Unbelievable: the LGBAlliance tweet that they're going to be at all the party conferences "we’ll be running a stand and a fringe event at the Lib Dems' annual bash in Brighton in September" and whoops the LibDems CEO tweets there has been an administrative error and there is no stand after all for the LGBA, "This is not correct. To confirm: you do not have a stand or a fringe at Lib Dem Conference. I have checked with the team and there has been an administrative error. Sorry for any confusion or inconvenience." A very half-heart apology there.

The LibDems have obviously been fielding complaints from teenagers again.

Why would anyone who is gay, or any woman, attend the LibDem conference with the intolerant attitudes they have?

I was not unaware. But you seemed to be.

As LGB Alliance was tweeting specifically about ‘marriage’ and you are keen to label them as hateful for it.

Yes. You are entitled to your opinion.

Other people are entitled to point out how that opinion is not supported by evidence and how you have continued to demonise a group for your own political agenda.

And now you are attempting to gatekeep discussion around LGB Alliance on a feminist board making claims that seem poorly supported and that lack broader thought.

If you were aware that civil partnerships existed then why would anyone in Britain oppose gay marriage on the grounds that "Many people would have liked the choice of legal protection under another name than ‘marriage’."

We already had that, we were asking for something else because we wanted people to have the choice.

theclangersarecoming · 09/07/2022 20:31

It is a bit like how in the early 20th century many woman campaigned against giving women the vote. Nowadays women are nearly unanimous that it is sexist to oppose giving women the right to vote.

It really isn’t; and @Hearach15 I recall other previous threads, on which you have had the history of opinion about marriage in the gay community explained to you in great detail; as well as threads in which posters have corrected your misinformation on the LGB Alliance in detail. So I’m assuming that you are not engaging in this thread in good faith.

Well, were you unaware that gay couples had legal protection in the form of civil partnerships prior to marriage equality?

Are Labour and Libdems receiving massive donations from the pharmaceutical industry or something? Or is it pressure from TRAs which is driving all this? I can't quite grasp the amount of power this, most marginalised, group hold.

Follow the money.

this is from a GC blog, but has a link to Electoral Commission - quite an eye opener in my opinion.

Yes, we had exactly that prior to marriage equality, they were called civil partnerships. Again, you're just showing how little you know about the LGBT community.

Yeah, that is me told good and proper.

You have previously not be able to substantiate many, if any, of your claims about LGB Alliance and I am keen to see what you link up. Because your own agenda seems very clear on this feminist board to many people reading your posts.

I am sure others also want to see your evidence.

And are you on a feminist board posting and now trying to gatekeep other’s interactions about the LGB community if they are not LGB? And you cannot recognise the deep hypocrisy in your doing so?

People are perfectly entitled to be a part of the LGBA, I am equally entitled to say its agenda is actually harmful to the LGBT community.

You really don’t see how narrow your interpretation is here, do you?

You are doubling down on a bad take.

They explained their initial tweet. Do you understand that there are many people in the world, same sex attracted or not, who also believe this. Many people would have liked the choice of legal protection under another name than ‘marriage’.

It makes them ‘anti-marriage’ not any other type of ‘phobic’. Legal protection for the relationship was the key here, not ‘marriage’.

Not acknowledging that, means some people can continue to post how ‘phobic’ others are for not wanting new legislation passed recognising their relationships with wording that replicates an arrangement based heavily in religion though. So there is that.

Many of us lesbians are pleased when women speak up in support, especially when they're challenging random posters who display a tedious obsession with the LGB Alliance and other women who dare to think and organise about safeguarding children and protecting women's rights without their permission.

Hearach15 · 09/07/2022 19:47

Yes, they u-turned publicly because it was such a stupid thing to say (but the first tweet was clearly illustrative of their true feelings.)

The LGBA are entitled to not care about marriage equality, I am equally entitled to the opinion that they are bigots.

You know, the LGB Alliance isn't campaigning to remove marriage rights for same sex couples. Nor do they support that. Even in that hatchet job of a Pr*ck News article they had the quoted response from LGB A that made it clear it was a badly worded tweet. They gave a fuller explanation of their (completely reasonable) thoughts which made it very clear they aren't against gay marriage.

Your desperation to paint them as a homophobic hate group is laughable.

Indeed they are not campaigning to remove gay marriage but as the tweet revealed they are clearly chill about people who are

Hearach15 · 09/07/2022 19:49

Helleofabore · 09/07/2022 19:43

There was indeed a small minority 10-15 years ago but in 2022 the LGBT community is nearly unanimous that gay marriage is a fundamental right and only homophobes would want to take it away from us.

Please link the evidence to that claim.

And whether it is about ‘marriage’ or about the legal recognition of a relationship? And how that data collection clarified it.

And I hope there is also a comparison then to heterosexual people’s views. That would be interesting.

I thank the lord that we aren't all ruled by dogmatic sloganeering and publicly shamed for stepping outside the bounds of what our overlords have decided is correct think

The simplistic thinking that has led to this particular polarisation is quite eye opening when you see it posted time and time again.

Helleofabore · 09/07/2022 19:37

The tweet that was problematic from the article posted above about same sex marriage.

“To those people saying it is ‘homophobic’ not to be in favour of gay marriage have a look at the statistics. It seems it’s rather a small minority who have made their wedding vows.”

Which LGB Alliance reportedly then followed up with:

The introduction of same-sex marriage was a great breakthrough for gay people. But support for it wasn’t universal among LGB activists: many saw it as a sellout – joining the establishment. A minority still view it that way.”

Basically stating that the term ‘marriage’ is the issue with all its connections to religion and any other administrative authority. Many people in the wider population would share that view. Even some married people. It is not a unique ‘LGB’ perspective.

What is contentious about that?

The person who posted the first tweet was talking specifically about ‘marriage’ not recognised arrangements providing legal protections for people.

What claims are you going to lay on those who campaigned for the legal recognition of those civil partnerships that are not called ‘marriage’? What ‘anti- ‘ are they?

All you continue to do is show that you consider any person who doesn’t fit your narrow belief set not worthy of respect . That is all you achieve with posting that article.

Again not the gotcha you think it is.

Yes, they u-turned publicly because it was such a stupid thing to say (but the first tweet was clearly illustrative of their true feelings.)

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 09/07/2022 19:39

It wasn't a small minority. Stonewall's position for years was AGAINST same sex marriage because they rejected the patriarchal and religious notion of marriage altogether.

Given that many of the original founders have left Stonewall and are now involved in LGBA it's hardly surprising that there is a plurality of opinion on the matter. Which in a functioning democracy is exactly as it should be.

I thank the lord that we aren't all ruled by dogmatic sloganeering and publicly shamed for stepping outside the bounds of what our overlords have decided is correct think.

Famously the LGB Alliance said it wasn't homophobic to oppose gay marriage....

"Stonewall, which has 20,000 supporters and has been at the forefront of Britain's gay-rights movement for more than 20 years, has publicly stated it has no formal position on gay-marriage equality because it is consulting lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) people on how to approach the issue."

"The charity will finish its consultation exercise later this month. He said: "There is a range of views on this subject, from those who very much want gay marriages and for them to be mandatory in churches, to those who reject civil partnerships as 'hetero-normative'."
