I am embracing virtue signalling pronouns in emails

I have realised I have made too many assumptions about gender over the years. I had always assumed that Paul (name changed of course) in my company was a man simply on the basis of his appearance (well over 6 foot, well built, big beard, low voice that only someone with an Adam's apple and whose balls have dropped could have). Imagine my relief to find that I have not been misgendering him for over a decade because he has helpfully added his pronouns to his email auto signature - they are he/him/his. There is no company diktat to add pronouns on emails so clearly this is important to Paul or maybe he has been misgendered recently.

So, I thought I would ensure that Paul was not offended on a Teams meeting this afternoon and kicked off the meeting by asking everyone to note that Paul's pronouns are he/him/his and that given that he has stated these that everyone please be sensitive to ensuring that they use them. No one said anything so I think they all took it on board, no one misgendered Paul and I like to think that his move to include his pronouns at work has been embraced in my meeting. Maybe as a result others that attended the meeting will add theirs to their auto signatures too.

You seem very very determined to paint OP as an evil bully @Kanaloa is it because she will not accept the new religion?

Why is telling people the pronouns someone very freely put in his email signature bullying? If he didn’t want people to use them he should not have put them in should he? If he ours them in his email signature he can’t be upset if people use them can he?

Kanaloa · 22/07/2022 19:56

And as for ‘it’s just a joke/lighten up/no sense of humour’ isn’t that just what bullies say when they’re laughing at you and you dislike it? It’s not ‘a joke’ when the person you’re laughing at doesn’t find it funny. It’s just you laughing at being nasty to someone.

Kanaloa · 22/07/2022 19:55

Conflictedunicorn · 22/07/2022 18:37

Yes it is. It’s funny and a very clever way of showing this ridiculous ideology up for the pathetic load of gobbledegook it is.

How is it funny and clever? What’s funny about it? It’s not very clever either - it makes little difference in the grand scheme of things and didn’t take a huge amount of brainpower to think up. People are falling over themselves to pretend it was really witty and intelligent - and I get it because if someone has similar views to you then of course you want to think they’re great for standing up for those views. But it really wasn’t clever or funny. There was nothing funny about it.

Spiralle · 22/07/2022 19:55

But you were mocking him. You know it, and he knows it.
The fact that you were sly and underhand about it doesn't make it any better.

You sound like a blue-haired wokie with no sense of humour.

Get a grip FFS, she was only having a joke with him.

Artichokeleaves · 22/07/2022 19:53

employees without trans identities matter too. Some of them also have mental health issues that could be exacerbated by the behaviour of colleagues and superiors at work.

Quite.

It proves in fact that the supposed noble values are nothing more than a veneer, there is no genuine care or committment to them as values. They're merely a way to manipulate people into compliance with creating in fact two groups of people: the special ones who make demands and get service, and the herd who must serve them and be afraid of putting a foot wrong in the process.

How on earth anyone can be dim enough not to see the very obvious immediate problems ahead with this baffles me.

If ths is really 'one of the nastiest threads on mumsnet' I expect it will be reported and vanish in a puff of smoke shortly. Adios, mes amigos, fare thee well, such sweet sorrow, etc ...

I’ll miss you. It’s been fun. We had a good run didnt we?

Conflictedunicorn · 22/07/2022 19:50

And a thread about enjoying watching flies die. That is a very nasty thread. Why is it it’s only threads where people are calling out this g word that I’m not allowed to say that are labelled nasty or mean? Almost like people with an agenda are trying to stop people discussing this topic

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/07/2022 19:49

It’s always interesting to see what activates a collective dummy throw

Any sort of gentle mockery, generally. We must take this ideology seriously at all times.

It's really not. It's actually one of the nastiest threads I've seen on munsnet, and that's saying something.

Yes, it's saying something ridiculous. This is a lighthearted thread about honouring people's self-expressed pronouns. There are rape apologist threads, racist threads, and poo trolls.

