Is CIS a legal term?

purpleboy · 11/07/2022 12:01

So I had a conversation with a friend the other day who is adamant Cis is an accurate descriptor of women and that it is written into law?
I asked where but she couldn't specify just stating it's a factual term (referencing women) that is legally recognized.
I've had a look and can't seem to find anything to back this up, but I know the wise women here will know if there is any truth to this.
Thanks in advance.

There's a lot of trantumming going on here

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 11/07/2022 18:22

I suspect the problem is I am too educated. I was an early adopter, back in 2004. Saw the transwomen I knew as women, the non-binaries as non-binary and all that. "Woman" was a gender identity.

But female and male weren't. And they aren't going to be.

beautyisthefaceisee · 11/07/2022 18:22

@Flolawri is't the only one being 'arrogant'. Seems its okay if youre on the right side of the debate.

Just get a bit pissed off when people aren't accepting, that's all. To be honest, they are being ignorant as they're not wanting to be educated on the topic.

I know. I take it back, after the latest posts!

HipTightOnions · 11/07/2022 18:21

I'm cisgender as I was born female, and my gender identity is female. Does this make sense?

Not to me. You are using "female" to mean two different things, and I don't know what your second meaning is.

"Stomp about" "utter bollocks" "obtuse".

I don't think I'm the one being rude, beauty.

Whatever. Please leave me alone.

anyone on here claiming they would tell the headtescher they're not using the word and stomp about is talking utter bollocks and you know it.

Are you sure you're a teacher? I would expect to have a grown-up conversation (I don't "stomp about").

It seems you are accepting the standards don't say what you thought they said, anyway.

No, I made it up so I could look dead cool on MN.

You dont apepear to do grown up conversations. Youve been patronising and dismissive and I'm no longer interested in engaging with you.

Okay, you're right. You're so right. Well done you. Happy? Brilliant. Please get off my back.

and no, i'm not accepting that at all. I'm just fed up of your rudeness.

What?? There's no assigning of sex done by egg and sperm. One random sperm is first to break through the egg and fertilise it. If it is carrying an X chromosome the resulting embryo will be female. If it is carrying a Y chromosome then it is male. No assigning happens.

The random sperm determines the sex of the embryo. 'Assign' has a connotation of a deliberate choice. It's simply the wrong word.

tobee · 11/07/2022 18:19

"How dare you not accept what I tell you! I'm educating you here! Obviously, the same doesn't apply to me. Don't be so pernickety and expect me to show you where it says so in the law."

Hang on flolawri 4 minutes ago you said female was a gender identity now you say female is your "assigned sex"

Which is it? It can't be both a sex and a gender identity as these are different things - they have to be in order for transness to exist

For example, a trans person could be born male, but their gender identity is female. They'd be a transwoman.

I'm cisgender as I was born female, and my gender identity is female.

Does this make sense? My gender identity matches my sex.

beautyisthefaceisee · 11/07/2022 18:14

@Flolawri , argh, come on.

There's not many of us on the "other side" of the debate and we need to hang on to the little bit of credibility we have - don't be rude to people!

Google the gtcs standards in Scotland .I'm not allowed to say I'm an atheist or that I vote for Nicola Sturgeon. We have had professional standards for years, you can't change that just because you don't like peoles' opinions.

Ok, I did.

They don't mention "cis" (or "trans", for that matter).

As for "I'm not allowed to say I'm an atheist or that I vote for Nicola Sturgeon" there is nothing obvious in the standards but I assume that as in England you are not allowed to share your political views WITH THE CHILDREN. (Did you miss that detail?)

Oh, and the standards also require:

  • critically examining professional beliefs, values and attitudes of self and others
  • challenging assumptions, biases and professional practice.
That is, you are expressly required NOT to blindly accept whatever you are told.

You're being really rude, btw.

But the sperm & egg dont assign anything either.

That's exactly what they do.

You're being obtuse here.

What we say behind closed doors is one thing (although I support trans and the words so it doesnt wffect me) but anyone on here claiming they would tell the headtescher they're not using the word and stomp about is talking utter bollocks and you know it.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 11/07/2022 18:07

Flolawri · 11/07/2022 17:38

But I am female... I was born female so I have it?

And yes, female is a gender identity. There wouldn't be transwomen if they didn't identify as female?

What do you put when sites ask what gender you are? Female? Thought so.

that is a hang over from paper forms, when tedious individuals would put in "yes please" if it asked for sex.

Sex is male or female.

RoseslnTheHospital · 11/07/2022 18:02

@Flolawri how rude to call people disagreeing with you and explaining why, ignorant. It makes you seem very intolerant of differing opinions and also incapable of explaining or defending your own position.

Yes, yes I believe google is used when questions of law are made and enacted.

Using google, the page I think you're quoting?

It has this at the top.

It's not exactly defined in statute, is it?
