It would be the full Monty up to date.

I came back to read the rest of the thread and wondered what K Monty had said about it all!

YetDespiteTheLookOnMyFace · 16/07/2022 23:37

Maurice Cockwill. I salute you.

This has to be made into a movie. I vote for Daniel Craig as Maurice Cockwill, the former athletics coach who is gutted that his girls team are being robbed of their medals. I would watch this. It think it also has an afterlife as a musical.

Yes! I bet people would kill to be in the chorus line.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/07/2022 15:34

How the hell is one supposed to tell the difference between one male person dressed in women's gendered clothing and another male person dressed in women's gendered clothing?

It's just not logical.

I thought it was quite funny

So a trans person is complaining about someone dressing up as the opposite sex?!

This...

LovelyFlora · 16/07/2022 01:20

Is it that men are OK, carry on, if they just ridiclue, humuliate, hurt, kill women?

But god forbid if anyone says or does anything that upsets a trans identified man?

Double standards? Hypocrisy? Patriarchy?

FlirtsWithRhinos · 16/07/2022 00:27

Hang on....

Trans women are women, yes?

And there's a long tradition of men dressing up as women for comedy and entertainment. Pantomime dames, drag queens, Cissie and Ada...men have dressed up as old women, young women, powerful women, tragic women, funny women, dumb women, stunning women, slutty women, nuns...they've dressed up as women to honour women, to affectionately take the piss out of women and to utterly insult and degrade women.

So....why should trans women, and only trans women, be off limits for men to dress up as? Isn't that kind of othering?

We need more men dressing up as trans women! I for one look forward to the first drag act whose character is a trans woman. Now THAT will be really challenging some stereotypes!

Riverlee · 15/07/2022 20:22

picklemewalnuts · 15/07/2022 20:05

Interesting how Donna describes the men as wearing singlets. I see sports bras and crop tops. Not a singlet in sight.

Donna clearly thinks that certain clothes are worn by men, others by women. The name of the item depends who is wearing it, it seems.

Sports coach knows what's what. And so clearly political commentary, not poking fun at transwomen at all.

IsadoraQuagmire · 15/07/2022 19:30

"What if people noticed I was trans" Hahaha, the vast majority of people can tell at a cursory glance that someone is trans (and anyone who can't is either scarily unobservant or lying)

McDuffy · 15/07/2022 19:25

Love it! With Devonian accents Grin who's playing Maurice?

This is crying out to be made into a film 😆

I'd buy the DVD.

I’m not sure that ‘sorry you felt that way, let’s re-publish the photo and explain the point’ is the outcome that Landy wanted.

Grin

I'm so angry about this disgusting float being seen on a little street in Devon, that I'm going to complain and get the story into a leading national newspaper, complete with photo and lots of people discussing it. Er, wait a minute ....

NewNamePrivacyneeded · 15/07/2022 16:19

"Does it not occur to Donna that the reason they were there, and accepted is because of how MUCH awareness there is in the community, not how little? As for, "what if people noticed I'm trans.." Donna, love, everyone can tell at a single glance. Nobody thinks you're a woman.."

It's pretty obvious that trans Donna is a man in a dress the same as the ones in the carnival float so why is it ok for her and the carnival men in dresses have to apologise. She really doesn't think that we look at her as see a woman does she!

How do I find the comments? The article was great!

They are at the bottom of the article, but I think for subscribers only. Until quite recently the Times didn't allow any comments on trans articles. And now they are often better than the article itself. The comments today are people having a laugh, hilariously in many cases, also some very serious pertinent replies and best of all, most people think this is nonsense which they've had enough of.

senua · 15/07/2022 16:08

“The committee is very sorry for how this has made people feel and very much hopes that all concerned are assured of our best intentions.”
People? Do they mean "one person"?

Shouldn't we all write in to the committee and tell them how we feel and that we support the point that the float was making.

TheCurrywurstPrion · 15/07/2022 15:22

The Chariots of Fire theme could do with another airing!

”The statement added: “We were able to establish that the float did not submit a carnival entry form and did not enter for judging. “If they had done so, the judges and stewards would have refused their entry/float. It appears that the float joined the procession out of sight of anyone on the committee as it moved off and, we assume, with the signage covered over, with this being unveiled further along the route.”

The marvellous Mr Cockwill obviously knows what he is doing!

Stealth terving par excellence!

So glad this is getting another airing. Couldn’t get more Streisand if you tried!

mcduffy · 15/07/2022 14:07

Go Maurice you magnificently named person!!

SingingSands · 15/07/2022 14:03

Donna says that "she could have been attacked".

But... Donna wasn't attacked, not even acknowledged probably. It annoys me when people conflate "could have" with what actually happened i.e. nothing.
