Is it now the norm for the BBC to lie?

Why did the BBC interview a transwoman boxer who had boasted about cracking a woman's skull in the ring, on the basis that the woman was a "terf". And why did they (very very probably) lie about not knowing about it? Is this the norm now, because "trans rights" come before public duty and integrity?

Odd because I thought breaking a woman's skull was the reason anyone even knows who Fallon Fox is

THIS!

I don't think the BBC lied.

It sounds as if they didn't know about it. Justin Webb seemed genuinely surprised when it was put to him on Twitter.

It seems more likely that the researchers didn't check FF thoroughly enough. That's bad, and they have apologised for it. They need to be more careful about interviewees in this area, given how nasty some people are.

I really can't believe any mainstream broadcaster would knowingly have invited FF if they'd known FF's history. They would know how much trouble it would cause to interview someone like that, and anything the person said would be worthless, so not good from a journalistic point of view.

This is an update to a previous thread about an interview with Fallon Fox.

The Telegraph article by Ewan Somerville is headed:

"BBC apologises after interviewing transgender athlete who boasted of violence against women

Justin Webb, who led the interview, has insisted he had 'no idea' the retired MMA fighter, Fallon Fox, had made such comments"

I'm inclined to believe him on that but he also said the producers didn't know and I am not so sure about that.

If Justin Webb had known about the broken skull/attitude of FF he’d have brought it up I think. He generally seems very alert to the difficulties trans ideology bring and prepared to meet them head on. Whoever booked FF should have done their research (or if they knew the issues briefed the presenters).

Unfortunately, while pointing out the BBC's failings, the Telegraph also failed to tell the truth, repeating the lie (like most of the media) that British Triathlon have barred transgender athletes from competing in the female category. They haven't: they've barred male athletes from the female category.

It feels like the 'don't point out the truth it'll hurt my feelings" barrier should probably be a few steps back from "don't fracture my skull"

I think it's very unlikely that Justin Webb knew. If he did he'd have brought it up.

Certainly whoever is was doing the interview research fucked up.

mrshoho · 17/07/2022 13:53

Shameful bbc. Either liars or plain incompetent (or both). As for the fighter what a first class arsewipe.

FrancescaContini · 17/07/2022 13:44

I fail to see how they can’t have known about the comments promising to “smack up” women who disagree with the trans ideology. The programme researchers would have easily had to hand any information in the public domain about this vile individual. A quick google would have thrown it up.

Shame on R4 - we expect better.

I'm not a journalist...but I know you should always research your subject beforehand.

So yes, a liar.
