Penny Mordant's bid for leadership is surely over

Her obfuscation over her views on the trans issue in a long and rather disingenuous twitter thread earlier has brought a "senior Whitehall official," incensed by the perceived duplicity, out to say this:

"A senior Whitehall official gets in touch about Mordaunt and the maternity bill. “She fought AGAINST the change to ‘women’. The way she’s trying to rewrite history to suit her is despicable. While she’s supposedly campaigning on character and values. can’t believe the hypocrisy”

We all could see when it was happening it was only the steadfastness of the Lords that got the words woman and mother back in to the legislation.

On top of the that she used footage of the late Jo Cox rather cynically earlier too in a bout of self-promotion.

She has no judgement at all and her relationship with the truth seems rather strained. As the first comment in the thread says this is surely her Andrea Leadsom moment.

Penny Mordaunt should step-down before she does any more damage.

Indeed, @bellinisurge. The blatant lying was on another scale. She was supposed to plough a different path from Johnson, not emulate him.

Cant stand Truss and Sunak either.

nauticant · 20/07/2022 16:12

I have mixed feelings over Truss going forward and by current estimations, likely to win against Sunak. I just shake my head at the thought of Truss as PM.

But I would have been more unnerved by Mordaunt being in Truss's place. The government's position on trans issues would then have turned into whatever would get Mourdant a short-term advantage, and I dread to think which lobbying she'd have paid most attention to.

MarshaBradyo · 20/07/2022 16:11

Great news

Well done to anyone who didn’t want TWAW views in leadership

Apollo442 · 20/07/2022 16:08

Good riddance. I hope we helped sway it and no one sprouting such shite as 'transwomen are women' is ever elected as Prime Minister

SameSkyDifferentPlanet · 20/07/2022 16:06

We think it’s all over! It is now! Apologies to football fans everywhere….

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 16:05

Thank Fuck.
I don't like Truss or Sunak (not a Tory) but I hate that fucking liar

MenopausalMe · 20/07/2022 16:05

Whilst I’m none too keen on the other two candidates it’s a relief Mordaunt is out

Signalbox · 20/07/2022 16:03

Mordaunt is out.

JustWaking · 20/07/2022 16:01

Oops, sorry - posted by mistake half way through a link!

Prisoner's Dilemma

It's a nom-zero-sum game. A player is always better off cheating/telling in a single game. But overall outcomes are better for everyone if they cooperate.

Likewise, cheating and lying does work short term. But our whole society is better off if people play fairly by the rules.

Hoardasurass · 20/07/2022 16:01

Well the results are in and they are:-
Truss 113
Mordant 105
Sunak 137

JustWaking · 20/07/2022 15:57

It does saddens me, this post-truth, rip-up-the-rules-when-you-lose world.

It makes me think of [[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner%27s_dilemma

Mordaunt’s campaign briefing that ‘personal attacks have cut through’. Informing the public that a candidate has supported a specific position, now says they don’t, and says they never did, isn’t a personal attack. It’s transparency.

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 13:53

Mordaunt is a liar on trans issues . This should be an open goal for Labour if she wins. If they don't take it, it's because they are afraid. More sunlight.

achillestoes · 20/07/2022 13:37

Ellwood has been given back the whip in time to vote.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 20/07/2022 13:27

Fingers crossed it's Sunak & Truss on the final ballot.

achillestoes · 20/07/2022 13:12

Moment of truth this afternoon. Rumour has it it’s very close with Truss.

But it’s all a bit Trump, isn’t it? Mordaunt has her chance to convince the parliamentary party. If she can’t, she can’t govern. The members get the final say between two but they don’t get to choose their favourite off the list.

Very much Trump/Johnson although more slick which is even worse. There's some senior RN personnel who have also questioned her admiral or captain uniform photos. The twitter comments referring to cosplay are quite funny.

@mrshoho

I reckon it’s because she’s so socially left-wing.

mrshoho · 20/07/2022 07:08

achillestoes · 19/07/2022 22:10

There’s a last ditch effort to get Mordaunt added to the ballot of members even if Truss beats her (trending this evening), so they must know she’s going out. Why so desperate to bend the rules, though? Tory MPs have always elected their leaders (and because they’re elected, their leader, if the Tories are the biggest party, is Prime Minister). It’s not new. Sore losers.

Why are they so keen to have her? It would be a travesty if she was to be added.

achillestoes · 20/07/2022 07:03

@TooBigForMyBoots

Tough. It’s how it works.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/07/2022 23:47

I'm not sure Conservative Party members will appreciate being offered a choice of 2 Boris acolytes.

achillestoes · 19/07/2022 22:15

They can’t. But it will be pushed by her supporters and some on the left because she’s ‘progressive’.

ScribblingPixie · 19/07/2022 22:14

And partly because it's such an easy issue to fix. You can just say no. Take it out of schools, rule re treatment for children and say no thank you.

I hope Liz Truss would go this way - I think she would.

JustWaking · 19/07/2022 22:13

How on earth can they justify that?!?
