Adult human female.

In the next general election Kemi would get my vote for prime minister. Never before have I voted Tory, but I do believe that I am ready and willing to die on this hill.

@lifeturnsonadime

The fact that they have additional needs is a risk factor at home as well. I don’t say that personally at all, but this isn’t a simple issue and it certainly isn’t sufficient to make me believe KB wouldn’t do what she believes is best for kids. That’s all she can do.

lifeturnsonadime · 13/07/2022 13:45

I understand, but absenteeism is also one of the clearest red flags for a safeguarding concern. This is a complex issue. However, KB has one of the clearest views on safeguarding children from the specific risks of gender ideology and trans activism, and that is important to me and my female children.

I have a female child who is autistic who in the exact demographic that is is really at risk because she is non gender conforming.

Read the report I linked. In 90% of prosecuted absenteeism the child has additional needs.

Criminalising parents who fail to send their children to unsafe schools because the state wants to diminish SEN funding will HARM more children than gender ideology will. Under Kemi world I would have been criminalised for having the temerity of having children who couldn't cope in mainstream. How does that help anyone?

There is a real danger that people are becoming blinkered on this single issue.

XenaKeyboardWarriorPrincess · 13/07/2022 13:43

Well my friend certainly already had that ability. She wouldn't have risen high to sister and then trainer if she hadn't
So I don't believe a degree is the best route. Sorry.

Octomore · 13/07/2022 13:43

dig even slightly into her policies and she is scary like the rest of them..... they are all playing to the conservative base of small state when further austerity is what we need least right now

I agree with this. I'm not a conservative member, but would not vote for her in a general election on the basis of her views on the economy etc. Austerity has been catastrophic for this country.

MoreHairyThanScary · 13/07/2022 13:41

A degree gives you the ability to critically analyse evidence.

If you can not assess how valid One study is over another you are unable to justify your clinical practice using the best evidence.

A caring nurse is essential but unless they are able to provide effective evidence based care you may not get better as quickly as you would have hoped.

MoreHairyThanScary · 13/07/2022 13:38

@Caringcarer.

We already have nurses ( registered with the NMC) entering the profession via an apprenticeship programme. These are nurse associates ( from my perspective a modern equivalent of an EN).

The BIGGEST barrier to any nursing course at the moment is the availability of placements, the shortage of 40,000 nurses across the UK has an impact on safety and placement availability... we can not send 1st year nurses out without adequate supervision, that supervision takes time away from patients to allow learning to happen - and ensuring quality, therefore placements are limited in the number of students they can support. Universities are trying to support an increase in the number of students with programmes of 3rd years supporting lower years but these also need supervision.

Nursing IS a degree profession, healthcare has changed beyond all recognition since the 1960 and carry on matron, nurses are specialists in their own right and despite a previous poster 's belief that once you have a degree you stop learning...bullshit- I've yet to meet a nurse who isn't constantly updating and increasing her /his knowledge.

First impressions of Kemi are vaguely positive but dig even slightly into her policies and she is scary like the rest of them..... they are all playing to the conservative base of small state when further austerity is what we need least right now.

XenaKeyboardWarriorPrincess · 13/07/2022 13:37

My point is the degree isn't important. It's the ingoing study, which everyone, including my friend who managed to rise high in nursing, does.
The degree is not essential. Trainer friend says not as effective. Why do nurses need to get a degree if it's not useful? If you had to have a degree to begin with my friend would not have become a nurse so barring people who can't afford study. She also wouldn't have been able to train countless new nurses.
The degree caused her a lot of stress because she never learned how to write academically. It didn't make her a better nurse. She was still carrying the ward whilst being patronised for not having a degree. A degree doesn't mean you are a better person or better at your job.

Who is Nadine White?

lifeturnsonadime · 13/07/2022 13:29

, and children being adequately safeguarded is worth quite a bit.

Sadly with Kemi's views on education children will NOT be adequately safeguarded in education terms.

My children, under Tory proposals will be unsafe. The proposed Schools Bill seeks to criminalise parents of children with SEN who are unwilling to send their children to schools which cannot keep them safe.

It is mothers, mothers of children with disabilities who are disproportionately impacted by such ableist policies.

www.coventry.ac.uk/news/parents-most-at-need-are-being-penalised-over-childrens-school-attendance-report-finds/

I am glad that Kemi knows what a woman is but a claim that she will keep children safe is simply untrue.

achillestoes · 13/07/2022 13:18

Well I wish we could have everything but we can’t. Women being treated as full humans with the same free speech rights as everyone else, and children being adequately safeguarded is worth quite a bit.

