Is CIS a legal term?

So I had a conversation with a friend the other day who is adamant Cis is an accurate descriptor of women and that it is written into law?
I asked where but she couldn't specify just stating it's a factual term (referencing women) that is legally recognized.
I've had a look and can't seem to find anything to back this up, but I know the wise women here will know if there is any truth to this.
Thanks in advance.

Come on ladies, we need to realise that being "hurt" and "offended" only applies to one side of the debate. Come on now be kind!

Fenlandia · 11/07/2022 19:06

I don't have a gender identity any more than I have a religion, a favourite member of BTS or a star sign. They're all irrelevant to me but if they're meaningful to you, fill your boots!

I've spent my whole life pushing back against 'social norms' and stereotypes of what I should be doing as a girl and then as a woman. Why would I embrace cs? How do you know if I'm cs?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/07/2022 19:05

No, just most of us have half a brain and compassion to understand that that statement is hurtful and unnecessary

It might well be "hurtful" like lots of reality is. It's very necessary though.

FrippEnos · 11/07/2022 19:05

@Flolawri and @beautyisthefaceisee

In order to be 'cis' I have to accept and adhere to 'societal norms' and 'stereotypes' I do not do this so I cannot be 'cis'. Your definitions do not define me.

It also does not help your cause that you cannot define your definitions beyond stereotypes.

I am however the sex that I was born as. So 'cis' is once again mis-gendering me, which in the same way that I mis-gendered someone else is offensive.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/07/2022 19:04

People tend to use it as a way of saying those who aren't trans, as that is all it means

As I pointed out, that is inaccurate outside the limits of your belief system.

Can I? so the battering I got for pointing out a thread mocking pronouns was not okay was uncalled for was it?

I mean, if I posted a thread taking the piss out of people offended by cisgender that would be fine, wouldnt it?

Which thread was mocking pronouns?

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 11/07/2022 19:03

What was that about how "feminists" needed to understand their words had "consequences"?

When you use the word "cis", some people will see you as a like-minded individual and feel kindly towards you. Their hearts and minds will be open to you. Others will not think kindly of you. They will think of Foucault and what they know of him.

Your words have consequences on how people think of you. None of us get to decide what people think of us inside their heads. Is your problem that she has negative associations with the word "cis" or that you now know about it? If it's the first, you don't get to control people's thoughts. If it's the second, you're coming across as if it is brand new information to you that it had such negative connotations to anyone, so that's useful information to know.

tobee · 11/07/2022 19:03

I'm simply saying words are important.

Of course "cis" is used as a subcategory. According to genderists there are women, as a category, and that category includes two sub types of women - trans women and cis women. They are most definitely separate categories, as a cis woman cannot be trans and a trans woman is not cis.

And "humans cannot change sex" isn't an opinion or a belief, it's a fact. You can go further and say that no mammal can or ever has changed sex. Trying to deny the truth of that statement is some mad kind of science denial.

No, just most of us have half a brain and compassion to understand that that statement is hurtful and unnecessary and the faux wide eyed "but its true" fools nobody.

Flolawri · 11/07/2022 19:00

@HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd I'm not trying to force cisgender or gender identity on anyone, that's wrong. I'd hate for someone to force me to be a man. I'm just here to explain what these terms are, not say that's what you should use.

Oh then we are at cross purposes. I think most of us have heard the definition, but are resisting other posters telling us we qualify under it.

beautyisthefaceisee · 11/07/2022 19:02

tobee · 11/07/2022 19:00

Yes you can indeed have it both ways @beautyisthefaceisee

bellinisurge · 11/07/2022 19:01

I find the term cis offensive.

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 11/07/2022 19:00

I burnt all my Foucault the last day of finals. (Effing panopticon.) Then had to buy it all again for PG, then binned it all again. I had no idea that was who was being referred to. Every day is a school day.

tobee · 11/07/2022 19:00

Yes you can indeed have it both ways @beautyisthefaceisee

People should learn who dreamt up this terminology.

Repeating the same thing without the offensive word doesnt make what you said any less offensive.

Flolawri · 11/07/2022 18:59

RoseslnTheHospital · 11/07/2022 18:55

"cisgender is just when your gender identity matches your biological sex."

So @Flolawri can you accept that plenty of women don't have a "gender identity" and want to continue to classify people (only where necessary) by their sex? And that sex matters in some circumstances, for safety, privacy, dignity for example.

Other people are welcome to refer to their own "gender identity" and organise things for themselves according to their "gender identity" but must recognise that it's not something that should be imposed on people that don't have the same beliefs.

I never said I don't accept it. Have a gender identity or don't. I'm purely just stating what cisgender means, not forcing the label on anyone.

LaSavoie · 11/07/2022 18:59

cisgender is just when your gender identity matches your biological sex

What word do trans people use to describe the biological sex class of XX? Regardless of how that person identifies?

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 11/07/2022 18:59

Flolawri · 11/07/2022 18:55

@HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd gender identity is a bit weird. We're all our own versions of women or men. We all define it in our own ways.

Now there I agree with you again, and that’s because sex is just biology and gender is just societally prescribed norms.

If people want to adhere to norms that’s great. If they want to reject norms that’s also great, but personally all I have is sex and personality. If you put my brain in another body, I would just observe the sex of that body and get on with life, I have absolutely zero feeling of “brain sex” or innate gender.

So I just want my feeling of not having a gender id respected and I don’t want to be bullied into labelling myself cisgender, because I’m not.

tobee · 11/07/2022 18:57

Interestingly I have heard it say they are important when it comes to misgendering, pronouns etc.

So you can have it both ways.

Pronouns are a load of nonsense and fair play to ridicule but cis is offensive. Funny it only works one way.

I'm not "getting upset". i just think it impacts reasonable debate.

Flolawri · 11/07/2022 18:58

Hobbitfeet32 · 11/07/2022 18:53

I’m confused as to how I would know if my gender identity is the same as my sex. What makes me a woman?
Going by @Flolawri ’s list I shouldn’t be a woman.

It wasn't a list for all women, it's what stereotypes fit ME

beautyisthefaceisee · 11/07/2022 18:57

bellinisurge · 11/07/2022 18:56

@beautyisthefaceisee I didn't compare you to a paedophile, for goodness sake. The casual use of this term is to use self justification terms that paedophiles use.

Yes you did. You implied we keep company with them. If you want to make your bold statements make them, but there is no place for them in civilised debate.

This is a women and parents site FFS.

And here we are, being rude to one another, insulting one another, over a word. A word.

Words are very important. Maybe think about some of the mere 'words' which have been used through history to describe other groups of people. Would you be telling those groups to stop making a fuss about a word? Also you are getting upset at people insulting each other? Insults are 'just words' too.

Interestingly I have heard it say they are important when it comes to misgendering, pronouns etc.