Conflictedunicorn · 22/07/2022 19:34

<bork>. Now that’s a thought. I’ll be good and not use bad words, honest guv.

Conflictedunicorn · 22/07/2022 19:31

Oh no! Have I committed the worst sin on mumsnet? Am I sentenced to 6 hours is sporners corner or do I have to do a flounce?

Be really careful not to flounce in sporner's corner, I think that could get really messy. You'd end up covered in gobbledegook.

PearlClutch · 22/07/2022 19:31

Can I just check the protocol for when pronouns are declared, if it's really upsetting so many people that OP used the given pronouns?

We are to register the pronouns but not under any circumstance are we to use them, is that correct? We are to understand the motivation is merely unfortunate and make allowances?

Seriously?! Cripes.

How come?

Is it the word 'gobbledegook'?

Conflictedunicorn · 22/07/2022 19:26

It’s the poor it departments I feel sorry for. In our organisation, only they are allowed to amend email signatures. Can you imagine if everyone in the organisation (6000+) decided they were gender fluid and wanted different pronouns every time they changed gender. But they’d soon be stopping that nonsense.

LovinglifeAF · 21/07/2022 19:07

I had to call Barry recently. I was so grateful of the he/him on his email signature, I’d have assumed he was a woman otherwise.

<snort>

Conflictedunicorn · 22/07/2022 19:20

Yes @TastefulRainbowUnicorn , it’s quite funny to see the hyperbole. If this is the nastiest thread on mumsnet, must be a netmums escapee.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 22/07/2022 19:19

lol! Now that’s funny.

It’s always interesting to see what activates a collective dummy throw. Seems like they really really don’t want other people emulating OP.

Which is great to know! Thanks @MsFogi

Conflictedunicorn · 22/07/2022 19:18

Well why are you reading it then?

surreygirl1987 · 22/07/2022 19:17

It is saying you've not read any threads in AIBU, Style & Beauty, The Dog Kennel or The Cat Litter Tray

Nope - I read AIBU and this is definitely one of the nastier threads.

TheBiologyStupid · 22/07/2022 19:17

donquixotedelamancha · 21/07/2022 22:08

Sounds like you were mocking his use of pronouns?

How would one share the fact that a person want us to all know the special words we must use when discussing them, without it seeming like a joke?

It's like the very straight article about Quidditch changing its name, in the Guardian, which could just as easily be from the onion.

Indeed! And as Bill Maher wisely said: "When what you’re doing sounds like an Onion headline, stop". www.thewrap.com/maher-on-cancel-culture-when-what-youre-doing-sounds-like-an-onion-headline-stop/

Take "trans" anything out of the equation and look at what this policy actually means in the workplace. It's leaving linguistic traps in conversation and then self-righteously chastising the victims when they walk into the trap you left. It's a totally unacceptable way to treat people. It's toxic, and it's baked into the whole "transinclusive" mindset.

And all to force people to uphold an ideology, even if its against the person's will or best interests.

But it is the virtuous and kind thing to do, to correct Sarah in payroll and make her feel small, because she didn't know Dylan in IT was non-binary now. Sarah has a lot on her mind, and is going through a personal cancer scare, and struggling with meeting the care needs of her aging parents. Her inner life is invisible to Dylan and therefore it does not exist, and her feelings certainly don't count.

Nah the enforced pronouns crowd are the ones doing bullying

“call this biological man a woman!!”

”erm ok if it’ll make them feel ok”

Now give them access to all womens spaces”

”erm hang on they’re a man”

”no they are not!! You are addressing them as she or her are you not?? You clearly agree they’re a woman otherwise why are you using female pronouns. You have no right to keep this woman out of female spaces”

“but….i was only doing it to be kind. Obviously they’re not really a woman….”

”bigot!TERF! Witch”

That’s now my position. I refuse to be compelled to lie. It’s against my religious beliefs. Why should I consign myself to hell to validate someone else? .
