led to their arrest.

ArcticSkewer · 29/07/2022 07:14

Those flags, and the displays running the length of the high street, are a disgrace.

achillestoes · 29/07/2022 07:14

Satire isn’t illegal. Political criticism isn’t illegal. Causing someone to feel anxiety isn’t illegal.

ChaToilLeam · 29/07/2022 07:10

It’s distasteful of them to do that but not illegal in the UK. So yes, this sounds like police overstretch once more.

SlagathaChristie · 29/07/2022 07:06

anystropheus · 29/07/2022 07:03

It is an eye opener. Not funny in the slightest.

I know! So glad the not-so-secret police are there to arrest anyone who does something that upsets anyone! We can't have anything distasteful or not funny, no matter what point someone is trying to illustrate about authoritarianism. I have a long list of people who have upset me, where do I send it?

Empowermenomore · 29/07/2022 07:05

With police services like this, no wonder rape convictions are at an historical low.

i hope that Harry sue them.

I think it is a pretty grim thing for these men to do.

By “these men” you mean the police and TRAs, of course?

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 29/07/2022 05:39

It's funny because TRAs are so authoritarian and quick to shout nazi at anyone who disagrees
Creates a flag that can easily resemble a nazi flag and uses the police for anyone who dissects
They are the biggest hypocrites going.

NitroNine · 29/07/2022 05:34

The police aren’t so much stretching things as going beyond oversplits and into full contortionist territory here.

When the Hate Crime legislation was being debated the House of Lords discussed the fact that wearing swastikas &/or “singing certain songs” could be used to evidence a crime was a Hate Crime. These indications are in the relevant CPS guidelines. That’s it for swastikas in English & Welsh Law.

It honestly sounds as if they’re trying to go for a public order offence - as I said, contortionism. Especially if you consider, with reference to the swastika, the HAD of Unexpected Reenactment Nazis parading through your town for funsies.
