Yes. It was comparing gender identity ideology to an authoritarian regime. Did you think it was a statement of nazi support?

Come off it. It was perfectly clearly aimed at saying that that ideology equated to Nazism. The idea that people look at that and think "Hmm, a reasoned critique on authoritarian thinking" is just absurd.

DrBlackbird · 29/07/2022 10:27

Women are routinely personally threatened with death and rape, harassed, intimated and bullied and the police just stand and stare

And then these frightened women are murdered. Shame the police did not act as quickly on those occasions as they did to someone feeling anxious on this occasion.

When did criticising fascism become the same as being a fascist?

So the Pride Swastika was a critique on Fascism?

Yes. It was comparing gender identity ideology to an authoritarian regime. Did you think it was a statement of nazi support?

achillestoes · 29/07/2022 10:08

What is it about gender ideology that makes otherwise intelligent people so daft? Since when is it okay for public bodies to fly flags of allegiance to tiny segments of the population? Since when is it a crime to mock flags? Since when did the offence that might be taken by one group of people automatically take preference over the offence that might be taken by another?

If you can’t see that Fox and Co (whatever you think about them, whether you agree with their arguments about gender or not) are arguing against fascism and for freedom of speech (because - surprise! - fascists oppose freedom of speech) then I have a bridge you might like.

DarkDayForPearlClutchingVipers · 29/07/2022 10:00

We know that Marion Millar was arrested for displaying a picture of ribbons.

Now someone is arrested for sharing a picture of a flag.

The Haberdashery Wars of Oppression continue.

DarkDayForPearlClutchingVipers · 29/07/2022 09:58

Thanks for the Agard poem. Humans' fascination with brightly coloured bits of cloth is very strange. I suppose tribalism needs to be made visible.

The designer of the 'Progress' pride flag is a professional designer, btw. Believe it or not. Not only do I find it ideologically disturbing, it's an aesthetic disaster.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 29/07/2022 09:23

What is it about humans and flags? They cause no end of trouble

Somebody quoted this John Agard poem recently.

What’s that fluttering in a breeze?
It’s just a piece of cloth
that brings a nation to its knees.

What’s that unfurling from a pole?
It’s just a piece of cloth
that makes the guts of men grow bold.

What’s that rising over a tent?
It’s just a piece of cloth
that dares the coward to relent.

What’s that flying across a field?
It’s just a piece of cloth
that will outlive the blood you bleed.

How can I possess such a cloth?
Just ask for a flag my friend.
Then blind your conscience to the end.

who the hell is going to be on the lookout for possible swastikas in everything just in case somebody's head goes there?

Anyone involved in commercial design should cover this - it is pretty basic stuff.

The met have just walked into an obvious free speech trap, and anyone who has fallen for the righteous cause, likewise won't get the comparisons, the irony will be lost and they will take it at face value.

Things are going well and this will be a set back.

Harry Millar arrested though!

Phobiaphobic · 29/07/2022 09:44

What a gift for Harry. Can't wait to see the fallout. This week is the gift that keeps on giving.

ldontWanna · 29/07/2022 08:08

So knowing the law and pointing out the lack of following procedure is an offence now?

6 police officers!6!!

When is the last time police forces had that kind of resources for actual crimes?

Reminds me of the times when people would get arrested for making jokes about our "brave and fearless" leader. But that was the '80s in a communist country, not 2022 in bloody England!

Yup, eerily reminiscent of Communist childhood Sad

You do have to wonder if the principles of free speech would be getting quite so much support on MN if the person involved was a TRA.

Has that ever happened? Genuine question because I've seen tras post some pretty repellant things on twitter (death and rape threats).

The PCC for the area, whose name I cannot keep in my head, Donna..I want to say...Jones, calls Penny Mordaunt her pal.

I understand why Jewish people, in particular, would find the manipulated Trans flag offensive. I find all the hyperbolic cries of 'genocide' offensive.

Dark day for Munsnet...! I don't know why I find that so funny. But thank you, I needed a good laugh.

achillestoes · 29/07/2022 09:27

@Hoisin75

Exactly that. They’re saying the gender movement is fascist.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 29/07/2022 09:24

What the fuck are you talking about, TRAs apparently have a pass to say whatever they like up to the levels of harassment and to make violent threats with impunity. The double standards are a large part of the problem because it’s indicative of ideological capture of the police.

If legitimate political speech by TRAs was being shut down of course they’d be supported. But that’s not happening anywhere in the first world. Because transactivists aren’t fucking oppressed. They are in fact the oppressors as can be seen from the cops lining up to do their bidding even when it’s manifestly unjust and even illegal.

Needmoresleep · 29/07/2022 09:17

I found the original flag rearrangement mildly funny, seeing it as pointing out an accidental design fail - a bit like the 2012 Olympic "Simpson" images. Once seen hard to forget.

DH saw it as mildly offensive.

OK, move on.

This has taken it to a whole different level. Yes the police have been set up, but those same police, and it was clearly an organised operation, who fell for this might equally pick on some soap seller in Salisbury, or some mother somewhere who had posted something angular on twitter. Where is the bar which takes something from offensive but legal, to illegal.

FWIW I find the trans flag both ugly and anxiety provoking. It is effectively saying we have the power that allows us to trample on your rights, because you, as a woman, don't count.

achillestoes · 29/07/2022 09:08

@namechange7654

There are no links to neo-Nazism here. The use of the swastika is nothing to do with the person using it believing in Nazism. It is the direct opposite. When did criticising fascism become the same as being a fascist? And to whose benefit is that shift?

I condemn the conviction of count dankula too

and what he did was repellent

namechange7654 · 29/07/2022 09:01

jewishmum · 29/07/2022 05:05

Disappointed that people think this was funny or defended it.

I agree. I don't think it's "hilarious", and I think even tenuous links to neo-nazism should be taken very seriously.

That said, I'm not sure whether the police actually have the power to arrest someone over this. And then the idea of a police state, where wrong-think is a crime, is just as chilling. I really don't know where I stand on this one.

Platax · 29/07/2022 08:59

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 29/07/2022 08:58

Has the power

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 29/07/2022 08:58

It makes the police look worse than either LF or HM and it is a perfect demonstration about who had the power. The police don't turn up for actual crimes or step in when women are being manhandled by TRAs
Dark day for mumsnet my arse

Theeyeballsinthesky · 29/07/2022 08:55

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 29/07/2022 08:53

it does seem that some people struggle with the idea of free speech even for those they disagree with

as a PP pointed out, free speech types are often dicks. I consider these two men to be total dicks

and yet I'll strongly defend their right to be dicks because that protects my right to civil discourse about things I consider to be important

This! It was a cuntish thing to do frankly but just I think it makes them look like cunts doesn’t mean they should be arrested

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 29/07/2022 08:55

Dark day for mumsnet😂

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 29/07/2022 08:54

i’ll tell you whats a ‘dark day’ ….its when people who would like the police to obey their own rules when interacting with members of the public are arrested

admirably getting to the heart of the matter Rufus

the police have behaved with extreme stupidity here (and yes, I would guess harry secretly punched the air when he was arrested)
