oh I see someone else got there before me with the name change. Dammit!

It's a Dark Day for all of us, don't worry!

I did think it was grim to rearrange those flags. Not arrest worthy, just the kind of thing that doesn't help anyone.

Doyley put the point in a much better way. I felt a real punch in the gut when I saw these but the pictures say it all. And I'm not going to involve police unless it's a physical punch in the gut!

Yes.

'For some, these flags represent diversity and inclusion.

But for many, they symbolise an ideological movement that is hostile to gay people and women’s rights, opposes free speech, legitimises violence and bullying, and hounds people out of their jobs if they fail to conform.'

I find those flags, and particularly the arrangement of them - which appears to recall the Nuremberg flags - enormously offensive. However, I would and did not call the police about it.

Come off it. It was perfectly clearly aimed at saying that that ideology equated to Nazism. The idea that people look at that and think "Hmm, a reasoned critique on authoritarian thinking" is just absurd.

I think what this clearly reveals is that when TRAs call people Nazis they are just having mindless public tantrums.

It hasn't occurred to this person that TRAs are authoritarians (as this arrest demonstrated) and Nazis are authoritarians and that's the point being made here. They just assume it's random name calling because that's what TRAs do.

My guess, boots on the ground had no idea. Senior officers do now, if they didn't before

That's my guess, too. I also think they wouldn't have done it if they had known. Which makes it worse. They do all this, as long as it's not publicly known.

And if the Daily Mail do run the story, and they do show the flags, then everyone who reads the mail will instantly understand the reference and agree with it.

DarkDayForPearlClutchingVipers · 29/07/2022 11:21

From what I understand, Laurence Fox shared a picture of the flags on Facebook, this other bloke shared it, then had a visit from the police on Sunday, refused to pay a fine and attend a re-education camp, which then resulted in two vans and about six police attending his house to arrest him last night.

They didn't arrest Laurence Fox, who was there commentating. Harry Miller was there repeatedly telling them they had failed to caution Bloke A, and explaining the proper procedure, and after a while they arrested Harry for obstruction.

*occasion, speaking of dark days ... and please note the inclusion of 'ss' in occasion was entirely accidental and in no way a political comment on anything.

chilling19 · 29/07/2022 11:18

Bernardblack yes, I think that is what has happened. Harry released without charge this morning.

And no, of course people don't think that TRAs are actual neo Nazis. 🙄

They think they act like them. The judge in Harry's case actually said we don't have the gestapo or the Stasi in this country. So it's not surprising.

Thanks, I thought the solemnity of the occassion called for a namechange.

Erm

you’ve just pretty much restated what that poster said

nazism was an authoritarian regime, yes?

Oh thank god I was wondering what I missed!

I couldn’t get the video to play last night, but I’ve now been able to watch it

I think the sequence of events is

  • A man who isn’t LF or HM posted the swastika image on Facebook
  • the police came to his house at 10am on a Sunday morning and failed to caution him, but did try to get him to pay a £60 on the spot fine
  • presumably he told them to get stuffed and called LF and HM
  • the police went away and came back. (By appointment as LF and HM knew when to be there?)
  • HM pointed out a failure in their process
  • the police arrested him for annoying them
  • the police released him due to not having a leg to stand on
why the heck are the police attempting to regulate Facebook?

I wonder if they knew who Harry was?

Here's the English guidance:

Disappointed that people think this was funny or defended it.

I don't think it's funny. But I don't think it's an arrestable offence either. The police are failing on actual crimes, especially rape, yet they can send out 6 police officers for this nonsense! As if Laurence Fox isn't absolutely loving the attention as well - we should all be giving him less, not more, maybe then he'll stop being a dick.

achillestoes · 29/07/2022 11:00

‘Come off it. It was perfectly clearly aimed at saying that that ideology equated to Nazism.’

That’s what we’re saying. Since when did critiquing authoritarianism- by comparing it to other authoritarianism- become the offensive thing, rather than the authoritarianism?

VaggieMight · 29/07/2022 10:53

@Beowulfa thank you for mentioning that book. I read it years ago, as harrowing as it is, I couldn't put it down. I mislaid it and had forgotten what it was called. Thank you for the reminder.

I watched that video. They all admitted to sharing the image yet only one person got arrested for it. So the crime doesn't seem to be the sharing of the image. The crime occurs only if someone else finds it offensive. So someone else's feeling can make an otherwise legal activity illegal. We may as well go back to trial by ordeal.

IcakethereforeIam · 29/07/2022 10:38

From the Oxford Learners Dictionary:

Authoritarian - believing that people should obey authority and rules, even when these are unfair, and even if it means that they lose their personal freedom

Oddly, that's exactly what I thought. Tras obviously aren't nazis, that's absurd, but authoritarian, arguably, yes.

So once again police have walked right into a set up. The issue is not whether or not we believe something is right or wrong. Its whether its a a crime that matters. And if it isn't then why are police getting involved. Especially when actual crimes are going un responded to.

There are lots if things that are offensive/wrong/disgusting/racist/sexist/threatening etc that are posted on twitter/social media. I mean at one point it was full of MAPs openly posting about being a MAP. None of which police showed up for.

They are allowing themselves to be showed up as idiots. For people who's livelihood is meant to be investigating and putting entire cases together requiring a huge degree of intelligence, they have walked into this with disturbing ease.

Faith in the police is at an.all time low. Amd without the cooperation of the public they cant do their jobs. Sadly police have picked their side. And its not us.

Well said. They also visited PP for being 'untoward about pedophiles' in the same week.

Are the police actually aware that people are winning their free speech back, and we don't necessarily have to bow to Stonewall anymore? Do the read the news?
