Is CIS a legal term?

So I had a conversation with a friend the other day who is adamant Cis is an accurate descriptor of women and that it is written into law?
I asked where but she couldn't specify just stating it's a factual term (referencing women) that is legally recognized.
I've had a look and can't seem to find anything to back this up, but I know the wise women here will know if there is any truth to this.
Thanks in advance.

I object to people saying "but humans cant change sex" with wide eyes and wringing hands and pretending they are either too insensitive or too dim to understand the impact that has on people.

I'm not pretending or wide eyed. Their feelings are their own, if people want to deny reality they need to accept that other people will point out the truth, because reality doesn't respect people's individual sensibilities.

Humans cannot change sex. That is a fact.

Flolawri · 11/07/2022 19:16

@beautyisthefaceisee technically they are right, humans can't change sex. You can't change whether you have XX or XY chromosomes which are what determines the sex.

The irony is not lost on you then.

Only for one group of people. I bet you can't give me an example of any other time you behave/speak like that about people.

Flat earthers? People who think covid is a government conspiracy? People who deny climate change exists?

none of which are comparable to trans, but well done on doubling down on the offense.

"Yes, feminists, it appears!"

Lol

Its true though.

You find the word cisgender offensive and somehow we shouldnt use it but its okay to mock, degrade and belittle trans people?

All about me?

If someone is rude to me I have no reason to be nice to them
You think o am. Second class citizen whose thoughts and feelings are irrelevant?

No, i'm calling the fact you thiink other people have pronouns just to upset you wonderfully arrogant.

RoseslnTheHospital · 11/07/2022 19:07

@beautyisthefaceisee you object to accurate scientific statements being made in general? Or do you mean in reference to discussing transgender ideology? Or do you mean directly to a specific trans person?

If a transwoman asked me directly if I thought they were female, I must lie and say that they are? Even though that's not true and not what I believe?

I object to people saying "but humans cant change sex" with wide eyes and wringing hands and pretending they are either too insensitive or too dim to understand the impact that has on people.

The same people who expect me to refuse to use the word ciswoman at work because it offends them.

Feminists are the ones making all the demands while not giving 1mm to the other side.

They are doing them. You just don't like it.

the irony is, ti's the feminists who are trying to make everyone else see things their way! "humans cannot change sex" ad nauseum - why doesnt you do you apply there?

The huge effort put forth into trying to convince women they can't say no, they can't opt out of the religion.

Soz. Not doing it.

Call yourself what you like. And your power ends there.

No, just most of us have half a brain and compassion to understand that that statement is hurtful and unnecessary

It might well be "hurtful" like lots of reality is. It's very necessary though.

Only for one group of people. I bet you can't give me an example of any other time you behave/speak like that about people.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/07/2022 19:11

I suspect the problem is I am too educated. I was an early adopter, back in 2004. Saw the transwomen I knew as women, the non-binaries as non-binary and all that. "Woman" was a gender identity.

I have literally never seen any biological males as women and don't plan to start now. Woman has its original meaning, so they will need to find another word.

tobee · 11/07/2022 19:11

Pronouns as a thing seems to be another thing that people wish was a law rather just a trendy new practice.

beautyisthefaceisee · 11/07/2022 19:10

onlywhenidream · 11/07/2022 19:09

I think mocking pronouns is rather inevitable- basically by trying to get people to state pronouns you are forcing them to chose a gender , which means e have established , is really offensive

You act rude to someone it's hardly surprising they see no need to show you respect

oh yes, because its all about you.

beautyisthefaceisee · 11/07/2022 19:10

tobee · 11/07/2022 19:07

Come on ladies, we need to realise that being "hurt" and "offended" only applies to one side of the debate. Come on now be kind!

Yes, feminists, it appears!

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 11/07/2022 19:03

What was that about how "feminists" needed to understand their words had "consequences"?

When you use the word "cis", some people will see you as a like-minded individual and feel kindly towards you. Their hearts and minds will be open to you. Others will not think kindly of you. They will think of Foucault and what they know of him.

Your words have consequences on how people think of you. None of us get to decide what people think of us inside their heads. Is your problem that she has negative associations with the word "cis" or that you now know about it? If it's the first, you don't get to control people's thoughts. If it's the second, you're coming across as if it is brand new information to you that it had such negative connotations to anyone, so that's useful information to know.

Are you another one implying the link to paedophilia? I would hope not.

I don't use the word cis in conversation, cause I know it can offend.

"None of us get to decide what people think of us inside their heads" - I assume you've never used any expression on here which dismisses trans people's identity then?

My problem is neither. My problem is people who expect me to respect things that offend them but don't offer trans people the same respect.

I have to carefully monitor my speech for pronouns, engage in amateur neuro-linguistic programming, but they canot, not even for a second, refrain from telling me that I'm "cis". I remember now1

ErrolTheDragon · 11/07/2022 19:08

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/07/2022 19:04

People tend to use it as a way of saying those who aren't trans, as that is all it means

As I pointed out, that is inaccurate outside the limits of your belief system.

It's also at odds with the PPs other description of 'Ciswoman' as relating to her own adherence to feminine stereotypes.

bellinisurge · 11/07/2022 19:08

If reality is offensive to someone , they can't dictate to me that I must lie about it.

HipTightOnions · 11/07/2022 19:08

It's very necessary though.

Yes. It wasn't for millennia and it shouldn't be now, but it really is.

Flolawri · 11/07/2022 19:07

FrippEnos · 11/07/2022 19:05

@Flolawri and @beautyisthefaceisee

In order to be 'cis' I have to accept and adhere to 'societal norms' and 'stereotypes' I do not do this so I cannot be 'cis'. Your definitions do not define me.

It also does not help your cause that you cannot define your definitions beyond stereotypes.

I am however the sex that I was born as. So 'cis' is once again mis-gendering me, which in the same way that I mis-gendered someone else is offensive.

I'm not saying those definitions have to define you. I'm just stating the definitions of the words. Whether you want to use them to describe yourself or not is up to you.
