Julie Bindel

You may hate me for this (well, some of you at least, but I cannot BELIEVE that many of you on here are deciding who is good or bad for PM because of the trans issue ALONE. I mean, I KNOW it is an urgent issue, but so are a million other things right now!!

Sharron Davies

I agree with your too Julie. There’s a bigger picture right now with people potentially unable to feed or keep their kids warm this winter. We can keep bringing the sunlight to other issues.

That's literally a 14 second clip with no context at all. It's so out of context I have no idea what the source is
Can you share the full video? I don't trust clips like that, the full video rarely says what the editor has clipped to imply

Thelnebriati · 10/07/2022 14:13

Women would love to stop having to waste resources fighting for our basic right to exist, and tackle other important issues.

No one else is in our corner but they all demand our time and energy when it suits them.

JustSpeculation · 10/07/2022 14:09

"Nonethless I consider giving credence to the views of Peter Sweden to be an extremely serious matter- especially endorsing his opinion about the media and asking what we are going to do about "a media that only shows the news the[y] want to show"

So it's not holocaust denial, but his views on the media you have issues with in this case? If you think his views on the media are wrong, then counter them. Why are they wrong? If you think Davies is wrong about the way farming issues are covered in the media, tell us why. Or, rather, go on Twitter and tell SD why. I don't think farming issues are a main focus of this board.

But you are using the Peter Sweden issue to clobber Davies' views on women's rights without directly addressing those views themselves. You are manufacturing a connection where there isn't one. That's the problem.

The energy crisis has been known about since I was a child.

Your other points in the post were fair, but the energy prices are out of control.

Sorry, ‘not just to ‘.

@JustSpeculation
I'd be amazed if Sharron Davies sees herself either as a leading figure in the "GC movement", or as amplifying far right views.

May I link to something Orwell said once in his Tribune column? The first bit:

www.telelib.com/authors/O/OrwellGeorge/essay/tribune/AsIPlease19441208.html

Thank you very much for the link to George Orwell’s essay. What he writes there could not be more pertinent not to Sharron Davies in this particular argument about her retweet, but to anyone disagreeing with another point of view in a discussion.

And the dire state of the gender critical movement can be seen by the enthusiasm with which many people here are deciding which candidate for the next Conservative Prime Minister to support based on who can be most extreme about trans people - (based as far as I can understand it on fears that transpeople will enable more men to dress as women to frequent women's lavatories )

Is this issue really more important to you than the housing crisis, the fact that wages haven't risen for 14 years ,rampant inflation, an energy crisis, millions being in dire poverty. raw sewage floating down rivers and the return of polio, the decline of the NHS, exorbitant cost of education, attacks on civil rights, iv or the inabiliity to solve brexit?

Sigh, here we explain yet again that we care about women.
Most of us are not a part of the Tory party so have no input as to who the next prime minister is.
Yes this is my hill to die on. I am well past the time that "after the revolution sister" is good enough. I now require much more from politicians than wait your turn.
FWIW
The housing crisis has been rumbling on since 2000 ish not really a crisis is it, more of an ongoing issue.
I dunno where you work but I've had wage rises in the last 14 years. Maybe you should change employers?

I remember previous terms of high inflation, it's a cycle and will happen again.
The energy crisis has been known about since I was a child. So for the last 50 years its been a crisis. Same as housing, it's an issue.

Millions were in poverty under labour, I know I was a single parent then.
No clue about polio returning, not heard about it, cannot comment.
The NHS has been in decline and near collapse every single winter. Money however wont help the NHS, we need something like the Canadian system.

I'm proper bored now and will return to the other alleged issues later.

No. You have not understood very much if this is all you have been able to make out from people’s discussions on this thread, and others.

ScrollingLeaves · 10/07/2022 13:49

@antifascist
Get over yourself
Do you not see any irony?
Most people would be better off not saying this to anyone else. It is rude, and to say it risks being the very thing you are accusing someone else of being.

Maybe because it's utterly trivial? Maybe she's more focused on the point she's making? Maybe she doesn't see it as a mistake? Dunno. Don't care. You seem to see it as being one, and that interests me.

I didn't mean to imply that Davies had made a mistake. Merely to emphasise the way I see your reaction as introducing a moral dimension where there doesn't need to be one. Where I think there isn't one.

But I want to apologise for the "habituate" comment. That was snarky and unnecessary. I knew what you meant.

That's gracious of you re "habituate" - and I appreciate it.

And it's also a trust issue. Because 99% of people are not approaching these things as experts where they can look at the data themselves, they are relying on others to do that properly.

It's already had an effect, lots of people simply don't accept that people or groups that preach gender ideology are worth listening to on any science related issue. They don't trust their judgement. And I don't blame them.

This is so true. Hannah Arendt wrote about this:

The result of a consistent and total substitution of lies for factual truth is not that the lie will now be accepted as truth and truth be defamed as a lie, but that the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world—and the category of truth versus falsehood is among the mental means to this end—is being destroyed

I don’t see any of the candidates being “extreme”. What’s extreme about suggesting single sex changing rooms and a unisex one for people who don’t want to use them?

Does the retweet make Davies somehow "objectively pro holocaust denial"? No.

Your reaction in this thread is one of horror at what you seem to see as moral betrayal of a movement. A sort of sin. I'm a liberal. I don't think it's sinful to be wrong. I don't think it's sinful to make a mistake. A mistake, being wrong, are matters of fact. Sin is an error of the soul, and I don't think the concept is relevant here. So, yes, I'm sanguine.

By the way, "habituate" doesn't mean what you think it does.

And this post is one example of all that is good about Mumsnet. Love it for the intelligence with the humour thrown in!

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 13:30

I think women who are prepared to say sex is real have been remarkably sanguine about being effectively removed from political life for the best part of a decade.

Thing is, if we can't show fidelity to reality when it comes to sex, how on earth will we convince people that climate change is a real and pressing concern? This is about manipulation of truth and language - combating that is fundamental to making progress on other issues.

And it's also a trust issue. Because 99% of people are not approaching these things as experts where they can look at the data themselves, they are relying on others to do that properly.
