Is CIS a legal term?

So I had a conversation with a friend the other day who is adamant Cis is an accurate descriptor of women and that it is written into law?
I asked where but she couldn't specify just stating it's a factual term (referencing women) that is legally recognized.
I've had a look and can't seem to find anything to back this up, but I know the wise women here will know if there is any truth to this.
Thanks in advance.

Not only is it not an official or legal term but it is offensive to many of us.

If your friend genuinely means to be kind perhaps not using offensive terminology would be a good start.

I said this to her, that women and TW are adequate descriptors, she didn't really have much to say to that and just shrugged.

I don't think it's a topic she has much knowledge on, initially it was be kind, then when I spoke about prisons, changing rooms, schools etc... she was very much, don't be silly of course that's not ok, then it was but the numbers are so low.... now I think she's heard/read this term and is using it without realizing how offensive it is.

No, it's a term established by a paedophile

It’s a strange term, I was interested , so I discovered that the first time it was used in the current context was in the late 1940’s , in Germany. The context was ‘aberrant sexual behaviour and pathology’.

I think it derives from Roman provincial government! Northern Italy was a government area known as Gallia Cisaplina, that is , the part of Gaul which is on our ( Roman) side of the Alps. As the Republic expanded , they acquired part of Southern France, which was then named Gallia Transalpina ( Gaul across the Alps). I suppose the term just attracted some adherents due to the later acquisition.

Not much to do with sex or gender, then. The Romans had many faults, but they knew what a women was.

even though she couldn't remember where it was stated in law!

She could Google it. If is law, it'll be there

Thumpsquids · 11/07/2022 12:12

TRA's will tell you that it's ordinary language, but it's not. It's the gender ideologists jumping up and down on a 'rarely used outside of a niche scientific discipline' Latin term.

No.

Sorry but she sounds unbearable. She’s absolutely sure, but has no idea. Eye roll.

purpleboy · 11/07/2022 12:08

Hmm didn't think so!
She is very much be kind, but also doesn't agree with most of the demands being made so I guess sits somewhere in the middle, I think she has probably read the term and not thought about it too much. She was really adamant though and wouldn't back down even though she couldn't remember where it was stated in law!

No it's not. Nor is "gender identity" which is what the conversion therapy consultation tried to get on the statute books

RoseslnTheHospital · 11/07/2022 12:06

Of course it isn't. And when it's used, it doesn't just refer to women, it is used by gender ideologists to refer to men and women who they think are happy to conform to the sex based stereotypes associated with their sex. So "cis men" and "cis women" are both used.

The fact your friend couldn't back it up with anything at all is key here.

However much a few people would like it to be the case … it carries zero meaning for most of the English speaking population.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/07/2022 12:04

Not in the Equality Act. I imagine not in any other other law but I can't say for sure (the new MP maternity one?)

NiqueNique · 11/07/2022 12:02

Of course it’s bloody not!!

Takingthepmaybe · 11/07/2022 12:01

No! Of course it’s not!