Except Kemi Badenoch's notions on "free speech" don't extend to other women (journalists) who dare to ask her questions (Nadine White)
Consistently voted against measures to prevent climate change
Voted against financial incentives for low carbon emission electricity generation methods
Consistently voted against higher taxes on banks
Voted against laws to promote equality and human rights

MrsOvertonsWindow · 13/07/2022 13:14

Back to Kemi....
I'm not a tory voter but it's chilling to realise that she would not be allowed to share these views in the labour party. She would have been bullied, relentlessly harassed and likely deselected by Starmer and his co misogynists for transphobia and wrong think.
However this leadership contest pans out I'm pleased that women's rights and the safety of children are being acknowledged and spoken about.

calmlakes · 13/07/2022 13:13

Jim Gamble, (Who used to run CEOP) back in the day has said she would be his choice.
I have a fair amount of time of Jim having worked with him in the past on child protection issues.

Kemi Badenoch knows what a woman is.
knittingaddict · 13/07/2022 13:05

I was talking to my husband yesterday about who she is and how great she is on trans issues. Having looked into it further I'm not sure I agree with her on anything else, so I have to reconsider. Fortunately I probably won't need to make that decision because I don't think she will reach the shortlist of 2.

Octomore · 13/07/2022 12:55

XenaKeyboardWarriorPrincess · 13/07/2022 07:57

You seem to have missed that my friend was both a sister and s trainer without a degree. Her knowledge was deemed good enough to train those with degrees and they begged her not to retire because the new batch of nurses aren't nearly as practically capable.

And yes, I am well aware it has changed. As was she because it was a requirement for her job to keep up with the current medical knowledge. She studied at home her whole career.
The problem with a degree is it assumes once you've got it you have nothing to learn. My friend has more knowledge than most doctors because her role required her to stay up to date and not coast by on a qualification.

This is so ignorant I don't even know where to start.

You think degree-qualified nurses and doctors (and other professionals too?) stop bothering to learn once they graduate? You think they don't have CPD requirements to maintain their accreditation? A doctor, in particular, will do years of obligatory post-graduation learning.

I don't know who told you that a degree = nothing more to learn, but that isn't the case for any of the professionals that I'm aware of. Your friend is very, very mistaken if she thinks that nurses without degrees are the only ones required to stay up to date.

@BotCrossHuns thanks

achillestoes · 13/07/2022 12:29

@Rummikub

I believe in sensible state spending. There will be areas where the state is overspending (Stonewall?) and areas where it’s underspending. There can’t be sacred cows.

mrsjackrussell · 13/07/2022 11:57

Octomore · 13/07/2022 07:46

The job a nurse does has changed hugely in the last 50 years. What used to be done by a nurse is now often done by a HCA who does not have a degree. Nurses do more complex work these days.

As a retired nurse i found that HCA s did everything that nurses did except administer medication and write the main patient notes. Many of them were more experienced than the newer nurses.

Rummikub · 13/07/2022 11:54

Yes and a black woman as PM would be incredible but not at risk of a smaller state and people pushed further into poverty.
i was so disappointed when I read about her stance on the state.

achillestoes · 13/07/2022 11:41

@Rummikub

I don’t know, to be honest. And maybe KB doesn’t either, but no-one knows everything. Someone has to be PM.

Eve · 13/07/2022 11:40

isnt she a right wing Christian fundamentalist ? What’s her stance on abortion rights?

she may know what a woman is but will she respect their rights?

Rummikub · 13/07/2022 11:32

I guess it’s POV on the challenge of the role. I wouldn’t see nursing as less challenging or a lower skill set than eg a radiographer.

achillestoes · 13/07/2022 11:10

@Rummikub

I’m not sure there’s a case for saying all health professions need pay parity. Pay should be dependent on the challenge inherent in the job, and whether or not a degree is required should be judged on the same basis. We need more nurses. We should pay them decently. That doesn’t mean we need to artificially inflate the job requirements.

Rummikub · 13/07/2022 11:06

achillestoes · 13/07/2022 11:00

@Rummikub

Is there evidence we would recruit fewer nurses if we didn’t restrict the recruitment pool in this way?

Don’t know about that. But it does need parity with other health professions. And pay would be reduced too.

Tbh I think there’s room for both as there used to be.
