Misogyny against Liz Truss

Is anyone else seeing endless misogyny against Liz Truss painting her as ‘thick’ or ‘stupid’? While there’s an acceptance that Rishi is a clever nerd?

I am finding it quite disconcerting. Both she and Rishi Sunak have PPE degrees from Oxford. Yet so many memes about her being dumb. I haven’t seen any attacking Rishi’s intelligence.

Obviously, many many people disagree with them both politically. But that’s not what I am talking about. This is about a specific sort of criticism that really seems directed at her as a woman.

My XH has a first from Oxford and he is thick in all the ways that actually matter in life. Bigoted, low EQ, zero common sense and an inability to quickly grasp new concepts. He is a very good lawyer and so will maintain his job for life but literally cannot grasp attention to detail on things that aren’t contracts. Just because someone went to Oxbridge doesn’t make them “intelligent”. This is a man who can’t remember three item shopping lists, where to put the sugar back, or how to calculate the cost of 2 cleaners for 90 mins.

I think this is really interesting, and helps identify what is wrong with so many of the Tories that come from privileged backgrounds. (I would need to think a bit to see if the same can be levelled at those from working class backgrounds who go into politics.)

I don't think of these people as thick, so much. Just intellectually lazy and lacking in the creativity and empathy needed to do the job they're in with any degree of lasting, positive impact.

DismantledKing · 24/07/2022 17:07

She’s practically Philomena Cunk

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 24/07/2022 16:44

I heard her on the Today Programme and rather liked her

I wonder if part of the problem is that she comes across as agreeable?

Thanks for giving me a laugh!!

Floisme · 24/07/2022 17:05

I get that some people disagree that there's misogyny. It's not as clear cut as it was back in the 'Ditch the bitch' era. But I'm interested that some posters do think it's going on but who then follow it up with a 'but....' or who say they feel conflicted. Calling it out if you see it doesn't turn you into a Truss supporter so what's the conflict?

GreenLunchBox · 24/07/2022 17:01

DismantledKing · 24/07/2022 16:57

She is spectacularly stupid. I don’t give a fuck what university she went to, she’s obviously been educated beyond her intelligence.

This 😂

Petrolordiesel · 24/07/2022 15:58

No
i am saying that making comments about her academic prowess and ability is not necessarily misogyny

Sorry, I was confused. The view of some on this thread seemed to be that Vote for Truss should not be criticised because she is a woman.

I think the problem is that she's a total lunatic. Not sure misogyny has much to do with it.

MarshaBradyo · 24/07/2022 16:52

Ny view on her has changed, from first debate to R4 interview

She answered directly and clearly, it made me rethink a bit. Plus she was one of the few who could deal with their insane interrupting with a I haven’t finished

DoElephantsHaveWrinkles · 24/07/2022 15:18

That's just another little quip, isn't it? Why not just say what you mean?

I assume you're getting at the fact that she's thought to be modelling herself after Thatcher. If that's what she wants to do that's up to her, I couldn't care less what she wears. I don't see the significance of commenting on it TBH, it's doesn't add anything to the argument.
Attack the policy, not the person. I don't see how it proves that she's a bad politician when you criticise her clothes.

Am I allowed to attack the policy of apeing someone who until a few years ago was the most destructive PM the country has had?

Whitehorsegirl · 24/07/2022 16:45

Sorry but no.

This has nothing to do with misogyny. It is simply stating the obvious. Same with Nadine Dorries or anyone else associated with the Johnson government, male or female. They are simply incompetent, lying, self-serving waste of space. And yes incredibly thick...

Our current politicians are simply appalling and have been slowly but surely destroying our quality of life and the reputation of the country.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 24/07/2022 16:44

DeclineandFall · 24/07/2022 16:43

If you say and do stupid things people will call you thick. She appears to be incompetent and stupid but there is probably a misogynistic element as Johnson wasn't the sharpest tool in the box but he's a man who talks posh and waffles nonsense about Greeks and loads of people thought he was some sort of genius.
The cosplaying Thatcher deserves all the ridicule it gets.
She appears to me to be a genuinely awful person. Sunak similarly.

A degree in PPE doesn't make you able to send a rocket into space, or do fiendishly hard sums, or be a quantum physicist, not it appears a decent politician. It measures intelligence in a very narrow, very specific, academic way. Doesn't mean you can't be all shades of thick in every other sphere of life. It's very academically competitive as it is very popular.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 24/07/2022 16:40

Liz Truss think drones are scared of dogs. Thick as mince.

AnnaMagnani · 24/07/2022 16:39

Oxford PPE, otherwise known as the bullshitters degree?

We should have a 50 year ban on Etonians and PPE graduates being in public office.

An average person can get into Oxbridge if they have the correct schooling/coaching. Eton/Winchester/whatever. Doesn't mean they're any cleverer than me

It would be great if this were true, but it isn’t. As scores and scorers of disappointed Etonians could tell you if you weren’t too prejudiced to believe them. Oxford PPE is really about as academically competitive as it gets.

Yeah, ok

Nobody commented that Kemi was thick. Liz is criticised because she comes across as spectacularly stupid.

She'll make a useful idiot for the real people in charge as she changes her beliefs to whatever will help her get ahead. She'll be used, chewed up and spat out within a year.

achillestoes · 24/07/2022 16:17

It’s awful.

GreenLunchBox · 24/07/2022 16:16

PersonaNonGarter · 24/07/2022 16:10

And to anyone saying she is thick, do you actually know how clever you have to be to do PPE at Oxford? It’s insanely competitive.

My point is everyone seems to accept that Rishi is bright (but might be wrong) but so many people think Liz Truss is actually stupid. That’s misogyny. They have the same academics.

I don't think Rishi or Bozo are particularly intelligent and I think Dominic Raab is actually thick just like Liz. So nothing to do with sex. An average person can get into Oxbridge if they have the correct schooling/coaching. Eton/Winchester/whatever. Doesn't mean they're any cleverer than me.

She absolutely is thick and will be an absolute liability as PM, so do behave with your accusations of misogyny.

No, she might be wrong but she isn’t thick.

@Petrolordiesel could she handle her briefs?
What do her civil servants think?
